ray tracing
atmospheric gravity waver
AbstractMedium-scale gravity waves (MSGWs) observed during the Conjugate Point Experiment (COPEX) at Boa Vista (2.8°N; 60.7°S, dip angle 21.7°) have been ray-traced and studied based on zero wind and model wind conditions. Wind profiles have been used from the TIE-GCM and HWM-07 models. Temperature profiles were used from the NRLMSISE-00 and TIE-GCM models, and TIMED/SABER satellite data. Doppler up-shifted MSGWs, at ~87 km of altitude, propagated to higher altitudes into the thermosphereionosphere domain than waves that were un-shifted. Most MSGWs propagated upwards up to ~140 km of altitude and were seen to be unlikely candidates to trigger equatorial plasma bubbles (EPBs) at the F layer bottom side. However, three of them propagated up to heights close to the F layer bottom side, where it could act in the EPB seeding directly. Moreover, three MSGWs, which propagated equatorward, could act on EPB seeding by field-line-integrated effects.

Reviewer #3: The authors have well revised the previously submitted manuscript. This paper is
almost ready for publication. However, please consider the following minor comments
before its publication.

p5-6
In equation (1) and (2), the authors use Pr (Prandtl number).
Please show the value used in the calculations.
This may be important for describing the feature of turbulence
in the MLT region.

p9 line 3
"(HWM-07 Drob et al)"
The publication year should be included. In the reference list
I cannot find out the year.

p9 line 11
"SABER temperature profile" -->"SABER temperature profiles"

p12 line 8
It seems to be better to add Hedin et al. (1996) to the
references of HWM-93.

In Acknowledgment, HWM-07 should be added in the same way
as HWM-93 and TIE-GCM.

AbstractUsing magnetometer data acquired by geosynchronous satellite and all-sky images from a ground optical station in the conjugate area, we show propagation of aurora surge repeating in a thin and narrow aurora arc at the poleward boundary of the aurora zone. The surge repetition correlated with the Pi2s at the geosynchronous altitudes. One-to-one conjunctions of the surge and Pi2 pulse were not always observed. The westward or eastward propagation directions of the surge corresponded to the clockwise or counterclockwise wave polarizations in the equatorial plane. Propagation velocities of the poleward surge were in the range of 0.20.51/s or 1230 km/s at 100 km altitudes. We discuss the propagating surge at poleward boundary in conjunction with bi-directional flows in the first 10 min intervals of Pi2 onset that were inferred by Saka et al. (2010) from the Pi2 epoch analyses of magnetometer data at geosynchronous altitudes.

Intra-seasonal oscillation ISO
AbstractSystematic measurement of the tropical intraseasonal oscillation (ISO) has been carried out with radiosonde, TIMED Doppler Interferometer, European Center for Medium Range Weather Forecasting zonal wind data as well as Outgoing Longwave Radiation (OLR) data over Gadanki (13.5°N, 79.2°E). There is an emphatic signature of ISO modulation by dominant annual oscillation in the lower troposphere and upper stratosphere. Periodogram analysis has revealed dominant oscillations in the periodicity range 20-100 days. ISO amplitudes are significantly higher in Mesosphere and Lower Thermosphere (MLT) in comparison with the Troposphere and Stratosphere. ISO activity is found to be intermittent in the troposphere and consistent in MLT. Signature of the ISO is found to be insignificant in the stratosphere. Normally, there is good correlation between convection and zonal wind during all seasons within ISO scale of variability. Also mean latitudinal and longitudinal ISO amplitudes in OLR show common pattern of variability with higher activity during winter over summer during certain times, which is affirmed by ECMWF filtered wind results. These findings indicate presence of some complex mechanisms which alter the direct impact of convection on the tropical ISO during certain time.

AbstractIn this study, ground-based observations of equinox diurnal tide wind fields from the first CAWSES Global Tidal Campaign are compared with results from five commonly used models, in order to identify systematic differences. WACCM3 and Extended CMAM are both self-consistent general circulation models, which resolve general climatological features, while TIME-GCM can be forced to approximate specific conditions using reanalysis fields. GSWM is a linear mechanistic model; while GEWM is an empirical model derived from ground-based and satellite observations. The models resolve diurnal tides consistent in latitudinal structure with observations, dominated by the upward propagating (1,1) mode. There is disagreement in the magnitudes of the tidal amplitudes and vertical wavelengths, while differences in longitudinal tidal variability indicate differences in the nonmigrating tides in the models. These points suggest inconsistencies in model forcing, dissipation, and background winds that must be examined as part of a coordinated effort from the modeling community.

AbstractPlanetary scale 2-day waves in the mesospherelower thermosphere winds have been observed mainly from January to February in the southern hemisphere low latitude region. Meteor radar wind measurements at Cariri (7.41S, 36.51W) from the year 2005 to 2007 showed a distinct 2-day oscillation in the meridional winds with the amplitude of 5080 m/s and 2030 m/s for the zonal winds. During the same period, the ionospheric F-layer maximum critical frequency (foF2) observed at Fortaleza (3.81S, 38.61W) also showed distinct 2-day oscillation, indicating influence of planetary 2-day wave in the ionosphere. On the other hand, no clear signature of 2-day oscillation was observed for the F-layer bottom-side virtual height (hF). Present results suggest that the 2-day wave induced meridional wind in the thermosphere could generate latitudinal transport of F-region plasma causing day to day variability of equatorial ionization anomaly (EIA).

sudden stratospheric warming
AbstractMeteor radar observations at São João do Cariri (7.4°S, 36.5°W), Cachoeira Paulista (23°S, 45°W) and Santa Maria (29.7°S, 53.7°W) have permitted estimates to be made of winds and temperature in the mesosphere and lower thermosphere (MLT). Using horizontal winds the lunar semidiurnal tide was determined from January 2005 to December 2008 for these three sites. In January 2006 an unusual enhancement was observed in the lunartide amplitude at these stations, for meridional and zonal components. During this period, sudden stratospheric warming (SSW) events were observed in the northern hemisphere. Meridional and zonal winds observed in Brazil showed evidence of SSW effects in the MLTregion. Moreover, the mesospheric temperatures at Cachoeira Paulista and Santa Maria presented cooling and a semimonthly oscillation, which followed the newfullnew moon phases. These results suggest that the enhancement of the lunartide could be a response for the SSW in the MLT.

AbstractCycle 23 was exceptional in that it lasted almost two years longer than its predecessors and in that it ended in an extended minimum period that proved all predictions wrong. Comparisons of the International Reference Ionosphere (IRI) with CHAMP and GRACE in-situ measurements of electron density during the minimum have revealed significant discrepancies at 400-500km altitude (Luehr and Xiong, 2010). Our study investigates the causes for these discrepancies with the help of ionosonde and Planar Langmuir Probe (PLP) data from the Communications/Navigation Outage Forecasting System (C/NOFS) satellite. Our C/NOFS comparisons confirm the earlier CHAMP and GRACE results. But the ionosonde measurements of the F-peak plasma frequency (foF2) show generally good agreement throughout the whole solar cycle. At mid-latitude stations yearly averages of the data-model difference are within 10% and at low latitudes stations within 20%. The 60-70% differences found at 400km to 500km altitude are not seen at the F peak. We will discuss how these seemingly contradicting results from the ionosonde and insitu data-model comparisons can be explained and which parameters need to be corrected in the IRI model.

AbstractRadar observations of nighttime irregular structures in the equatorial upper-E-valley region are presented. These structures are observed strictly during occurrences of an ascending irregular bottomtype or bottomside F layer, during or prior to the appearance of a high-rising F region plume and a momentarily intensification of E-region irregularities. The slope and the altitude coverage of these structures are proportional to the ascending rate of the irregular bottomtype/bottomside F layer and the altitude coverage of the plume respectively. These structures are found to consist of substructures separated in times suggesting the presence of quasi-periodic striations within these irregular structures. On the basis of occurrence statistics during October 2001-December 2008, the occurrence rate of these structures is found to be 3.5%, indicating the nature of rare occurrence of these structures over Soa Luis. Moreover, their occurrence remains confined to the maximum solar-flux period (2001-2003) and to the summer months (October-January). The presence of these structures is a manifestation of the vertical coupling of E and F regions owing to the ambient electric fields of the ionosphere and the fringe-field associated with the F region plume. AbstractUsing data from a meteor radar at Cachoeira Paulista (22.7°S; 45.0°W), the atmospheric lunar semidiurnal tide in the mesosphere and lower thermosphere was studied from January 2000 to October 2008. Monthly tidal amplitudes and phases were estimated using hourly mean winds in seven layers of 4 km thickness each. Several amplitude and phase profiles of the lunar semidiurnal tide over Cachoeira Paulista showed characteristics of vertically propagating waves. The mean amplitudes over all heights were greater in the northward wind in January, February, May, June, July, August, November and December, but taken into account the error bars this behavior can be different in certain months. The mean phases presented characteristics appropriate to the Southern Hemisphere throughout the year, except in July. In some aspects, the results presented similarities with the atmospheric lunar semidiurnal tidal model.
