AbstractThe scheduling or autonomous planning is one of the areas of artificial intelligence (IA), which develops the process to define the sequence of actions to achieve the objectives established through computational methods. Through an initiative of the ESA (European Space Agency) emerges the SPASS (Software Product Assurance for Autonomy Spacecraft on-board), a project that resulted in a job that recommends extensive testing and use of simulation techniques, with application of two software components, the plausibility checker and bag security, proposed by (Blanquart, 2004). The purpose of this paper is to show a theoretical approach to implemente a plausibility checker and safety bag as described by (Blanquart, 2004).

AbstractReal-time systems are commonplace in satellites. In this system type, software has become a crucial factor to satellites success projects because its complexity quickly increases, along with cost. Some factors that contribute to increase complexity of software are: it interacts with different kind of hardware, it has several states and for each state commonly a different control law, it has hard-deadlines, and it must have a high level of reliability. Attitude and Orbit Control System (AOCS) is a good example for this type of system. With the necessity to launch more satellites, Brazilian National Institute for Space Research (INPE) has been carrying out research on modeling and verifying real-time software, like a lot of other space agencies and research institutes. The main focus is to obtain a better balance between dependability, schedule, and cost. However, instead of creating one more brand-new, one-of-a-kind approach, method or process, we are trying to use Object Management Group (OMG) specifications, which have been proposed and adopted by community in some degree. Another concern from this INPE research is to be independent from commercial tools establishing itself on open source software. This paper presents a detailed approach to implement Model-Driven Architecture (MDA) in real-time space software based strongly in OMG specifications. It shows how models are defined, linked, verified and transformed, as well as a set of tools for this. We place special emphasis on fUML (Semantics of a Foundational Subset for Executable UML Models) and MARTE (UML Profile for Modeling and Analysis of Real-Time Embedded Systems) that allow us to define a completely executable Platform Independent Model (PIM). At the end, a case study is presented, along with an assessment of the proposed approach. This assessment allowed us to conclude that MDA, following the proposal presented, has advantages versus the current approaches applied to real-time space software development.

AbstractHybrid systems are characterized by a composition of discrete and continuous dynamics. In particular, the system has a continuous evolution and occasional jumps. The jumps are caused either by controllable, uncontrollable external events or by its continuous evolution. The continuous evolution and these jumps in control loops are the origins from the most stringent real-time demands. With the necessity to launch more satellites, Brazilian National Institute for Space Research (INPE) has been carrying out research on modeling and verifying hybrid systems, of which its main focus is to obtain a better balance between dependability, schedule, and cost. We are attempting to use Object Management Group (OMG) specifications to model discrete events. We are focusing mainly in Modelica (with some degree of Scicoslab) to model continuous dynamics. Another concern addressed by this, INPE, research is to be independent from commercial tools, establishing itself on open source software. This paper presents an approach to implement Model-Driven Architecture in hybrid systems based on vendor neutral specifications. It shows how the models are defined, traced and used, as well as a set of tools for this. SysML (Systems Modeling Language), and MARTE (Modeling and Analysis of Real-Time Embedded Systems) allowed us to define a Computation Independent Model focused mainly on high-level structure and behavior (state oriented). At the end, a case study is presented (inverted pendulum). From this case study, we have concluded that the proposed approach can complement uncovered topics in current research applied to hybrid systems development and maintenance.

AbstractTo write a satellite simulator specification for a relatively simple satellite may be simple as the information can be shared among the small group of hardware experts, system engineers and software programmers. However, this becomes extremely difficult as the number of people involved increases. This paper focuses on questions related to how to write effective simulator specification documents to describe the behavior of complex satellites, in such a manner that the specification be comprehensive and clear to all the people involved in the simulator project development. Subsystem designers, system architects, electrical, mechanic and software engineers, as well as mathematicians and programmers with a diverse assortment of backgrounds and different points of view are supposed to work together towards a common goal, which is the development of an operational satellite simulator. Consequently, the greatest challenge to build a satellite simulator is to find a common language, understandable and acceptable by every stakeholder, yet powerful enough to describe the satellite behavior in sufficient detail. The current existing standards for satellite simulators were found to lack some important details concerning how to write specifications of the models, in a precise manner. This paper presents the representation of the knowledge about the subsystems behavior in every its states through well-organized tables. This solution aimed to reduce the gap in the language to represent the satellite behavior in the Specification of the Operational Simulator of the CBERS 3&4 Satellite being developed at INPE.

AbstractThis paper describes a new software application intended for assisting human operators in monitoring the health of spacecraft in orbit. Its basic design is inherited from another satellite simulator developed for planning validation, which consisted of a single rule-based inference engine with associated database files. These database files contained all the system dynamics rules, internal state parameters, and scheduled events covering a whole simulation session. Despite its advantages, this approach results in complex systems that become harder to maintain as the number of rules and parameters increases. The new approach tries to address this problem by dividing the database into smaller modules, each comprising an inference engine with smaller database files. Several inference machines are run simultaneously as threads controlled by a manager module. All rule-based threads communicate with each other via a central data structure, maintained by the manager module, which stores all internal parameters of the simulator model. The simulation parameters values are represented internally in engineering units, which are encoded into telemetry data or decoded from telecommand messages by network interfacing modules, also running as threads. Simulated parameter values are compared to satellite telemetry received by ground stations in real-time during passes and, if the difference between corresponding values surpasses its predefined range, an alarm is triggered to warn the operator. The description of the simulator presented in this work comprises the satellite ground control system architecture, the rule-based inference engine and its database data structures, and the integrated architecture including the satellite control monitoring system.

AbstractOne of the main causes for the growing demand for satellites controllers and control centers is the increase number of satellites launched from our planet. Some of these needs are supplied by new controllers, but it will soon be a time on which this kind of monitoring will be overtaken by the growing number of satellites to control, without an auto-generated plan process. In this real scenario, it is important to have, before thinking of implementing a planner or even before create a Knowledge Base equipped with meta-models, a development process divided in very well defined steps. Each of these steps must have a target objective to reach and one or more than one software artifacts to generate, using for this techniques in fields like the knowledge acquisition and tools for successful software design, such as the Unified Modeling Language (UML), one of the most significant modeling tool used in commercial systems. A development process for an automatically generated plan, based on the satellite components status, the ground positions stations and its orbit frequency, must be used as soon as possible, in order to grant our capability to safely control all of our satellites. This paper object is to show in full detail the PRODESEA, an auto-generated plan development process useful when a satellite control planning is needed to reach the above goals. For didactic purpose, this paper also illustrates one case study in a satellites control domain.
