ResumoLand cover maps at different resolutions and mapping extents contribute to modeling and support decision making processes. Because land cover affects and is affected by climate change, it is listed among the 13 terrestrial essential climate variables. This paper describes the generation of a land cover map for Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) for the year 2008. It was developed in the framework of the project Latin American Network for Monitoring and Studying of Natural Resources (SERENA), which has been developed within the GOFC-GOLD Latin American network of remote sensing and forest fires (RedLaTIF). The SERENA land cover map for LAC integrates: 1) the local expertise of SERENA network members to generate the training and validation data, 2) a methodology for land cover mapping based on decision trees using MODIS time series, and 3) class membership estimates to account for pixel heterogeneity issues. The discrete SERENA land cover product, derived from class memberships, yields an overall accuracy of 84% and includes an additional layer representing the estimated per-pixel confidence. The study demonstrates in detail the use of class memberships to better estimate the area of scarce classes with a scattered spatial distribution. The land cover map is already available as a printed wall map and will be released in digital format in the near future. The SERENA land cover map was produced with a legend and classification strategy similar to that used by the North American Land Change Monitoring System (NALCMS) to generate a land cover map of the North American continent, that will allow to combine both maps to generate consistent data across America facilitating continental monitoring and modeling.

Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM)
MSG/SEVIRI infrared multichannel
ResumoThis work analyses the capability of utilizing cloud-top multispectral radiation to extract information about the vertical reflectivity profile of clouds. Reflectivity profiles and cloud type classification were collected using the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) 2A25 algorithm and brightness temperature multispectral channels (3.9, 6.2, 8.7, 10.8, and 12 μm) from the Spinning Enhanced Visible and Infrared Imager (SEVIRI) aboard the Meteosat Second Generation (MSG) satellite. The analysis was performed on four cloud types: convective, warm, and stratiform with and without bright band, using a four-channel combination (10.83.9, 6.210.8, 8.710.8, and 10.812.0 μm). The study was applied over Tropical Africa at the MSG subsatellite point, in August 2006. Sixteen individual profile types were detected: three warm, four convective, three stratiform without bright band, and six stratiform with bright band. These cloud profile types were examined using cloud-top multichannel brightness temperature differences. The channel combination results demonstrated that the information obtained from cloud-top radiation enables us to detect specific individual characteristics within the cloud reflectivity profile. The channel combinations employed in this study were effective in identifying warm and cold cloud types. In the 10.83.9 and 8.710.8 μ m channels, brightness temperature differences were indicated in the detection of warm clouds, while the 6.210.8 μm channel was noted to be very efficient in classifying cold clouds. Cold clouds types were much more difficult to classify because they possess a similar multichannel signature, which caused ambiguity in the classification. In order to reduce this uncertainty, it was necessary to use texture information (space variability) to acquire a clearer distinction between different cloud types. The survey analysis showed good performance in classifying cloud types, with an accuracy of about 77.4% and 73.5% for night and day, respectively.

SSM/I–SSMI/S Sensors
ResumoGlobal monthly rainfall estimates and other hydrological products have been produced from 1987 to the present using measurements from the Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP) series of the Special Sensor Microwave Imager (SSM/I). The aim of this paper is twofold: to present the recent efforts to improve the quality control (QC) of historical antenna temperature of the SSM/I sensor (19872008) and how this improvement impacts the different hydrological products that are generated at NOAA/National Environmental Satellite, Data, and Information Service (NESDIS). Beginning in 2005, the DMSP Special Sensor Microwave Imager/Sounder (SSMI/S) has been successfully operating on the F-16, F-17, and F-18 satellites. The second objective of this paper is focused on the application of SSMI/S channels to evaluate the performance of several hydrological products using the heritage of existing SSM/I algorithms and to develop an improved strategy to extend the SSM/I time series into the SSMI/S era, starting with data in 2009 for F-17. The continuity of hydrological products from SSM/I to SSMI/S has shown to be a valuable contribution for the precipitation and climate monitoring community but several sensor issues must be accounted for to meet this objective.
