Resumo | Until very recently climate protection and energy security have been viewed as largely contradictory or separate matters. This scenario has changed in response to the ever-increasing energy demand in developing economies such as Brazil, China and India. In order to ensure a stable climate in a global sustainable development, while providing means for the improvement in our standards of life, we must make responsible decisions about our energy sources while searching for solutions to reduce the dependence on the fossil fuels in our energy matrix. Industrialized countries are responsible for the greenhouse gases, such as carbon dioxide (CO2), that have built up in the atmosphere since the beginning of the industrial era. Nonetheless, a worldwide effort is now necessary to reverse or, at least, reduce their effects on climate and prevent future damage to the environment. Although no single solution can meet our society's future energy needs and, at the same time, reduce the buildup of CO2 and other greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, some practical measures are possible. For example, the gradual but permanent substitution of fossil energy by renewable energy sources for electricity generation, such as wind, solar, geothermal, and bioenergy. To achieve this goal we must increase confidence on renewable energy by reducing barriers to the adoption of renewable technologies, encouraging investors, venture capital firms, independent power producers, and government purchasers of energy. This report represents a long-term Brazilian cooperative effort between the Electric Power Research Center (CEPEL), the National Institute for Space Research (INPE), and University of Santa Catarina (UFSC) to demonstrate the long-term potential for the large scale use of solar and wind energies in Brazil. It is one of the outputs of Project SWERA (Solar and Wind Energy Resource Assessment) for Brazil, which started in 2001 as a pilot project managed by the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP), co-financed by the Global Environment Facility (GEF), and has expanded in 2006 into a full program. Its mission is to provide high quality information in suitable formats on renewable energy resources for countries and regions around the world, along with the tools needed to apply these data in ways that facilitate renewable energy policies and investments. |
