AbstractThis paper describes TerraHidro that is a distributed hydrologic modeling platform. TerraHidro is general purpose water resources system that presents a new concept to represent water flows based on graph structure, in the geographic information system (GIS) context. The drainage extractions and Amazonian basin delimitations using TerraHidro have been compared with ArcGis Hydro Tools regarding to drainage extractions and to show the TerraHidro availability the drainage of Amazonian sub basins, called Xingu, Purus and Tapajos are presented.

AbstractThis work presents a methodology to create probability maps for spatial continuous attributes based on indicator geostatistical approaches. The indicator kriging and the indication simulation approaches can be used to infer approximations of conditional cumulative distribution functions (cdf) for continuous attributes at different spatial locations of interest. The cdfs are conditioned to a set of spatial points containing continuous attribute values and sampled in a geographic region of interest. The conditional cdfs are then used to infer probability maps of exceeding, or being smaller than, a given threshold, or a predefined attribute, value. In this work it was used an elevation data set sampled in Florianópolis Island, the capital of Brazilian state Santa Catarina, as a case study to illustrate the methodology to create such probability maps.

AbstractLand-use choice routines embedded in a human-environment system (HES) model must meet more requirements than those in models typically presented in purely economic or psychological studies. This study compares the strengths and shortcomings of two common empirical methods - multi-nominal logistic (MNL) regression and classification tree (CT) analysis for specifying landuse choices in a multi-agent system simulation framework (Land Use Dynamics Simulator - LUDAS). First, we described design concepts of land-use decisionmaking mechanism in the LUDAS framework in which households land-use choice is a component. Next, we compared two common methods for modeling the landuse choice with respect to pre-established criteria: a MNL model was specified to represent assumed rational behavior of human agents, while the CT model used a data-fit hierarchical rule set to represent heuristic process of reflex behavior. The study was conducted based on an intensive household-farm survey in a Central Vietnams mountainous catchment. Based on the comparative analysis, we recommended explicit strategies for developing structurally realistic models that utilizes the complementarities of the both techniques to better represent bounded rational, yet adaptive, land-use choices in a HES model in the face of uncertainty.

AbstractThis paper presents a method to estimate the uncertainty in a DEM using Cluster Analysis. The method considers that there are always more than one DEM available for a specific area, therefore, a statistical analysis can be performed and used to create a map with clusters of high and low uncertainty in elevation. The resulting map is particularly important for simulation applications, where the simulation process can apply the uncertainty information to select the best DEM for a region and to define the spatial uncertainty of the simulated result. The method is tested in a region of Sao Paulo State in Brazil, with heterogeneous terrain features. The results show that the method can be used not only in simulation, but also to define geographic regions where data collection can be improved.

AbstractRegion based methods are indicated to classify image with strong heterogeneity, where only the spectral information is not enough. Different approaches have been proposed to perform this kind of classification. This study presents a new approach for region based classification that consists in use the Support Vector Machine (SVM) method with Bhattacharyya kernel function. A high resolution IKONOS image was classified. The classification results shows that SVM method using the Bhattacharyya kernel is better than Minimum Distance Classifier and conventional SVM.
