ResumoSatellite images are recognized as a data source for the monitoring of inland waters. Amazon Rivers have a seasonal dynamic influenced by the Amazon flood pulse. In this context, WFI/CBERS-4 sensor benefits the observation of Amazon due to high frequency acquisition (5 days) and wide swath (866 km) that contributes to overcome limitations of high cloud cover and large areas. In this paper, our objective is to investigate the seasonal water-leaving reflectance from WFI images over Japura and Solimões rivers. The results show seasonal water color variability between upstream, downstream of Japurá river and at its confluence with Solimões river. The existence of channel connecting Solimões and Japurá during high water levels (February to August) is responsible for a large input of sediments into Japurá river. At low water levels, optical properties of Japura river becomes more similar to those of floodplain lakes and rias, characterized by low concentration of inorganic suspended particles. Therefore, WFI images proved to be useful for the study of Amazon aquatic systems, specially, where wide swath observation and high temporal resolution are required to record water color dynamics.

ResumoConservation of Melanosuchus niger species is commonly based on protecting nesting sites, where the two most vulnerable life stages, neonates and reproductive females, remain for a considerable time. In large areas with difficult access from the ground, such as the Amazon basin, it is extremely demanding to identify nests using only field-based methods. Remote sensing can be an alternative for deriving environmental variables related to caiman nesting sites. However, only a few studies have been conducted using this technology for M. niger habitat mapping within the Amazon basin. Based on previous results and new hypotheses, we selected the following environmental variables for predicting nesting site occurrence of M. niger using Maxent: vertical and horizontal distances from water body at low and high water seasons, and horizontal distance from forest and non-forest. Additionally, to predicting occurrence, model outputs allowed for quantifying the relative contribution of these environmental variables. Results showed that, on average, females select nesting sites on the basis of horizontal distance from water body during the high water season. Predictions reveal that nests are associated to small water bodies, whose margins are humid owing to the high water table.

ResumoThe aim of this research was to monitor the amount of solar energy absorbed by chlorophyll at branch scale during the dry season, in a central eastern Amazonian evergreen forest, and verify how broadband and narrowband vegetation indices, as well as canopy fractions can be used for monitoring the absorption of energy by chlorophyll at the species level. Seventeen hyperspectral images (385-1050 nm, ~ 4 nm spectral resolution), which were acquired from a tower-mounted camera (late July to late September, 2012), were used in this study. Seven vegetation indices, three canopy fractions (green vegetation, GV, non-photosynthetic vegetation, NPV, and shade fractions), and the depth of the chlorophyll absorption band, were calculated for three tree species in the camera image: Chamaecrista xinguensis (CHXI), Erisma uncinatum (ERUN) and Manilkara huberi (MAHU). Each individual (and species) displays a distinct phenological behavior, and ERUN has the highest values and the lowest variation of chlorophyll absorption band depth during the studied period. Our results show that the dry season changes in chlorophyll absorption band depth are not correlated with the shade fraction; instead, it can be explained by the dry season variations in GV and NPV, as well as by three vegetation indices: Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), Enhanced Vegetation Index (EVI) and Plant Senescence Reflectance Index (PSRI). Although NDVI and EVI are more consistent during the time, only NDVI and PSRI are correlated with the absorption of the electromagnetic energy by chlorophyll within the studied crowns (and species).

ResumoThe southwest Amazon forests are dominated of bamboo species of the genus Guadua and cover about 161,500 km2. These individuals have a life cycle of about 28 years and present only one reproductive event followed by their death. This process accumulates dry biomass in the forest and increases the probability of fire occurrence. Since extreme drought events increase fire vulnerability, and this region has been affected by some of these events in the last decades, it is possible that bamboos are related to a higher occurrence of forest fires. In this sense, the objective of the present study was to evaluate the detection of bamboo mortality in southwest Amazon forests using MODIS (MAIAC) data, spectral mixture modeling and CART decision tree. The combined use of band 5 (medium infrared) and GV fraction allowed the detection of bamboo mortality with 56% accuracy. The bamboo life stages can be differentiated because of different spectral patterns, especially on the near and medium infrared wavelengths, and distinct intra-annual seasonality patterns from non-bamboo forest. It was possible to map the bamboo-dominated forests, including bamboo life stages, and non-bamboo-dominated forests with 76% accuracy. The mortality detected in this study may have been influenced by the occurrence of fire.

ResumoThis paper describes an experiment carried out to assess the suitability of remote sensing for mapping the spatial distribution of suspended sediment concentration (SSC) at the lower reach of the Madeira River. For that, we have applied a Landsat 5/TM database and an empirical model previously calibrated. The experiment consisted of processing a time series composed of 5 images distributed along the hydrological year of 2011, starting in the dry period of 2010 and ending in the dry period of 2011, representing key phases of the flood-pulse. The results showed that it was possible: a) to assess time changes in SSC at the lower Madeira River along the different phases of the hydrological year using the time series of Landsat-5/TM images. b) to map the spatial distribution of the SSC, provided that the following aspects are taking into account: i) presence of scan line noise related to the poor signal-to-noise ratio provided by TM sensor, mainly in phases of low SSC; ii) presence of artifacts related to cloud shading and coverage; iii) model application limited to aquatic systems characterized by optical properties controlled by suspended inorganic solids at certain phases of the hydrological year. c) Although the model used to map SSC distribution on floodplain lakes has been calibrated using water samples from the Madeira river channel, its application to floodplain lakes provided suitable results in those phases of hydrological year during which the water entering in the floodplain is dominated by inorganic particles.

ResumoThe classification of marine biogeochemical provinces (PBGQ) provides a useful framework for understanding the mechanisms of interaction and control of physical, chemical and biological processes that reflect the heterogeneity of the oceanic environment in different locations on the planet. Studies focused on the variability of the Atlantic Ocean in recent years, has been an important issue for the understanding of processes and phenomena that impact directly on society. Thus, the objective of this work consists in partitioning the South Atlantic Ocean in PBGQ through an unsupervised cluster method named Fuzzy C-Means (FCM), using remote sensing, modelling and in situ data in the period from 2006 to 2015. Through the Silhouette criterion, 9 clusters were suggested as input number to FCM algorithm where the elements were better represented in their respective groups. The obtained partition of South Atlantic Ocean is related to the presence of oceanographic features and processes and with the associated variables here used for their delimitation, specially sea surface temperature, mixed layer depth and chlorophyll-a concentration.

ResumoThe spatial variability of soil and plant properties has been a concern of researchers, since the variation of any phenomenon in space or time, whether caused by natural processes or by man-imposed actions, has always existed and need considered. The objective was relate spatial variability of chemical attributes, including carbon and nitrogen, to pasture and sugarcane areas in the west of the state of São Paulo. A total of 36 points were sampled in the west of the state of São Paulo in areas of pasture and sugar cane. For each point were collected soil chemical data at depth of 0 cm to 30 cm in March 2015. For identification of spatial dependence, data interpolation and for the elaboration of the maps, the geostatistical analysis was used including adjustment of the semivariogram. To relate the maps of soil chemical attributes interpolated by geostatistical and kriging with grazing and sugarcane areas, the land use map was obtained. There was spatial dependence for the chemical attributes analyzed and the ranges of values showed soil-related variability. The highest values of nutrients, carbon and nitrogen in the areas of sugarcane production, evidencing the positive effect of crop management on the soil when compared to pasture areas.

ResumoSynthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) is an active, all-day and all-weather, high-resolution microwave sensor able to measure the electromagnetic field backscattered off the observed scene. Antarctic environment presents very hard imaging conditions for optical imagery, and sometimes they are challenging even for SAR observations. However, full-polarimetric (FP) SAR features can provide useful information for characterizing man-made targets in different types of ice. This study aims at exploiting polarimetric features extracted from compact-polarimetric (CP) SAR architectures, e. g., circular transmitting/linear receiving (CTLR) and linear transmitting/linear receiving (LTLR), that have been shown to be operationally attractive due to the doubled area coverage they offer with respect to FP SAR architectures. CP SAR data are here emulated using actual FP SAR measurements to both detect the dominant scattering mechanism that characterizes man-made targets, and classify them accordingly. As a study case, an aircraft crashed on November 2014 off the Chilean military base area in the western of King George Island (Antarctica) and actually placed close to the gravel airstrip, is considered. At all, three Radarsat-2 FPSAR data were acquired over the test site. In this study, as first results, a single SAR acquisition was explored due to the availability of ground truth relevant to the crashed aircraft and other airdrome structures position. The achieved preliminary results have encouraged future work that will deal with the exploration of different responses from a wide range of inland and sea ice.

ResumoOver the past four decades, the Cerrado (Brazilian Savanna) has suffered a land use cover change process that transformed sparsely populated areas in major agricultural production centers. The region known as MATOPIBA, which is formed by the Brazilian state of Tocantins and some parts of the states of Maranhão, Piauí and Bahia, has 91% of its area in the biome Cerrado. It current represents the latest agricultural frontier in Brazil, an area of agriculture expansion and intensification, mainly focused in grains production. The agricultural activity has expanded quickly in MATOPIBA, but 72% of this native vegetation is still preserved. Because of the economic and environmental importance of this region, it is essential to monitor its agricultural areas. In this context, the main goal of this paper was to map the expansion of annual crops in MATOPIBA region, between July 2002 and June 2015 (thirteen crop years). A methodology based on NDVI/MODIS time series analysis and decision tree classifier was applied in order to map crop areas using the Google Earth Engine. The results shown the dynamics of crop areas in MATOPIBA and highlighted the rapid process of expansion between 2002 and 2015, reaching an expansion rate of 130% in this period. Using Google Earth Engine cloud computing platform it took about two hours to perform automatic crop mapping of thirteen crop years by the complete processing (gap filling, filtering/smoothing, feature extraction and classification) of 1196 NDVI/MODIS-250m images (tiles) covering the Cerrado portion of MATOPIBA region, which extends over 665.000 km2.
