ResumoIn this paper, we present the design of a fully digital binary phase shift keying demodulator for application in satellite high-rate suppressed carrier telecommand system. The proposed system digitalizes the received signal in the intermediate frequency stage using bandpass sampling technique, and the resulting baseband signal is used to synchronization of symbol and phase and to bit detection. The design of all functional modules is presented in details. Another innovation presented in this work is the inclusion of a non-linearity in the phase synchronizer module to permit its operation independent from the signal amplitude. Moreover, aiming the characterization and performance evaluation of the system, we do some original mathematical analyses. Finally, test results show that the demodulator complies all the project requirements, and the prototype implementation loss, in terms of bit energy to noise power density ratio, is less than 0.3 dB.

ResumoThe study shows changes on physical and chemical water parameters and of trophic state in a large reservoir in the Brazilian semiarid region following decreasing reservoir volume due to rainfall shortage during four consecutive years. The monitoring period, between November 2011 and May 2014, assessed approximately 50% water volume reduction and 10 meters' decrease of reservoir water level that degraded water quality. Decrease in reservoir volume, strong evaporation and the permanent influence of anthropogenic activities, favored the concentration of salts and accumulation of nutrients and of increasing pH. Thermal stratification of the water column occurred when volume was maximum and lead to a significant reduction in dissolved oxygen in the hypolimnion (0.07 to 2.62 mg L-1). Diminishing volume resulted in mixing of the hypolimnion nutrient-rich and oxygen-poor waters in the entre water column and changed the initial oligotrophic condition to eutrophic. However, the temporal scale of the response of the reservoir's trophic state differs in the different areas of the reservoir. Whereas deeper areas accumulating nutrients from aquaculture and agriculture progressively became mesotrophic and eventually eutrophic; shallower regions far from direct anthropogenic influences, changed their trophic sate much later, but rapidly turned into super-eutrophic conditions, probably due to more intense sediment resuspension and water mixing. Trophic State Index followed nutrient increase during most of the period. However, it also responded to an increase in chlorophyll a concentrations when the reservoir achieved its minimum volume, in particular in the shallower areas. The results suggest that this type of reservoir systems are vulnerable to eutrophication during extended drought periods and that a better assessment of the maximum support capacity for reservoir activities, particularly aquaculture, must be re-assessed taking into consideration worst case scenarios forecasted by global climate change.

ResumoThis paper presents 23 years (1992-2014) of quasi-continuous measurements of the total ozone column (TOC) over the Southern Space Observatory (SSO) in Saõ Martinho da Serra, Brazil (29.26° S, 53.48° and 488 m altitude). The TOC was measured by a Brewer spectrometer, and the results are also compared to daily and monthly observations from the TOMS (Total Ozone Mapping Spectrometer) and OMI (Ozone Monitoring Instrument) satellite instruments. Analyses of the main interannual modes of variability computed using the wavelet transform method were performed. A favorable agreement between the Brewer spectrophotometer and satellite datasets was found. The seasonal TOC variation is dominated by an annual cycle, with a minimum of approximately 260 DU in April and a maximum of approximately 295 DU in September. The wavelet analysis applied in the SSO TOC anomaly time series revealed that the Quasi-Biennial Oscillation (QBO) modulation was the main mode of interannual variability. The comparison between the SSO TOC anomaly time series with the QBO index revealed that the two are in opposite phases.

ResumoElectrochemical concentration cell ozonesonde measurements are an important source of highly resolved vertical profiles of ozone (O-3) with long-term data records for deriving O-3 trends, model development, satellite validation, and air quality studies. Ozonesonde stations employ a range of operational and data processing procedures, metadata reporting, and instrument changes that have resulted in inhomogeneities within individual station data records. A major milestone is the first reprocessing of seven Southern Hemisphere ADditional OZonesondes (SHADOZ) station ozonesonde records to account for errors and biases in operating/processing procedures. Ascension Island, Hanoi, Irene, Kuala Lumpur, La Reunion, Natal, and Watukosek station records all show an overall increase in O-3 after reprocessing. Watukosek shows the largest increase of 9.02.1 Dobson Units (DU) in total column O-3; Irene and Hanoi show a 5.52.5 DU increase, while remaining sites show statistically insignificant enhancements. Negligible to modest O-3 enhancements are observed after reprocessing in the troposphere (up to 8%) and stratosphere (up to 6%), except at La Reunion for which the application of background currents reduces tropospheric O-3 (-2.11.3 DU). Inhomogeneities due to ozonesonde/solution-type changes at Ascension, Natal, and La Reunion are resolved with the application of transfer functions. Comparisons with EP-TOMS, Aura's Ozone Monitoring Instrument and Microwave Limb Sounder (MLS) satellite O-3 overpasses show an overall improvement in agreement after reprocessing. Most reprocessed data sets show a significant reduction in biases with MLS at the ozone maximum region (50-10hPa). Changes in radiosonde/ozonesonde system and nonstandard solution types can account for remaining discrepancies observed at several sites when compared to satellites. Plain Language Summary Ozonesondes are point-source balloon-borne instruments that measure profiles of ozone, pressure, temperature, and relative humidity from the surface up to 10hPa (similar to 30 km). Long-term ozonesonde data records are relied upon to validate model output and satellite retrievals of ozone, as well as validate their trend calculations. Thus, it is important to have confidence in the quality and accuracy of sonde observations. One way to ensure high quality in the ozonesonde measurement system is to follow the consensus-based operating procedures and reprocessing guidelines established by ozonesonde experts from around the world. These procedures and guidelines have been adopted by the SHADOZ (Southern Hemisphere ADditional OZonesondes) network. SHADOZ is a NASA/GSFC project in close collaboration with NOAA and other international partners to archive tropical and sub-tropical ozonesonde data. Since the network started in 1998, 14 stations located north and south of the tropics have archived over 6000 profiles. Like many long-term observational networks, SHADOZ is characterized by heterogeneous operating procedures, ozonesonde systems, and postprocessing software that impact validation and trend derivation assessments. Reprocessing the SHADOZ ozonesonde data records has led to homogenized data sets that now allow for meaningful comparisons across the network.
