AbstractDue to the increasing demand for ships carrying containers, the Berth Allocation Problem (BAP) can be considered as a major optimization problem in marine terminals. In this context, we propose a heuristic to solve a continuous case of the BAP. This heuristic is based on the application of the Clustering Search (CS) method with the Simulated Annealing (SA) metaheuristic. The results obtained by CS are compared to other methods found in the literature and its competitiveness is verified.

AbstractTechnologies used to link the end-user to a telecommunication infrastructure have been growing over time because of the consolidation of new access technologies. Moreover, the arrival of new tools for information dissemination, such as interactive digital TV, creates a bidirectional element, capable of connecting the end-user to telecommunications networks through access technologies such as worldwide interoperability for microwave access, 3G, asymmetric digital subscriber line and power line communication. This study presents a heuristic based on multicriteria analysis for selection of first mile access in the integrated services digital broadcasting terrestrial standard, ensuring quality of service, using a videoconferencing application as an example. The following analytical approaches, with multicriteria analysis, are presented towards decision making for televisions connected to more than one return channel: (a) fuzzy AHP for defining the criteria weights (delay, jitter, throughput, packet loss etc.); (b) technique for order preference by similarity to ideal solution (TOPSIS) method, for approximation, guided by measurements taken in real scenarios; (c) elimination and choice translating reality III method, used to ranking the alternatives and comparing with TOPSIS.

AbstractThroughout history, challenging practical problems act as a driving force that push forward theoretical development and even foster the establishment of new research areas. This is exactly the case related to the dynamical system theory. This theory appears as a outgrowth of the remarkable work of Poincaré in trying to find out whether our Solar System is stable or not. To make this problem more mathematically tractable, he considered a special case in which two massive particles, the primaries, move in circular orbits around their center of mass, while another particle with a smaller mass moves in the plane of the primaries so that it suffers their gravitational influence but its presence does not disturb the motion of the primaries. This is the so called circular restricted three-body problem whose analysis, despite its apparently simplicity, represents a tremendous mathematical challenge. In his undertaken [1], Poincaré developed and used innovative qualitative techniques based on geometry to understand the global behavior of the solutions. As so, he introduced the concept of (Poincaré) surface of section which he used to analyze solutions in the neighborhood of periodic orbits; defined the concepts of stable and unstable manifolds and described the complicated dynamical behavior that happens when these invariant sets have a transverse intersection. Actually, by identifying this behavior and understand its consequences, Poincaré is considered to be first one who discover the nowadays named chaotic behavior.

AbstractThis paper addresses the m-machine no-wait flow shop problem where the set-up time of a job is separated from its processing time. The performance measure considered is the total flowtime. A new hybrid metaheuristic Genetic AlgorithmCluster Search is proposed to solve the scheduling problem. The performance of the proposed method is evaluated and the results are compared with the best method reported in the literature. Experimental tests show superiority of the new method for the test problems set, regarding the solution quality.

malware analysis
AbstractMalicious software attacks can disrupt information systems, violating security principles of availability, confidentiality and integrity. Attackers use malware to gain control, steal data, keep access and cover traces left on the compromised systems. The dynamic analysis of malware is useful to obtain an execution trace that can be used to assess the extent of an attack, to do incident response and to point to adequate counter-measures. An analysis of the captured malware can provide analysts with information about its behavior, allowing them to review the malicious actions performed during its execution on the target. The behavioral data gathered during the analysis consists of filesystem and network activity traces; a security analyst would have a hard time sieving through a maze of textual event data in search of relevant information. We present a behavioral event visualization framework that allows for an easier realization of the malicious chain of events and for quickly spotting interesting actions performed during a security compromise. Also, we analyzed more than 400 malware samples from different families and showed that they can be classified based on their visual signature. Finally, we distribute one of our tools to be freely used by the community.

Malware Analysis
AbstractMalicious programs pose a major threat to Internet-connected systems, increasing the importance of studying their behavior in order to fight against them. In this paper, we propose definitions to the different types of behavior that a program can present during its execution. Based on those definitions, we define suspicious behavior as the group of actions that change the state of a target system. We also propose a set of network and system-level dangerous activities that can be used to denote the malignity in suspicious behaviors, which were extracted from a large set of malware samples. In addition, we evaluate the malware samples according to their suspicious behavior. Moreover, we developed filters to translate from lower-level execution traces to the observed dangerous activities and evaluated them in the context of actual malware.

AbstractRecently, many chaos-based communication systems have been proposed. They can present the many interesting properties of spread spectrum modulations. Besides, they can represent a low-cost increase in security. However, their major drawback is to have a Bit Error Rate (BER) general performance worse than their conventional counterparts. In this paper, we review some innovative techniques that can be used to make chaos-based communication systems attain lower levels of BER in non-ideal environments. In particular, we succinctly describe techniques to counter the effects of finite bandwidth, additive noise and delay in the communication channel. Although much research is necessary for chaos-based communication competing with conventional techniques, the presented results are auspicious.

AbstractIn this work, we present two different hybrid pinning strategies to synchronize a complex network of identical agents into a known desired solution. The first strategy is the chaos control hybrid pinning in which pinning synchronization control and chaos control are merged. The second strategy is the nonidentical reference hybrid pinning, in which the pinning reference dynamical behavior is different from network nodes dynamical behavior.

AbstractWe present a new framework to the formulation of the problem of isochronal synchronization for networks of delay-coupled oscillators. Using a linear transformation to change coordinates of the network state vector, this method allows straightforward definition of the error system, which is a critical step in the formulation of the synchronization problem. The synchronization problem is then solved on the basis of Lyapunov-Krasovskii theorem. Following this approach, we show how the error system can be defined such that its dimension can be the same as (or smaller than) that of the network state vector. © 2012 American Institute of Physics.
