AbstractWildfires plays a fundamental intervention in global biogeochemical cycle, by the chemical reaction occurring in the combustion process, and the organic compounds present in vegetation returns to the atmosphere and soil in a cyclical behavior. Therefore, the main objective of this work is to develop a method to estimate the instantaneous fire size in Brazil using Thematic Mapper (TM) aboard of Landsat 5 and Enhanced Thematic Mapper Plus (ETM+) aboard of Landsat 7. The results indicate that active fire to astures/grasslands is approximately 38% higher than that found for forest areas, 31% higher than the same coefficient used to estimate the fire size in areas of herbaceous and shrub vegetation and 11% higher than the coefficient used in agricultural areas.

AbstractRiparian forests (permanent preservation areas) are established by the Brazilian environmental legislation, i.e., the Brazilian Forestry Code (CFB) as the main form of conservation of forest fragments and other types of natural vegetation on rural properties. These areas are the main constituents of riparian ecosystems that provide various ecosystem services, such as protection of water resources, rehabilitation of ecological processes and conservation of biodiversity, and could be the only systems capable of ensuring the potential long-term conservation of areas of natural vegetation. In spite of the diverse ecosystem services that these forests provide, most Brazilian rural properties do not have riparian forests which must be delineated from parameters defined by CFB, such as the size of water courses and water bodies considering the greatest seasonal flood level and pre-established widths. In this context, the aim of this study was to map and quantify the deficits in riparian forests on sugarcane fields in the State of Sao Paulo - Brazil, the largest national producer of the crop. For this, we used remote sensing data of different spatial and temporal scales and hydrography data provided by official agencies of the country. Riparian forests were delimited throughout the entire sugarcane producing region by visual interpretation of satellite images from Landsat (Geocover mosaic) and from CBERS 2B with spatial resolution of 14.25 and 2.7 meters and by automatic object-oriented classification. The identification of these riparian ecosystems from remote sensing data is difficult and time consuming, and the quantification is often underestimated because features such as vegetation and soil types of riparian ecosystems are not considered. In this study, these parameters were defined manually after the identification of the features that were possible to detect in the images. The delimitation of riparian forests in function of the CFB parameters was carried out automatically by generating buffers of different widths using tools available in Geographic Information Systems. The results show that it is possible to identify, to monitor and most importantly, to control riparian forests on sugarcane fields from remote sensing images. Considering a total of 5,179,536.5 hectares planted with sugarcane in 2009/2010 and 3,622,625.5 hectares of permanent preservation areas, 1.34 per cent of the sugarcane crop is found in areas that should be maintained as permanent preservation areas, resulting in a total deficit of 69,300 ha. Based on an initial analysis, from the annual mapping of different types of sugarcane harvest (i.e. green harvest and pre-harvest burning) provided by the Canasat Project of the National Institute for Space Research (INPE), we observed that in most areas of traditional cultivation and expansion of sugarcane in which deficits in permanent preservation areas were quantified, conservationist growing practices such as green harvest are also not put into effect.

AbstractRemote sensing images have been used to map the sugarcane crop since 2003 in South central region of Brazil which is responsible for almost 90% of Brazilians sugarcane production. These maps are used to forecast sugarcane area available for harvest, to evaluate the direct land-use change related to sugarcane expansion, and to monitor the pre-harvest sugarcane burning practice. In the state of Mato Grosso (MT) the sugarcane area has increased almost 70% during the last decade going from 170 to 288 thousand hectares. Sugarcane expansion in MT has been observed mainly on pasture land (77%) followed by annual crops (21%) and forest (2%). The relative area of pre-harvest burning has decreased in MT from 44% in 2006 to 17% in 2011. The remote sensing images have provided objective information contributing to several environmental issues related to sustainable ethanol production from sugarcane in MT. Another application of remote sensing images in MT is the monitoring of soy plantations in deforested land in the Amazon biome. Within the Soy Moratorium context farmers who planted soy in opened areas after July 24, 2006, would not have their production commercialized by international soy trader companies. Remote sensing time series of the MODIS sensor combined with Landsat images, aerial survey, and field work have been an effective method to detect and evaluate the amount of soy plantation in recent deforestations. From 2007 to 2010 a total of 688,460 ha have been deforested in the Amazon biome of MT according to the Amazon Deforestation Monitoring Project (PRODES). Soy plantations were found in 8,385 ha which corresponds to 1.2% of the total deforested area in MT during the Soy Moratorium. Results indicate that the moratorium is having an inhibitory effect on deforestation and soy has been a minor driver of recent deforestation.

AbstractThis work intends to show the first and preliminary results from a research project called Atlantic Carbon Experiment (ACEx). The ACEX is part of an innovative and promising scientific effort, contributing to a better understanding of the chemical, physical and dynamic ocean-atmosphere interaction in micro-and meso-scales in the Southwest Atlantic trade flows in this interface. This project will conduct fieldwork aboard Brazilian ships. The first cruise was named ACEx1 and was conducted aboard the Brazilian Navy R/V Cruzeiro do Sul, in December 2010 and was divided into two phases, the first between the cities of Rio Grande (RS) and Itajai (SC) and the second stage between the cities of Itajai and Rio de Janeiro (RJ). The cruise comprised transects perpendicular to the shore, in order to capture contrasts between shore and off shore region. In the first stage, the activities of the group involved with the ACEx relied on measurements of atmospheric carbon dioxide concentration and standard meteorological variables. Weather balloons were launched with radiosonde sensors. In the second stage, there were no launched radiosondes, as these were intended for the study of ocean-atmosphere interaction in the areas where the largest thermal gradients were zonal (horizontal) in the ocean. As an initial approach aiming at ultimately having in situ measurements of momentum, latent and sensible heat and CO2 fluxes, a simple eddy covariance system was installed aboard the ship. It consisted in an infrared gas analyzer (IRGA) a three-dimensional sonic anemometer and a motion sensor (used to the correction of flows). In this study, the limitations of such measurements are presented, in terms of the motion corrections necessary and their effect to the turbulence signals. Turbulent velocity spectra and scalar flux cospectra are largely affected by the motion and the associated correction. Energy fluxes are then compared to those obtained from classical parameterizations used in air-sea interaction studies. In future campaigns, a more robust system will be used for flux observations. Therefore, through the realization of this project it is expected the training of a multidisciplinary team able to make in situ measurements of fluxes of momentum, heat and CO2 in the southwest Atlantic, a region of great importance for the sequestration of atmospheric carbon dioxide. By analyzing the results, it is expected to enhance the understanding of the modes and processes related to the variability of oceanic and atmospheric flows, as well as the possible impacts of these processes in the study region. The in situ observations will also be used for studies in conjunction with satellite-derived data and will feed numerical modeling studies.

AbstractBrazil has about 110 Mha of pasture land concentrated in the Cerrado and Amazon biomes, from which 70 Mha (63,3 per cent) are in the process of degradation or are already degraded. The adoption of good management practices improving the quality of these pastures increases the productivity of livestock with consequent release of land for food and energy crop expansion. Major causes of pasture degradation in tropical and subtropical climate are related to inadequate management of both pasture land and grazing, which are responsible for: the loss of pasture vigor, the exposure of bare soil, and the appearance of invasive plants. The assessment of pasture degradation levels using biophysical parameters and contextual information of the vegetation in not trivial, even at field level. Proximal sensing techniques might be a useful approach to assess the levels of pasture degradation. Therefore, a field campaign was carried out from September 26 to November 12, 2011, visiting 200 pasture samples in the Cerrado and Amazon biomes. For each visited sample the specie of pasture grass was identified along with measurements of biophysical parameters such as: plant height and dry biomass weight collected in three subsamples of 1 m2. Also three digital camera images were captured at 2 m above ground level in vertical position. The RGB (red, green blue) images will now be transformed into intensity, hue, and saturation (IHS) components. Slicing and non supervised classification techniques should be applied on the HIS components to estimate the fractional cover of photosynthetic vegetation, non-photosynthetic vegetation and bare soil. For each digital camera images, random samples will be selected and visually interpreted to evaluate the results from the slicing and classification procedures. With the estimated fractional cover of photosynthetic vegetation, non-photosynthetic vegetation and bare soil the pasture degradation levels should be evaluated. It is expected that this methodology will be expedite and precise to contribute in the evaluation of pasture degradation levels in tropical and subtropical climate.

AbstractBiofuels have been cited as an alternative to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions related to fossil fuels use. However, its cultivation still faces some socio-economic and environmental challenges to overcome, in particular the elimination of the burning practice during harvest. This study aimed at estimating the GHG emissions avoided by replacing the sugarcane harvest system from burned to green harvest (mechanized) in sugarcane areas of São Paulo State, Brazil. Estimates were calculated considering the period from 2011 until 2021, when the burning practice should be eliminated, as established by law. Applying the IPCC (2006) methodologies, the annual emission balance contemplates both agricultural and mobile sources of GHG, according to the mean annual use of supplies (per hectare per year). The sources of GHG emission considered were associated with the following agricultural practices: i) sugarcane residue burning; ii) direct and indirect N2O emissions from N synthetic fertilizer applied on soil, organic composts such as vinasse and filtercake application and sugarcane residues left on soils after green harvest; iii) lime application; and iv) emission from fossil fuel used. Remote sensing images were used to evaluate whether the harvest was performed with or without the burning practice on a cultivated area of 4.72 Mha in crop year 2010/2011. It was found that 2.10 Mha (44.4%) were burned prior to harvest (Canasat, 2011). Considering an annual conversion rate from burned to green harvest of 200,000 ha during a period of 10 years, the burning practice will be eliminated by 2021 accounting for an avoided emission of 3.7 Mt CO2eq, not considering the soil carbon sequestration. In addition, applying the IPCC (2006) methodologies to estimate the potential soil carbon sequestration due to conversion from burned to green harvested areas, the estimates indicate a supplementary potential sequestration of 6.2 Mt CO2 for the estimated period.
