ResumoThis paper gives an overview of SAEMC (South American Emissions, Megacities and Climate) project cyberinfrastructure. This cyberinfrastructure consists of a set of High Performance Computing (HPC) clusters, situated in Chile and Brazil and interconnected by Grid Technology (gLite). As obtaining computing resource allocation, connecting from the command line of each computational or storage resource, setting up individual codes and environments, bringing together the tools and finding the best resources to accomplish their research goals are not easy tasks. An important feature to broadening the participation in grid computing is providing easy access mechanisms and user interfaces, to allow a wide range of users with different computer skills to access the computational and data resources. So, the most important feature is the GUI (Graphical User Interface) to SAEMC team. It connects users to chemical and weather numerical model (CATT-BRAMS - Coupled Aerosol and Tracers Transport model to the Brazilian developments on the Regional Atmospheric Modeling System) that runs on clusters. This GUI uses the latest JAVA technologies, offering facilities to users to interact with interfaces for job submission, management and data presentation. It is expect scientific advances of the SAEMC project researchers by linking them under a common computational framework.

ResumoMany components of the South American Monsoon, as the Inter-Tropical Convergence Zone, the Bolivian High, the South Atlantic Convergence Zone and the Low Level Jet, among others, are very well known and documented in literature. However, there is another component that is much less known and understood: the Chaco Low. This low pressure center appears in climatological maps during the summer season as an elongated baric depression placed over the South American plains extending east of the Andes, from the Amazonian basin to northwestern Argentina. Many features related to the Chaco Low remain unexplored, although some idealized numerical experiments pointed that this depression would be the indirect response to tropical convection. The objective of this work is to analyze the physical mechanisms responsible for the presence of the Chaco Low during the austral summer. To this purpose, numerical simulations using the regional Eta/CPTEC model have been performed for a particular case, occurred from February 1st to 6th, 2007. The high correspondence between pressure and temperature (or atmospheric thickness) fields confirms the thermal nature of the system. Using this fact, each term of the thermodynamic equation has been evaluated in order to determine the physical mechanisms responsible for the Chaco Low development. Temperature tendencies derived from each term of the equation have been computed directly from the model code to avoid numerical residuals. Those terms have been vertically integrated in the 700/1000 hPa layer, which is the tropospheric layer most correlated with sea surface level pressure variations. The analysis of this particular case revealed that there are two main physical mechanisms that explain the existence of the Chaco Low: surface heat balance and latent heat released by convection. Surface heat fluxes are partly compensated by radiative atmospheric cooling at the 700/1000 hPa layer and are also responsible for the diurnal cycle of this system. Latent heat release by convection is the most important factor in terms of temperature tendencies, confirming previous theoretical results. This process is partly compensated by adiabatic cooling related to upward motion, but this cooling is around 50% of the warming produced by humid convection. Other terms as large scale condensation/evaporation or horizontal thermal advection have a minor and negative contribution. A number of sensitivity experiments have been also carried out to evaluate the impact of surface heat fluxes, latent heat release and convection on the Chaco Low behavior. In general, all the experiments show a reduction of the Chaco Low intensity, showing that all processes under consideration individually contribute to its development. In particular, the exclusion of surface heat fluxes cause a gentle sea surface pressure increase, but this feature affects systematically a broad portion of the South American continent and the Atlantic Ocean. The suppression of convection and latent heat release produces a lighter impact on pressure increase, but induces a clearer reduction on the Chaco Low intensity.
