ABSTRACT: The Weather Research and Forecast (WRF) mesoscale model sensibility was tested in a (high) resolution of 1 km and a frequency of one hour in the region of the Southern Ocean close to the Deception Island, for atmospheric pressure, temperature and wind speed during the period from 11 to 21 February 2011. The results of the simulations obtained for the study period were also compared to data collected in situ during the 29th Brazilian Antarctic Operation. The atmospheric pressure was the variable best represented by the model with a correlation of 0.98 and a light overestimation of about 1 hPa. The temperature presented a correlation of 0.67 and an average underestimation of 1.1 0C. For the wind speed, the correlation was 0.69 and the average values were underestimated by 3.1 m/s.

ABSTRACT: The relationship between the heat fluxes in the ocean-atmosphere interface, the water masses distribution e the phytoplankton composition was determined based on data collected during the ACEx/SIMTECO cruise, which was realized along the southern Brazilian coast. A marked spatial variability was observed in the region, straightly related with the distribution of the water masses within the region. Throughout the region it was observed heat lose from the ocean to the atmosphere, and th highest values were associated with the presence of tropical waters, which presented low phytoplankton biomass, dominated by cyanobacteria and prochlorophytes. On the other hand, coastal waters under the influence of the Río de La Plata plume exhibited less intense heat fluxes with greater phytoplankton biomass, which was dominated by diatoms, with contributions of prasinophytes and dinoflagellates. Despite the CO2 data have not been analyzed yet, the region can exert great importance on the oceans CO2 absorption, due to high biomass found in towards the coast.

ABSTRACT: This paper presents estimates of latent heat fluxes (Hl) and sensitive (Hs) in the southern Brazilian continental shelf and slope in the region between the latitudes of the localities of Paranaguá (PR) and Chui (RS). Meteorological and oceanographic data were collected in situ by five transects perpendicular to the southern Brazilian coast aboard the NHOc. Cruzeiro do Sul between 11 and 21 june 2012. The results show that over areas of deep ocean water masses dominated carried by the Brazil Current (BC) there is a higher HI and Hs from the ocean to the atmosphere, resulting in a higher power transmission. In coastal areas, dominated by winter water masses carried by the Brazil Coastal Current (BCC) the heat fluxes are smaller. This behavior of gradient heat fluxes along zonal sections of the southern Brazilian coast occurs in every area of study, with the exception of transect perpendicular to the city of Araranguá (SC), where the incidence of a transient atmospheric system may have caused the reduction HI in the deepest regions of the ocean.

ABSTRACT: The main objective of this project is to study the interactions between the ocean, the coastal zone and the atmosphere in micro scale at the Deception Island, South Shetland Archipelago, Antarctica. Innovative, Brazilian made instrumentation is going to be used for the first time in Antarctica. Together with some experts in Antarctic Science, a new group of scientists with known expertise in coastal oceanography and meteorology are presenting this proposal. In order to fulfill the main objective of this project, we have drawn some specific objectives that include: to describe the synoptic coupling between the atmospheres and the oceans boundary layers at the study area and to describe the temporal variability of physical variables like air and sea water temperature, winds, atmospheric pressure, precipitation, relative humidity, and radiative fluxes by using a meteo-oceanographic buoy to be moored in shallow waters inside Port Foster.
