ResumoA Lidar tuned to sodium resonance line at 589 nm has been operated at São José dos Campos, Brazil (23 deg S, 46 deg W) since 1993 processing the Rayleigh signal from which the temperatures from ~35 to ~65 km are retrieved in a nightly mean basis. In order to remove tidal effects only profiles obtained from 18:30 LT to 23:30 LT were considered in this analysis. We used these nightly profiles to determine the monthly temperature profiles from April 1993 to April 2014. The mean temperature characteristics for every year and for the whole period are obtained and do not differ too much from the previous climatology using shorter data series. A model including solar cycle, southern oscillation index, QBO, Annual and Semiannual oscillations and Linear trends has been fitted to the monthly temperatures every 3 km from 36 to 63 km. Variable linear trends with altitudes are determined with a maximum negative trends at 54-55 km attaining 3.15 K/decade.

ResumoMeteor radars have been used as an important instrument for improving our knowledge about dynamics in the Mesosphere and Lower Thermosphere (MLT) region. However, instrumental limitations hinder its use for measuring the vertical winds and momentum fluxes. According to Babu et al. (2012) all-sky meteor radars are able to infer vertical wind when using a large number of meteor echoes centered at the meteor ablation peak. On the other hand, simpler all-sky meteor radars can not reach this condition, leading low confidence on its results. In order to evaluate the accuracy of vertical winds values we have performed several tests based on a simple model considering real meteor distributions and theoretical equations of MLT winds motion. Moreover, we have also considered a random error simulating instrumental measurements errors on radial velocities. As a result of our tests, Brazilian SKYiMETs radars data can be used for this purpose with an accuracy of ~ 1 m/s, what means that we can not measure weaker flows. This is reasonable once planetary scale waves, like Kelvin waves, can reach vertical winds around 4 m/s, and also gravity waves can reach values even larger as 20 m/s. Furthermore, we could recover very well the period of about 3.5 days for Kelvin Wave. These results are important since they support the use of meteor radars with the purpose of inferring vertical fluxes of horizontal momentum.

ResumoMedium-scale gravity waves have been observed in the OH airglow images at Sao Joao do Cariri (36.5ºW; 7.4ºS). During two years of observation by about 100 gravity waves have been observed and their horizontal parameters have been estimated. Most of the gravity waves propagates to the Northeastward direction. These waves range from few minutes to almost two hours of observed period. Regarding to the observed phase speed, the gravity waves range from 50 m/s to 200 m/s. It corresponds to wavelength, which extends from 50 km to 400 km. In addition, the vertical characteristics of these waves have been investigated using TIMED/SABER satellite data, ever coincident sounding of the satellite crossed the field of view of the imager. Only few coincident measurements were possible. In this paper, we have studied two of these events in details. According to the theory of gravity waves, these observed waves can be either primary or secondary gravity waves. Studying the vertical and horizontal characteristics of these waves, we will be able to know the frequency of occurrence of secondary gravity waves in the equatorial region.

ResumoThe dynamical characteristics of the mesosphere and lower thermosphere region (MLT) can be studied from the atmospheric fields, such as wind and temperature. In this study we have investigated the MLT wind response to solar maxima 23 and 24 and solar minima 23 at low latitude in the Southern Hemisphere. The database consists of wind measurements from the VHF meteor radar at Cachoeira Paulista (22.7°S, 45°W), which were obtained during the periods from March 1999 to July 2006, from September 2007 to October 2008 and from June 2012 to October 2014. The results have revealed a possible effect of the solar cycle upon zonal and the meridional wind behavior, in which the eastward winds from May to July below 90 km during 2000-2002 and 2012-2014 were weaker than during 2005-2008 interval, whereas above 90 km the westward winds were stronger for years of solar maximum than years of solar minimum. From correlation analysis, it is possible to see that during June for all altitudes, the solar activity may have contributed to weaken eastward winds below 90 km and enhance westward winds above 90 km during this period. The southward winds were more intense for period of May-August at altitudes below 90 km during solar maximum years.

ResumoSolar X-ray and extreme ultraviolet (EUV) photons are responsible for ionizing the terrestrial atmosphere and create the ionosphere. During solar flares, a fast increase in the electron density at various altitude regions takes place due to the abrupt enhance of the X-ray and EUV fluxes toward Earth. With these changes in the ionosphere, radio communication and navigation can be drastically affected. The magnitudes of these kind of Space Weather events can be related to the X-ray peak brightness and the duration, which drive the intensity of the ionosphere response when the associated electromagnetic wave hit the sunlit side of the Earth atmosphere. Other aspects defining the severity of damages to HF radio communications and LF navigation signals in a certain area are the local time, the solar zenith angle, and the position of the flare in the solar disc. In order to improve the understanding of radio signal loss or degradation in the Brazilian sector due to solar X-ray emissions, we analyze total electron content (TEC) maps and curves at selected sites obtained by a GPS network formed by tents of dual-frequency receivers spread all over Brazilian territory. We observe different ionospheric local changes during several X-ray events in the 0.1-0.8 nm range identified by GOES satellite. Considering the results, we have made an estimation of the severity and range of ionospheric disturbances in the equatorial and low-latitude Brazilian region affecting space based communication for different events based on their characteristics.

ResumoIn this work we investigate the response of the low latitude ionosphere to Solar Wind High-speed streams (SWHSSs) and Corotating Interaction Regions (CIRs)-driven recurrent geomagnetic activity during low and descending phase of solar activity of the solar cycle 23. Intense magnetic field regions called Corotating Interaction Regions or CIRs are created by the interaction of fast streams and slow streams ejected by long duration coronal holes in Sun. This interaction leads to an increase in the mean interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) which causes moderate and recurrent geomagnetic storms when interacts with the Earths magnetosphere. The ionosphere can be affected by several ways, such as an increase (or decrease) of the plasma density, intensification of plasma instabilities during post-sunset or post-midnight hours and subsequent development of plasma irregularities/spread-F, as well as occurrence of plasma scintillation. Auroral heating leads to the development of wave activity and Traveling Ionospheric Disturbances, or TIDs, which can affect the middle and the low latitude ionosphere. We analyze the magnetosphere-thermosphere-ionosphere system variation under the impact of events of CIRs/HSSs, which occurred during the solar cycle 23, using multi instrument data and discuss its relevance for Aeronomic and Space Weather studies.

ResumoThe equatorial spread F and plasma bubble that occur in the equatorial-low latitude ionosphere can drastically affect a large number of technological devices that are present in modern life. The basic physics of the plasma bubble and irregularities is relatively well known but there are some aspects related to their day-to-day variability that are not completely resolved. In this sense numerical models allow a detailed evaluation of the influence of distinct physical parameters on the plasma bubble generation and evolution. We have developed a model for plasma bubble studies that solves the differential equations for the electric potential and for ion density, as well as the motion equations for electrons and ions, in a three dimensional frame (latitude, longitude and height). This model is used to investigate the time evolution of the plasma bubbles. In order to test the validity of the model for the Brazilian region the input parameters are derived from observations. The numerical model results were used to derive the emission rate in 135.6 nm. The results displayed in a latitude versus longitude plane show a reversed-C shape, similar to the observational results from Kil et al. (JGR, 2009). The possible explanations for this peculiar behavior are discussed in this work.

ResumoThe diurnal and semidiurnal lunar tides are investigated in the ionosphere using Total Electron Content (TEC) estimated from the Global Positioning System (GPS) over Brazil. GPS TEC measurements from January 2011 to December 2012 have been used with a spatial resolution of 0.5° in longitude/latitude and a temporal resolution of 10 minutes. Using this temporal resolution was possible extract the characteristics of the lunar tide from the data. Salient features of this oscillation are presented and discussed in this work. For instance, the semidiurnal lunar tide is dominant comparing to the diurnal. Significant longitudinal and latitudinal variability have been observed in both components, which reveal a complex dynamics and structure of the local lunar tide. Seasonal variability has been observed as well.
