ResumoThe first observations of UV (290-400 nm) ever made at an agro-meteorological/radiometric station located in the metropolitan region of Maceió (9280S, 35490W, 127 m), Northeast Brazil, during 2008 are reported in this work. Solar UV radiation variability in different time scales and its fractional composition in the global solar radiation (G), that is, FUV = UV/G is investigated under different sky conditions. The maximum daily UV solar irradiation (HdUV) was 0.85 MJ m2 and the annual average 0.55 MJ m2. It was noticed that the largest contribution to the annual variation of the daily totals of UV are attributed to cloudiness than seasonality. Under partially cloudy sky, multi reflection was responsible for an increase of 11.1 and 18.8% in the UV levels, relatively to clear days. FUV is inversely proportional to the global atmospheric transmittance (KT); the daily percentage variation of FUV was in the range of 2.33 to 2.95% in clear days and from 2.60 to 3.59% in cloudy days, with the annual daily average value of 2.8%. Linear empirical relations between the UV and G components for hourly and daily intervals under different KT intervals were established and recommended, with the coefficient of determination (R2) generally above 0.91.

ResumoThe controversy dubbed Climategate erupted in late 2009 exactly as diplomats around the world were preparing their positions for the negotiations at the especially high-profile 15th Conference of the Parties under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). This meeting was deemed by many commentators as especially crucial for the definition of an international agreement about post-2012 measures to limit emissions of greenhouse gases. The controversy concerned the leaking or stealing of thousands of private e-mails and documents sent and received by climate researchers at the Climatic Research Unit (CRU) at the University of East Anglia in the United Kingdom. The materials content provided a rare, uncensored glimpse into the fractious world of climate science, including frank conversations among scientific leaders of the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), the scientific body which evaluates the evidence of anthropogenic climate change to inform decision making under the UNFCCC. The e-mails discussed sensitive topics such as possible holes in key scientific evidence and expressions of the scientists desires and strategizing to avoid granting countervailing science scientific legitimacy, weight, and public visibility.

ResumoWe present the results of airborne measurements of carbon monoxide (CO) and aerosol particle number concentration (CN) made during the Balan double dagger o Atmosf, rico Regional de Carbono na Amazonia (BARCA) program. The primary goal of BARCA is to address the question of basin-scale sources and sinks of CO2 and other atmospheric carbon species, a central issue of the Large-scale Biosphere-Atmosphere (LBA) program. The experiment consisted of two aircraft campaigns during November-December 2008 (BARCA-A) and May-June 2009 (BARCA-B), which covered the altitude range from the surface up to about 4500 m, and spanned most of the Amazon Basin. Based on meteorological analysis and measurements of the tracer, SF6, we found that airmasses over the Amazon Basin during the late dry season (BARCA-A, November 2008) originated predominantly from the Southern Hemisphere, while during the late wet season (BARCA-B, May 2009) low-level airmasses were dominated by northern-hemispheric inflow and mid-tropospheric airmasses were of mixed origin. In BARCA-A we found strong influence of biomass burning emissions on the composition of the atmosphere over much of the Amazon Basin, with CO enhancements up to 300 ppb and CN concentrations approaching 10 000 cm(-3); the highest values were in the southern part of the Basin at altitudes of 1-3 km. The Delta CN/Delta CO ratios were diagnostic for biomass burning emissions, and were lower in aged than in fresh smoke. Fresh emissions indicated CO/CO2 and CN/CO emission ratios in good agreement with previous work, but our results also highlight the need to consider the residual smoldering combustion that takes place after the active flaming phase of deforestation fires. During the late wet season, in contrast, there was little evidence for a significant presence of biomass smoke. Low CN concentrations (300-500 cm(-3)) prevailed basinwide, and CO mixing ratios were enhanced by only similar to 10 ppb above the mixing line between Northern and Southern Hemisphere air. There was no detectable trend in CO with distance from the coast, but there was a small enhancement of CO in the boundary layer suggesting diffuse biogenic sources from photochemical degradation of biogenic volatile organic compounds or direct biological emission. Simulations of CO distributions during BARCA-A using a range of models yielded general agreement in spatial distribution and confirm the important contribution from biomass burning emissions, but the models evidence some systematic quantitative differences compared to observed CO concentrations. These mismatches appear to be related to problems with the accuracy of the global background fields, the role of vertical transport and biomass smoke injection height, the choice of model resolution, and reliability and temporal resolution of the emissions data base.

ResumoConsidering the high rates of evapotranspiration of Amazonian forests, understanding the impacts of deforestation on water loss rates is important for assessing those impacts on a regional and global scale. This paper quantifies evapotranspiration rates in two different pasture sites in Amazonia and evaluates the differences between the sites. In both places, measured evapotranspiration varies seasonally, decreasing during the dry season. The decrease is higher at the southwestern Amazonia site, while at the central Amazonia site, the decrease is less pronounced. During the dry season, average values of evapotranspiration are around 2.2±0.6 mm day −1 in central Amazonia and 2.4± 0.6 mm day −1 in southwestern Amazonia, while during the wet season, those values are 2.1±0.6 mm day −1 in central Amazonia and 3.5±0.8 mm day −1 in southwestern Amazonia. On an annual basis, the pasture in southwestern Amazonia has higher evapotranspiration than in central Amazonia. We conclude that the main reason for this difference is the lower available energy in the wet season at the central Amazonian site, combined with a lower leaf area index at this site during the whole year. Still, the evapotranspiration is significantly controlled by the vegetation, which is well coupled with the local moisture conditions in the dry season.

ResumoThree sections of the Asu catchment, which is located within the Cuieiras Reservation 80 km northwest of Manaus in Central Amazonia, Brazil, were gauged to create nested catchments of the first (0.95 km2), second (6.58 km2) and third (12.43 km2) Strahler orders. As the Cuieiras reserve contains pristine tropical rainforest, hydrological data collected in these catchments offers an opportunity to test the Distributed Hydrology Soil Vegetation Models (DHSVM) ability to simulate hydrological responses, and to represent the spatial distribution of hydrological phenomena such as evapotranspiration, soil moisture and water table depth. Digital Elevation Model (DEM) data were obtained from the Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM) data. We used a novel approach to produce high resolution (30 m) soil and vegetation maps that enabled a representative set of relevant parameters to be acquired. These soil and vegetation maps were derived from a hydrologically normalized DEM through the HAND (Height Above the Nearest Drainage) technique, a new type of terrain model procedure. The DHSVM model was calibrated and validated using the second order watershed. To test the models ability to represent processes at different spatial scales, the parameter set derived from the calibration was used to simulate the discharge of the first and third order streams. Model simulations of soil moisture, groundwater levels and discharge were compared with observed data and exhibited satisfactory performance overall, with the exceptions of the predicted water table depth and the underestimation of peak flows during the wet season. The results from these DHSVM runs indicate that the model is applicable to tropical forests environments (equatorial climates, lowland watersheds with deep soil), which are quite distinct from the environments for which the model was developed (temperate climates, mountainous watersheds with shallow soil). The study also demonstrated that the HAND terrain model is a useful tool for representing the spatial distributions of key hydrological parameters.

Rainfall
ResumoThis is an observational study of the large-scale moisture transport over South America, with some analyses on its relation to subtropical rainfall. The concept of aerial rivers is proposed as a framework: it is an analogy between the main pathways of moisture flow in the atmosphere and surface rivers. Opposite to surface rivers, aerial rivers gain (lose) water through evaporation (precipitation). The magnitude of the vertically integrated moisture transport is discharge, and precipitable water is like the mass of the liquid columnmultiplied by an equivalent speed it gives discharge. Trade wind flow into Amazonia, and the north/northwesterly flow to the subtropics, east of the Andes, are aerial rivers. Aerial lakes are the sections of a moisture pathway where the flow slows down and broadens, because of diffluence, and becomes deeper, with higher precipitable water. This is the case over Amazonia, downstream of the trade wind confluence. In the dry season, moisture from the aerial lake is transported northeastward, but weaker flow over southern Amazonia heads southward toward the subtropics. Southern Amazonia appears as a source of moisture to this flow. Aerial river discharge to the subtropics is comparable to that of the Amazon River. The variations of the amount of moisture coming from Amazonia have an important effect over the variability of discharge. Correlations between the flow from Amazonia and subtropical rainfall are not strong. However, some months within the set of dry seasons observed showed a strong increase (decrease) occurring together with an important increase (decrease) in subtropical rainfall.

ResumoTropical regions, especially the Amazon region, account for large emissions of methane (CH 4). Here, we present CH 4 observations from two airborne campaigns conducted within the BARCA (Balano Atmosférico Regional de Carbono na Amaznia) project in the Amazon basin in November 2008 (end of the dry season) and May 2009 (end of the wet season). We performed continuous measurements of CH 4 onboard an aircraft for the first time in the Amazon region, covering the whole Amazon basin with over 150 vertical profiles between altitudes of 500 m and 4000 m. The observations support the finding of previous ground-based, airborne, and satellite measurements that the Amazon basin is a large source of atmospheric CH 4. Isotope analysis verified that the majority of emissions can be attributed to CH 4 emissions from wetlands, while urban CH 4 emissions could be also traced back to biogenic origin. A comparison of five TM5 based global CH 4 inversions with the observations clearly indicates that the inversions using SCIAMACHY observations represent the BARCA observations best. The calculated CH 4 flux estimate obtained from the mismatch between observations and TM5-modeled CH 4 fields ranges from 36 to 43 mg m -2 d -1 for the Amazon lowland region.
