ResumoContinuous Geostationary Lightning Mapper (GLM) observations are used to document total lightning activity over the life cycle of a long-lived Mesoscale Convective System (MCS). MCSs may be few in number, but they are important for the Global Electric Circuit (GEC) because they sustain high lightning flash rates and quasi steady state conduction currents (Wilson currents) over longer time periods than ordinary isolated convection. The optical characteristics of the flashes produced by MCSs change over time, providing additional insights into the precipitation structure, convective mode, and evolution of the storm system. These insights are particularly useful in areas void of radar observations. Intercalibrated passive microwave radiometer data from the Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) constellation also are used to estimate changes in Wilson current generation as the system evolves. These results highlight the role of MCSs in the GEC, and showcase how optical flash descriptors relate to thunderstorm organization, maturity, and structure.

ResumoWe present multi-point observations of dayside transient events and their impact on the Earths magnetosphere. The Magnetospheric Multiscale (MMS) spacecraft observed a series of pulsed density enhancements and a rapid transition from the magnetosphere to the region upstream from the bow shock within just 2 min on 10 December 2016. Strong antisunward, and sometimes sunward, flows are observed in conjunction with the pulses, which are bathed in energetic particles that appear to have escaped from the outer magnetosphere rather than energization of solar wind particles within the foreshock. The selectively escaping ion species provide information concerning distance from the magnetopause to the bow shock. The transient magnetosheath density and (corresponding dynamic pressure) enhancements may result from solar wind discontinuities interacting with the bow shock and/or ripples generated on the bow shock surface. Observed magnetospheric responses to these transient phenomena include patchy, sporadic magnetopause reconnection, magnetopause surface waves, transient magnetic field variations in ground magnetograms and ionospheric flow enhancements. We inspect the strikingly different observations seen by multipoint solar wind monitors at different locations and the transient response seen by high-latitude ground magnetometers and radars.

ResumoOptical emissions from natural cloud-to-ground (CG) lightning flashes in the Washington, DC metropolitan area are measured using two Phantom high-speed camera systems and the GLM sensor on the GOES-16 satellite during summer 2017. Important insights are gained by observing CG flashes from the side using the Phantom cameras simultaneously with the top-down view provided by GLM. The GLM response to visible processes of the CG flashes that are evident to the phantom cameras at 2500 frames per second are assessed. These features include individual return strokes, interstroke intervals, and continuing currents. The optical measurements from GLM and the Phantom cameras are compared with observations from the National Lighting Detection Network (NLDN) and the Washington D.C. Lightning Mapping Array (DCLMA) to gain additional perspective. Several cases of interest are shown to illustrate the value of these types of coincident observations.

ResumoThe solar wind constitutes a nonlinear dynamical system, presenting intermittent turbulence, multifractality and chaotic dynamics. One characteristic shared by many such complex systems is the presence of extreme events, that play an important role in several Geophysical phenomena and their statistical characterization is a problem of great practical relevance. This work investigates the presence of extreme events in time series of the modulus of the interplanetary magnetic field measured by Cluster spacecraft on February 2, 2002. One of the main results is that the solar wind near the Earth's bow shock can be modeled by the Generalized Pareto (GP) and Generalized Extreme Values (GEV) distributions. Both models present a statistically significant positive shape parameter which implyies a heavy tail in the probability distribution functions and an unbounded growth in return values as return periods become too long. There is evidence that current sheets are the main responsible for positive values of the shape parameter. It is also shown that magnetic reconnection at the interface between two interplanetary magnetic flux ropes in the solar wind can be considered as Dragon Kings (DK), a class of extreme events whose formation mechanisms are fundamentally different from others. As long as magnetic reconnection can be classified as a Dragon King, there is the possibility of its identification and even its prediction. Dragon kings had previously been identified in time series of financial crashes, nuclear power generation accidents, stock market and so on. It is believed that they are associated with the occurrence of extreme events in dynamical systems at phase transition, bifurcation, crises or tipping points.

ResumoThe Amazon forest has been the target of several threats throughout the years. Anthropogenic disturbances in the region can significantly alter this environment, affecting directly the dynamics and structure of tropical forests. Monitoring these threats of forest degradation across the Amazon is of paramount to understand the impacts of disturbances in the tropics. With the advance of new technologies such as Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) the quantification and development of methodologies to monitor forest degradation in the Amazon is possible and may bring considerable contributions to this topic. The objective of this study was to use remote sensing data to assess and estimate the aboveground biomass (AGB) across different levels of degradation (fire and selective logging) using multi-stage approach between airborne LiDAR and orbital image. The study area is in the northern part of the state of Mato Grosso, Brazil. It is predominantly characterized by agricultural land and remnants of the Amazon Forest intact and degraded by either anthropic or natural reasons (selective logging and/or fire). More specifically, the study area corresponds to path/row 226/69 of OLI/Landsat 8 image. With a forest mask generated from the multi-resolution segmentation, agriculture and forest areas, forest biomass was calculated from LiDAR data and correlated with texture images, vegetation indices and fraction images by Linear Spectral Unmixing of OLI/Landsat 8 image and extrapolated to the entire scene 226/69 and validated with field inventories. The results showed that there is a moderate to strong correlation between forest biomass and texture data, vegetation indices and fraction images. With that, it is possible to extract biomass information and create maps using optical data, specifically by combining vegetation indices, which contain forest greening information with texture data that contains forest structure information. Then it was possible to extrapolate the biomass to the entire scene (226/69) from the optical data and to obtain an overview of the biomass distribution throughout the area.

ResumoDegradation of Amazon rainforests represents a vital threat to carbon storage, climate regulation and biodiversity; however its effect on tropical ecosystems is largely unknown. In this study we evaluate the effects of forest degradation on forest structure and functioning over the Xingu Basin in the Brazilian Amazon. The vegetation types in the area is dominated by Open Ombrophilous Forest (Asc), Semi-decidiuous Forest (Fse) and Dense Ombrophilous Forest (Dse). We used Airborne Laser Scanning (ALS) data together with time series of optical remote sensing images from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) bi-directional corrected using the Multi-Angle Implementation for Atmospheric Correction (MAIAC). We derive time-series (2008 to 2016) of the Enhanced Vegetation Index (EVI) and Green-Red Normalized Difference (GRND) to analyze the dynamics of degraded areas with related changes in canopy structure and greenness values, respectively. Airborne ALS measurements showed the largest tree heights in the Dse class with values up to 40m tall. Asc and Fse vegetation types reached up to 30m and 25m in height, respectively. Differences in canopy structure were also evident from the analysis of canopy volume models (CVMs). Asc showed higher proportion of sunlit, as expected for open forest types. Fse showed gaps predominantly in lower height levels, and a higher overall proportion of shaded crown. Full canopy closure was reached at about15 m height for both Asc and Dse, and at about 20 m height for Fse. We also used a base map of degraded areas (available from Imazon Instituto do Homen e Meio Ambiente da Amazônia) to follow these regions throughout time using EVI and GRND from MODIS. All three forest types displayed seasonal cycles. Notable differences in amplitude were detected during the periods when degradation occurred and both indexes showed a decrease in their response. However, there were marked differences in timing and amplitude depending on forest type. These responses were influenced by the spatial resolution of 1km of the MODIS images, limited the ability to observe small degraded regions. In conclusion, ASL together with optical remote sensing used in a straight multi-scale approach may contribute to understand the impacts of degradation in the structure and functioning of tropical forest.

ResumoThe changing climate leads to uncertainties concerning the sustainability of certain agricultural resources, and with the additional stresses of an increasing global population, uncertainty in food security will greatly increase. To adhere to future food demands in the face of this changing climate, perennial agriculture has been a proposed solution. However, it is equally important to assure that perennial agriculture is not negatively affecting the climate in exchange for this proposed more robust food source. We chose to examine the interactions between perennial and annual agricultural crops by focusing on the efficiency of exchanges with the atmosphere. This is done using the omega decoupling factor for 4 different sites as a way of quantifying the contributions of radiation and stomatal conductance over the resulting water and carbon cycles. This gives us an indication of how the plant canopy is interacting with, and influencing the local microclimate. Ultimately, this should give us an indication of the ability of perennial crops to aid in the climate mitigation process. We hypothesized that the perennial site chosen would have omega values more similar to the omega values of a natural grassland rather than an annual crop site. Using AmeriFlux towers to determine the canopy values needed to calculate the omega decoupling factor, we focused on the Kernza perennial crops being grown at the Land Institute in Salina, Kansas (KLS), in comparison to a natural grassland in Manhattan, Kansas (KON), a typical land cover model in Lawrence, Kansas (KFS), and an annual crop site in Lamont, Oklahoma (ARM). These results will allow us to move forward in the investigation of perennial crops as a sustainable food source.

ResumoDaytime equatorial electrojet currents (EEJ) are known to amplify geomagnetic variations on the ground in the equatorial region, with the possible exception of Pc3 pulsations for which there are reports of both amplification and damping in the pulsation amplitude near the magnetic equator. To clarify the EEJ effects on ground continuous pulsations (Pc) in the Brazilian equatorial region, we statistically analyzed the amplitude structure of Pc3 (10 45 s) and Pc5 (150 600 s) pulsations recorded preferably during quiet days at multiple equatorial to low latitude stations (L = 1.00 1.12) nearly aligned along the 10° magnetic meridian. It was observed that diurnal Pc5s were amplified at all stations of the equatorial region, but mainly at those closest to the dip equator (latitudes less than 2°), whereas diurnal Pc3s were preferentially damped at equatorial stations, especially at one station under the dip equator. We interpret these differences as associated with different mechanisms of pulsation generation and transmission, and to the increase of Cowling conductivity in the diurnal equatorial ionosphere. Daytime Pc5s are transmitted horizontally in the TM0 mode from polar latitudes and amplified in the equatorial region by the higher ionospheric conductivity. On the other hand, daytime Pc3s are preferably upstream waves generated by ion-cyclotron instability on the bow shock, which propagate as compressional waves along the equatorial plane of the magnetosphere and are damped by the high conductivity of the equatorial ionosphere before reaching the ground. Our data also show significant sunrise terminator effects in Pc3 pulsations at the stations closest to the dip equator. However, on contrary to reported at other longitudes, in the Brazilian equatorial region the sunrise effect increases the H-to-D (north-south to east-west) amplitude ratio. We suggest that these significant differences could be arising from the markedly different magnetic declination angles between the Brazilian sector and the regions of the other studies. In our case, the H-component amplification can be explained by enhancements of the zonal (eastward) electric field near the magnetic equator driven by F region neutral winds (the F region dynamo) shortly after sunrise.

ResumoRivers supply the world's oceans with sediments and dissolved material that shape the coastline and drive elemental cycles. Most estimates of the flux of material from rivers to the ocean are based on measurements made upstream of any tidal influence on river flow. For large rivers, the region where tides alter flow but do not introcuce salty marine waters represent a large gap in our knowledge and quantification of aquatic processes such as carbon cycling. In the case of the Amazon River, this gap represents a reach of the river that is nearly 1,000 km long. Here, we performed a series of measurements at the mouth of the Amazon River to determine variability in geochemical parameters throughout tidal cycles. Suspended sediment concentrations were directly linked with river velocity, with the lowest levels observed during river flow reversal (i.e. incoming tide) and the highest levels observed at outgoing tide with max river velocity. Other parameters such as the concentration of carbon dioxide showed a similar relationship with river velocity, suggesting that biological activity also responds to changing flow conditions. These results suggest that tidal river dynamics need to be considered when evaluating mass flux from large rivers.

ResumoThe geologic record shows that hundreds of pole reversals have occurred throughout Earth's history. The mean interval between the poles reversals is roughly 200 to 300 thousand years and the last reversal occurred around 780 thousand years ago. Pole reversal is a slow process, during which the strength of the magnetic field decreases, become more complex, with the appearance of more than two poles for some time and then the field strength increases, changing polarity. Along the process, the magnetic field configuration changes, leaving the Earth-like planet vulnerable to the harmful effects of the Sun. Understanding what happens with the magnetosphere during these pole reversals is an open topic of investigation. Only recently PIC codes are used to modeling magnetospheres. Here we use the particle code iPIC3D [Markidis et al, Mathematics and Computers in Simulation, 2010] to simulate an Earth-like magnetosphere at three different times along the pole reversal process. The code was modified, so the Earth-like magnetic field is generated using an expansion in spherical harmonics with the Gauss coefficients given by a MHD simulation of the Earths core [Glatzmaier et al, Nature, 1995; 1999; private communication to L.E.A.V.]. Simulations show the qualitative behavior of the magnetosphere, such as the current structures. Only the planet magnetic field was changed in the runs. The solar wind is the same for all runs. Preliminary results show the formation of the Chapman-Ferraro current in the front of the magnetosphere in all the cases. Run for the middle of the reversal process, the low intensity magnetic field and its asymmetrical configuration the current structure changes and the presence of multiple poles can be observed. In all simulations, a structure similar to the radiation belts was found. Simulations of more severe solar wind conditions are necessary to determine the real impact of the reversal in the magnetosphere.
