ResumoAn integrated operational meteorological data system is a system for acquisition, archiving, visualization and analysis for all the data needed for the weather forecasting. The integration should allow the analysis and superposition of all the different data-sets. In the United States there is an integrated system, coordinated by the NOAA, available to universities through the UNIDATA program. Brazil did not have a similar system, so, each organization adopts his own solution in an independent way. Since 2004 several institutions in Brazil are using the integrated system formed by the LDM and GEMPAK experiencing the benefits of an integrated solution like this one. By the accumulated experience we concluded that this is a necessity for the Brazilian Meteorology, and that the benefits and possible solutions should be further discussed in a national way.

ResumoThe CPTEC is the Center for Weather Forecast and Climatic Analysis, a division of the INPE, the Brazilian National Institute for Space Research. The institution is a reference for space science, satellite imagery, and environmental studies in South America. Currently the politics of free data and software is being strengthened, as the INPExs administration has stated it as a priority for the following years. The institution is the largest distributor of satellite imagery and numerical model outputs in South America. The value of this reprocessing work on the archived conventional meteorological data is to provide a better database of observational data for distribution. Since the middle of 1995, when the data-processing system of the CPTEC started in an operational way, meteorological data from the GTS, the Global Telecommunications System sponsored by the World Meteorological Organization, began to be received and archived in tapes. These data are mainly the surface and upper-air conventional observations from all the globe, compound by synoptic stations, airports, ships, aircrafts and radiosonde data. The purpose of the operational work is to feed the numerical weather forecast models, the weather forecasters and the researchers, among other uses that had multiplied with the years. In order to be useful for the users, these data needs to be processed and decoded. The core of the data-processing system from CPTEC/INPE assembled in the first years were a set of FORTRAN programs from the ECMWF pre-processing system that have been modified for local needs. The processed data were converted to WMO's BUFR format and stored in an Oracle database. Starting at 2003 some efforts were applied to improve the data-processing system. The adopted strategy was to add a second processing suite using decoders from the UNIDATA's GEMPAK package. With this was possible to do comparisons and verifications, and this contributed for improved results. Other initiatives were on the data transmission, that was improved replacing a set of scripts by tools from the UNIDATA/UCAR and from the German Meteorological Service (DWD): The LDM, Local Data Manager; and the AFD (Automatic File Distributor). With the use of LDM the data from the UNIDATA's IDD (Internet Data Distribution) could be received to complement the data received from the Brazilian GTS's Regional Transmission Headquarters (RTH) at the National Institute for Meteorology (INMET). The reprocessing of our archived data was able to generate a increased number of observations. This is because during the operational processing always there are errors and data-loss that not always can be recovered at the time, and due to several other factors that can be better controlled during a late reprocessing than during the operational daily routine. However, the main reasons for the improvement of the results that we met should be credited to the availability of better decoders and more complete and accurate station tables. With better decoders and station tables, still was lacking one piece to do the reprocessing work in a more effectively way: a database for the raw GTS data. This issue was addressed in the last two years, when our data-processing system was improved again with the installation of new machines and the addition of a locally-developed database that was designed for the archiving of GTS data. Although this database still be in an experimental form, it made the reprocessing work easier and more controlled. A final step was realized with another database to organize the station tables, improving and completing it. For the reprocessing work we first recovered all the archived tapes and inserted the data on the database for the raw GTS data. With this step we not only eliminated duplications and wrong bulletins, as we could also control in a very effective way the completeness of our archive identifying periods with lost data or tapes. The second step was the extraction of the data in a form ready to feed the decoders, organizing them by the observation times. These data were processed using a set of modified GEMPAK's decoders to meet local necessities, and the results were made available to the users in GEMPAK format.

ResumoIn this study is made an investigation about spatial structure of South Atlantic Convergence Zone (SACZ) on continental and oceanic sector. Intraseasonal variability of this meteorological system in three summer seasons (extended summer - October to March) is conducted between Indonesia and South America tropical sector. Thirty-one SACZ events are analyzed according to CPTEC/INPE Climanálise reports. Nine events were registered in 2005/2006 summer, ten in 2006/2007 summer and twelve in 2007/2008 summer. These events are characterized as oceanic SACZ or continental SACZ according to maximum convective activity position inferred through the more negative values of Outgoing Long Wave Radiation Anomalies (AOLR) on atmospheric top. Ocean category is associated with negative AOLR concentrated in southern Atlantic and close to southeastern Brazil coast. On the other hand, continental aspect presents intense signs of anomalous convection concentrated in part of central Brazil. Vertical structure of oceanic category shows the presence of a deep anomalous trough which presents a baroclinic dynamic behavior. In continental category that trough appears restricted to low levels. Additionally, Lanczos filter is applied to OLR, considering 02-10, 10-30 and 30-70 days temporal bands. It is verified that spatial distribution of anomalous convection observed in oceanic category, presents a phase relationship between high frequency and low frequency modes, which can not be observed in continental category. Different stages of Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO) modulate convective behavior of both SACZ categories.

ResumoThe LETKF/GCM-CPTEC assimilation system analysis have been implemented in CPTEC/INPE-Brasil to replace the PSAS/GCM-CPTEC. Several experiments have been done to validate that system before it becomes operational. In this study we compare results of an experiment with the LETKF/GCM-CPTEC assimilation system analysis when assimilation only conventional data and when it also assimilates AMSU satellite data. The results shows that including satellite data the LETKF reproduces better the signal in the short time scales and as well medium range time scales. The results indicates that the way LETKF computes the analysis innovations helps to keep the amplitude of all time scale in the analysis field. The first guess ensemble spread and the analysis innovation are compared in order to identify the regions of larger uncertainties over the South America.

ResumoHeavy rainfall predictability is studied using forecasts of Short-Range Ensemble Predictions Systems (SREPS) based on the Eta Model with 10-km horizontal resolution and 38 levels in the vertical. Different methodologies are applied to include uncertainties in the forecasts. Uncertainties in the initial conditions and in model numerical representation are considered in the SREPS. South Atlantic Convergence Zone (SACZ) and Frontal Systems (FS) cases which occurred over Serra do Mar region (Southeast of Brazil) were used for tests and evaluation. To investigate the impacts of the initial condition uncertainties initial variables were perturbed in the Ensemble Prediction System of the global model (GEPS). The Eta Model SREPS uses these GEPS forecasts as initial and lateral boundary conditions. The second ensemble runs included uncertainties from model physics. In this ensemble, 6 Eta Model integrations were carried out including modifications in two different convective parameterization schemes and one surface parameterization scheme. The third ensemble runs is a combination of initial condition and model uncertainties experiments. A SREPS with 11 members was constructed (4 members from initial condition experiment, 6 members from model physics experiment and 1 control unperturbed member). Statistical evaluation indicates better performance for ensemble including model physics than ensemble of initial conditions mainly in ZCAS cases. The 24-hr accumulated precipitation forecasts exhibit a flat Talagrand diagram in the 11-member ensemble. The increase in the ensemble size leads to more improved probabilistic forecasts.

ResumoWe describe preliminary results of the role of vertical transport of CO2 by convective systems by using the newest version of a regional atmospheric model fully coupled with a state-of-the-science land surface model. The new modeling system was developed by integrating JULES (Joint UK Land Environment Simulator) land surface model within the CCATT-BRAMS (Coupled Chemistry, Aerosol and Tracer Transport model to the Brazilian developments on the Regional Atmospheric Modeling System) to allows numerical simulations of CO2 atmospheric concentration including interactive, on-line biogenic surface fluxes, in addition to the anthropogenic fluxes (biomass burning, urban-industrial-transportation and charcoal production). Model simulations with horizontal grid spacing of 15 kilometers over the Amazon basin using the new model, which have a tracer convective transport module coupled with the cumulus parameterization, were performed. The role of shallow-non precipitating and deep convection on transporting CO2 from the planetary boundary layer (PBL) to the free troposphere (FT) is presented. In particular, we focus on the discussion of the rectifier effect through simulation of the transport to the FT of PBL air masses with low CO2 concentrations due to assimilation by vegetation during the afternoon, when both CO2 fixation and convection are at their maximum activity. The importance of a correct numerical representation of the diurnal cycle of convection over the land is then reinforced.

ResumoThe rainfall regime over the Plata Basin is strongly influenced by Mesoscale Convective Systems (MCSs) that develop during night time associated with the Low Level Jet (LLJ) to the east of Andes. As they are mesoscale systems, their predictability depends on the model resolution and ability in representing the main features associated with their development. Due to the lack of observed data on these regions, the studies have focused on the synoptic scale phenomena. However the influences of local scales, such as heating, mountain-valley circulation and secondary circulations, also play an important role in the genesis of MCSs. The objective of this study is to investigate the role of local and secondary circulations on the development of MCSs that occur to the east of the Andes Cordillera. In this study, 8 cases of MCSs were simulated with the Eta model high-resolution using a non-hydrostatic mode and Kain Fritsch (KF). convection scheme. The results showed that the Eta model was able to simulate, 72 hours in advance, the precipitation and the associated mechanisms of MCSs occurrence. The diurnal cycle and local circulation were also well represented by the model. The mountain-vale circulation to the east of Andes due to the differential heating and the inertial oscillation due to the Coriolis force which strengthened the LLJ, contributed to the development of convection associated with the MCSs.

ResumoAn unsolved problem in meteorology is to represent clouds and their collective effects in regional or large scale atmospheric numerical models, since the physical processes of the clouds and their interaction with the environment are not well understood yet. In the atmospheric models with grid spacing around 10 Km or greater the effects of clouds on the atmosphere are represented by convective parameterizations. The inverse problem methodology for parameter estimation is applied to a challenging meteorological phenomenon that causes intense rainfall over South America. The inverse problem is formulated as an optimization problem, where the goal is to apply and to evaluate the Firefly method (FA) as an optimizer for retrieving the weights of the ensemble of convective parameterizations of Grell and Dévényi. The forward problem is addressed by the Coupled Chemistry-Aerosol-Tracer Transport-Brazilian developments on the Regional Atmospheric Modeling System (CCATT-BRAMS), and the ensemble of convective parameterizations is expressed by several methodologies used to parameterize convection. The simulation of convective precipitation associated with South Atlantic Convergence Zone (SACZ) occurred on 21 February 2004 with each parameterization is simulated. A synthetic noiseless field of convective precipitation is computed as a weighted sum of the simulated precipitation fields. The FA method has two important issues: the definition of the variation of light intensity viewed by the fireflies, and the formulation of the attractiveness of the fireflies, determined by its brightness witch it characterizes the evaluation of the objective function. Each firefly represents a five dimension candidate solution and the brightest firefly represents the best set of weights of the convective parameterizations. The algorithm was applied with 20 fireflies and 1000 iterations. The results showed a very good inverse solution, and the retrieved field was in agreement with the synthetic precipitation field.

ResumoThe South, Southeast and Center-West regions of Brazil are often reached by Mesoscale Convective Systems (MCS). These systems play an important role in the accumulated rainfall in these regions, as well as others globe's regions. The objective of this work is to find flow patterns at low and high levels of the troposphere for two cases of MCSs that occurred on October 05, 2009 and February 19, 2010 over the Southeast of South America. These systems were identified analyzing satellite images of the GOES-10 and GOES-12, respectively, and their impacted on the raingauges measures with large amount of precipitation. To analyze the life cycle of these MCSs were used meteorological fields (wind, temperature, pressure, humidity, etc) from the reanalysis data of the National Centers for Environmental Prediction/ National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCEP/NCAR). Some remarkable features of MCSs were identified in the systems selected for this analysis. The data analysis looked for identifying the atmospheric conditions that gives heat and moisture supplies to the development of these systems. This work is part of a larger study, where more cases of MCS will be examined with the intention of better understanding the behavior of this system in its life cycle.

ResumoAn intense Mesoscale Convective System (MCS) that occurred in Southern South America between 29 and 30 November 2009 was analyzed in this study. The choice of this system was because severe weather conditions related to its occurred. In some areas of state of Rio Grande do Sul-Brazil, winds of the order of 100 km/h and precipitation higher than 50 mm in 24 hours was observed, causing serious damages in several cities. The dataset from the ERA-Interim reanalysis, with spatial resolution of 1.5 ° x1, 5 ° lat/lon, was used to generate meteorological fields in order to analyze the synoptic situation associated with the formation of the MCS. The MCS was simulated using the Coupled Aerosol and Tracer Transport model to the Brazilian Developments on the Regional Atmospheric Modeling System (CCATT-BRAMS) with 15 km spatial resolution and 38 vertical levels, and outputs each 1h. To analyze the simulated precipitation fields, we used a precipitation field generated with observational data of raingauge network from several Brazilian institutions (http://clima1.cptec.inpe.br). According to data from the reanalysis and satellite pictures, the MCS was associated with a cold front. We observed the presence of a low pressure center in northwest Argentina positioned at west of the MCS. Moreover, it was found that the system formed downstream of a Low Level Jet (LLJ) at east of the Andes. Strong warm and moist advection in the layer between the surface and 850 hPa, associated with the dowstream JBN, toward the western region of Rio Grande do Sul were found, where we observed the occurrence of maximum precipitation. In upper levels, the presence of the jet stream contributed to the formation/intensification of MSC, since this system was observed at the entrance of the equatorial jet stream at high levels. The CCATT-BRAMS simulated the major features observed in synoptic fields generated with the reanalysis. However, it was found that the axis of LLJ was shifted to the northwest, over the eastern region of Paraguay. Thus, the downstream LLJ was verified over state of Parana. When we compared the simulation of accumulated precipitation and observed precipitation, it was found that the model shifted the maximum rainfall occurred west of Rio Grande do Sul to Paraguay, possibly due to the displacement of the LLJ for this region.
