ResumoAnalysis of longitudinal differences in ionospheric parameters can illuminate variety of mechanisms responsible for ionospheric variability. In this study, we aim to 1) quantitatively describe major features of longitudinal differences in peak electron density in the low-latitude ionosphere; 2) examine differences in ionospheric variability at different longitude sectors, and 3) illustrate longitudinal differences in ionospheric response to a large disturbance event, sudden stratospheric warming of 2016. We examine NmF2 observations by a network of ionosondes in the American (30-80W) and Asian (110-170E) longitudinal sectors. Selected instruments are located in the vicinity of EIA troughs (Jicamarca, Sao Luis, Guam, Kwajalein), northern and southern crests of EIA (Boa Vista, Tucuman, Cachoeira Paulista, Okinawa), and beyond EIA crests (Ramey, Yamagawa, Kokubunji). To examine main ionospheric features at each location, we use long-term datasets collected at each site to construct empirical models that describe variations in NmF2 as a function of local time, season, solar flux, and geomagnetic activity. This set of empirical models can be used to accurately describe background ionospheric behavior and serve as a set of observational benchmarks for global circulation models. It reveals, for example, higher NmF2 in the EIA trough in the Asian sector as compared to the American sector. Further, we quantitatively describe variability in NmF2 as a difference between local observations and local empirical model, and find that American sectors EIA trough has overall higher variability that maximizes for all local times during wintertime, while Asian sector trough variability does not change significantly with season. Additionally, local empirical models are used to isolate ionospheric features resulting from dynamical disturbances of different origin (e.g. geomagnetic storms, convective activity, sudden stratospheric warming events, etc.). We illustrate this approach with the case of sudden stratospheric warming of 2016.

ResumoDuring the solar cycle 24 there was a very intense geomagnetic storm, called St. Patrick´s Day storm and the effects of this storm on ionosphere has become a topic of extensive space weather investigation. The Dst during this storm reached -223 nT on March 17, 2015 at 23:00 UT. Special efforts have been devoted so far to investigate many aspects of the St. Patrick´s Day ionospheric storm such as the prompt penetration electric fields (PPEFs), GPS-TEC changes, electron density disturbances, plasma drift, O+ concentration modification, hemispherical asymmetry developments, equatorial ionization anomaly (EIA) modification, and ionospheric irregularities. Besides all these important studies, there are some essential aspects, which have not been addressed yet, related to the occurrence of ionospheric irregularities with different scale sizes. In this paper, we present and discuss the generation and suppression of ionospheric irregularities during March 2015, using the observations conducted in the Latin American Sector from 4 ionosondes (ESF) and 20 GPS-TEC stations (ROT phase fluctuation), which includes the St. Patrick´s Day geomagnetic storm period. Suppression of large-small scales ionospheric irregularities has occurred during the main and second night of the recovery phases. However, during the first night of recovery phase there was post-midnight ionospheric irregularities.

ResumoMedium Scale Traveling Ionospheric Disturbances (MSTIDs) were studied using detrended Total Electron Content (dTEC) maps and keograms over South-Southeast of Brazil during the period from December 2012 to February 2016. In total 826 MSTIDs were observed and they present average values of horizontal wavelength, period, and horizontal phase velocity of 445.19 ± 106.70 km, 23.58 ± 3.65 min e 322.68 ± 80.95 m/s, respectively. The direction of propagation presented anisotropy depending on the season. In addition, the occurrences of MSTIDs were during the daytime between 11-15 LT in winter and other seasons near to solar terminator (17-19 LT). Furthermore, the seasonality of MSTIDs has a higher occurrence rate in winter. The MSTIDs characteristics also suggest that gravity wave activities in the thermosphere, mesosphere and troposphere could play an important role in generating the MSTIDs.

ResumoGlobal Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) is becoming a reliable tool for use in air navigation systems. Its use as the main technology for determination of airplanes positioning has various economic and logistic benefits but it depends strongly on the ionospheric layer influences. The Brazilian sector ionosphere, mainly over the equatorial ionization anomaly (EIA), presents remarkable errors in the GNSS signal as compared to North America and Europe. In order to study the total electron content latitudinal variation of the Brazilian ionosphere we used a pair of GNSS receivers on the ground, one located in the equatorial region (Sao Luis) and other in the southern crest of the EIA (Cachoeira Paulista), to collect the GNSS observables and calculate the vertical TEC using different methods that has proven to work well to describe the ionospheric behavior in the North America and in Europe. We compared this results with a modified Nagoya TEC calculation method used by the EMBRACE (Estudo e Monitoramento BRAsileiro do Clima Espacial - Brazilian Study and Monitoring of Space Weather) program. This work intends to follow the performance of different TEC tuning methods to evaluate the spurious effects of the ionospheric EIA gradients in the TEC determination under typical conditions of the low-latitudes ionosphere in the Brazilian sector. The calculated TEC under different solar cycle conditions, geomagnetic activity, and seasonal variations show deviations in the performance of each method and stress the importance of well adjust the GNSS observations to local conditions in order to optimize the TEC evaluation. This study contributes to a better understanding of local GNSS signal errors in the global intent of offering conditions to improve the accuracy, integrity, availability, and continuity requirements for the use of GNSS for air navigation in South America.

ResumoThe ionosphere over the peak of the anomaly represents a treat for navigation systems based on GNSS. Brazilian territory is mostly under this harsh layer for satellite communication in general and in particular for navigation, like GPS users, where their receivers tracking performance are damaged under scintillation conditions. Ionospheric scintillation is responsible for significant degradation in the accuracy of navigation and positioning. Phase shifts accompanied by amplitude fades significantly degrades the signal-to-noise ratio of the received signal disrupting the channel and loosing navigation performance. The stronger the scintillations are, more difficulty will be for the GNSS receiver tracking loops to recover the phase and code replicas. These phenomena under specific geophysical conditions may severely affect the system availability and positioning. In this work the temporal characteristics of amplitude scintillation will be analyzed at the three available GPS frequencies, L1, L2C and L5. Aspect like fading duration and depth will be evaluated and compared among the three available frequencies for the current solar cycle. This work will use GPS scintillation data recorded during six months of data during 2014 to 2015 at three stations under Brazilian territory located near the southern crest of the equatorial ionization anomaly. The analysis will be performed focusing on the fading profile of the three frequencies comparing how the fading of those signals behave statistically between them. Aspects like loss of lock, spatial orientation between the signal across the ionospheric irregularity will also be discussed showing how much more susceptible the new frequencies might be in comparison to the widely used and studied L1 frequency.

ResumoAirglow and wind measurements from the Brazilian equatorial region have been used to investigate the presence and the effects of the 3-4 day Ultra-Fast Kelvin Wave in the MLT. Airglow data came from a multichannel photometer, which measures the OI5577, O2b(0-1) and OH(6-2) airglow integrated intensities and the OH rotational temperature. Wind measurements were performed by a meteor radar, which provides zonal and meridional wind between 80 and 100 km altitude. Both instruments are installed at São João do Cariri (7.4°S, 36.5°W) and provided quasi-simultaneous data in 2005. The results show that the 3-4 day oscillations appear intermittently along the year in both airglow and wind. The 3-4 day oscillations compatible with Ultra-fast Kelvin wave were observed simultaneously in both airglow and wind in March, August and October/November. Ultra-fast Kelvin wave induced amplitudes in the airglow overcome 40% in OI5577 and O2b(0-1) emissions, while in OH(6-2) emission the amplitudes range from 15 to 20%. In the temperature, amplitudes were near 3 K. The presence of the 3-4 day oscillation in the airglow seems to be affected by the local time of the measurements, which occurred particularly in OI5577 emission. It was observed that taking pre-midnight airglow data could hide the presence of 3-4 day oscillation. Such feature is related to the interaction between the Ultra-Fast Kelvin Wave and the diurnal tide, which is indicated by a modulation of the diurnal tide amplitude in the zonal wind at the period of the Ultra-Fast Kelvin Wave.

ResumoDisturbance electric field during space weather events can cause severe modifications in the Equatorial and low - midlatitude ionospheric plasma dynamics and related phenomenology. Penetration electric fields, of undershielding or over-shielding types, and disturbance dynamo electric field can cause anomalous development of plasma bubbles even during their non-occurrence season, or can lead to suppression of their normal development. These effects are dependent on the local time and longitude of the observations. Large changes in the Hall and Pedersen conductivities can occur due to storm induced extra E layer ionization or modifications in F layer plasma density, as a result of which the penetration electric fields may produce, among other effects, (1) plasma bubble zonal drift velocity reversal to westward, (2) large/abnormal F layer plasma uplift, (3) sporadic E layer disruption or its formation with instabilities. Beside these effects, the equatorial ionization anomaly is known to suffer latitudinal expansion and retraction. In this paper we will discuss some outstanding response features of the low altitude ionosphere under disturbance electric field as diagnosed by Digisondes, radars and optical imagers in the South American longitude sector, a region that is strongly influenced by the South Atlantic Magnetic anomaly (SAMA). The results will be compared and discussed with satellite observations (DMSP and C/NOFS) and modeling results based on SUPIM simulation of a realistic low latitude ionosphere.

ResumoIn this work, we use the vertical total electron content (TEC) obtained from Boston College South American data chain. The data are only for the day March 24, 2015. Three latitudinal ranges covering -30º to 30º degrees, which are distributed along the magnetic meridian crossing Jicamarca (Geog. Longitude: -77º), Boa Vista-Campo Grande (Geog. Longitude: -57º) and São Luís (Geog. Longitude: -44º), respectively. Our assimilation data criterion consist of a latitudinal adjustment of the electron density calculated by the Sheffield University Plasmasphere Ionosphere Model at INPE (SUPIM-INPE) applying the same proportion as obtained from the ratio between the observed TEC and calculated by SUPIM-INPE. F-region critical frequency (foF2) and TEC registered by Digisondes operating at Boa Vista, São Luís and Campo Grande were also used in the result validations. In general, Boston College TECs show good agreement with those obtained from Digisondes for all locations, except over São Luís near 00 and 12 UT and over Campo Grande after 14 UT. The direct results from SUPIM-INPE for both foF2 and TEC have not shown good agreement with the observational data. On the other hand, it was found excellent results, mainly for TEC, after applying the data assimilation. The proportion criterion is underestimating the values of foF2 between evening and sunrise. SUPIM-INPE model seems to be overestimating the electron density decay for altitude above F-region peak, causing low ratio in observed/calculated TEC values and, consequently, low foF2.
