AbstractThe objective of this study was to investigate the impact of ENSO events in the Southern Brazil temperature, taking account the PDO phases. Two indices were calculated with monthly maximum and minimum temperatures records of six well distributed stations of southern Brazil (Rio Grande do Sul state). Both indices were categorized in three classes, in order to obtain the extremes using percentile 10 and 90. Contingency tables were made to analyze the seasonal, simultaneous, and 3, 6, 9 and 12 months lagged relationships between ENSO events (El Niño, neutral, La Niña), and extreme temperature anomalies (categories), considering the PDO phases, during the 1913-1999 period. This analysis showed that there were more temperature positive (negative) extreme events in El Niño (La Niña) conditions. La Niña makes both maximum and minimum temperatures increase while El Niño impact more the minimum temperature, to increasing it. Considering PDO phases, in warm (cold) phase there were more duration of El Niño (La Niña) events. When PDO is negative, the impact of El Niño is stronger and more persistent in the temperature increase than in negative phase. The same occurs with La Niña and the decrease of temperature. Cross-Wavelets showed that PDO and ENSO interacts in both time scales, with ENSO leading PDO in the scale of 4-7 years, and PDO leading ENSO in 16-28 years. Both PDO and ENSO are coherent with the temperature indices in the scale of 2-7 years, but this coherence appears more in the periods of positive phase of PDO. Thus, only ENOS do not explain the climate variability in this region, and it is important to consider the PDO phases in studies of impacts of ENSO in the temperature extremes in Southern Brazil.
