ABSTRACT: During the austral spring, masses of ozone-poor air can break off the Antarctic Ozone Hole and reach mid-latitudes in a phenomenon known as "secondary effect of the Antarctic Ozone Hole". The proof of the occurrence of this phenomenon at the South of Brazil on September 29, 2009, was made by measurements of ozone total column obtained by OMI Spectrometer for the coordinates of the Southern Space Observatory (29.42 ° S, 53.87 ° O), in São Martinho da Serra, RS, as well as maps of stratospheric potential vorticity on isentropic surfaces and retroactive trajectories of air masses using the HYSPLIT model of NOAA. These data proved the polar origin of air mass over Southern Space Observatory. The tropospheric synoptic analysis was performed using the average daily wind fields at 250 hPa and Omega at 500 hPa, vertical section of potential temperature and wind to 54°W, sea level pressure, thickness between 1000 and 500 hPa and GOES 10 satellite image highlighted, noting that the event of a fall in ozone content occurred after the passage of a frontal system over southern Brazil, where the position of the polar jet stream provided the occurrence of an event of breakage the tropopause region which induced an intense subsidence favoring the intrusion of stratospheric air into the troposphere and transport of stratospheric air masses from the polar region towards the south of Brazil. |
