AbstractThree different techniques are applied for accurate constitutive parameters determination of isotropic split-ring resonator (SRR) and SRR with a cut wire (Composite) metamaterial (MM) slabs. The first two techniques use explicit analytical calibration-dependent and calibration-invariant expressions while the third technique is based on Lorentz and Drude dispersion models. We have tested these techniques from simulated scattering (S-) parameters of two classic SRR and Composite MM slabs with various level of losses and different calibration plane factors. From the comparison, we conclude that whereas the extracted complex permittivity of both slabs by the analytical techniques produces unphysical results at resonance regions, that by the dispersion model eliminates this shortcoming and retrieves physically accurate constitutive parameters over the whole analyzed frequency region. We argue that incorrect retrieval of complex permittivity by analytical methods comes from spatial dispersion effects due to the discreteness of conducting elements within MM slabs which largely vary simulated S-parameters in the resonance regions where the slabs are highly spatially dispersive.

AbstractA promising calibration-independent microwave method is proposed for complex permeability extraction of metamaterial structures composed of periodic split-ring resonators. For the retrieval process, uncalibrated (raw) complex scattering parameter measurements of three measurement configurations in free-space are utilized. The advantage of the proposed method is that it employs the transmission-only scattering parameters of metamaterial slabs in the permeability retrieval. This approach improves measurement stability and accuracy and eliminates measurement errors, if any, occurring in reflection S-parameters of the slab. It is validated by retrieving the magnetic properties of various homogeneous metamaterial slabs.

AbstractThe effect of magnetic field enhanced plasma immersion ion implantation (PIII) in silicon substrate has been investigated at low and high pulsed bias voltages. The magnetic field in magnetic bottle configuration was generated by two magnetic coils installed outside the vacuum chamber. The presence of both, electric and magnetic field in PIII creates a system of crossed E×B fields, promoting plasma rotation around the target. The magnetized electrons drifting in crossed E×B fields provide electron-neutral collision. Consequently, the efficient background gas ionization augments the plasma density around the target where a magnetic confinement is achieved. As a result, the ion current density increases, promoting changes in the samples surface properties, especially in the surface roughness and wettability and also an increase of implantation dose and depth.

Transmission line theory
AbstractA nonlinear lumped element transmission line (NLETL) that consists of an LC-ladder network can be used to convert a rectangular input pump pulse into a series of RF oscillations at the output. The discreteness of the LC sections in the network contributes to the line dispersion while the nonlinearity of the LC elements produces the nonlinear characteristics of the line. Both of these properties combine to produce wave trains of high frequency. This paper describes an NLETL circuit model that is used to simulate RF generation for a given input pump pulse and the experiments used to validate the simulated results. The circuit model is used to study a nonlinear capacitive line that comprises nonlinear C but linear L and a nonlinear inductive line that comprises nonlinear L but linear C. Extensive and comprehensive parametric studies were carried out for the various NLETLs to understand the behavior and characteristics of these lines. Interesting observations were made, and explanations were given for their occurrence. A hybrid line that comprises both nonlinear elements L and C was also investigated using the circuit model with the goal of better matching to a resistive load. Simulations of the hybrid line indicate promising results.

AbstractThis paper models an n-stage stacked Blumlein generator for bipolar pulses for various load conditions. Calculation of the voltage amplitudes in time domain at the load and between stages is described for an n-stage generator. For this, the reflection and transmission coefficients are mathematically modeled where impedance discontinuity occurs (i.e., at the junctions between two transmission lines). The mathematical model developed is assessed by comparing simulation results to experimental data from a two-stage Blumlein solid-state prototype.

AbstractPlasma immersion ion implantation (PIII) process is a three dimensional surface modification method that is quite mature and well known to the surface engineering community nowadays, especially to those working in the field of plasma-materials interaction, aiming at both industrial and academic applications. More recently, deposition methods have been added to PIII, the PIII&D, opening possibilities of broader range of applications of these techniques. So, PIII&D is becoming a routine method of surface modification, with the advantage of pushing up the retained dose levels limited by the sputtering due to ion implantation. Therefore, well adherent, thick, three-dimensional films without stress are possible to be achieved, at relatively low cost, using PIII&D. In this paper, we will discuss about a few PIII and PIII&D experiments that have been performed recently to achieve surface improvements in different materials: 1 - high temperature nitrogen PIII in Ti6Al4V alloy in which a deep nitrogen rich treated layer resulted in surface improvements as increase of hardness, corrosion resistance and resistance to wear of the Ti alloy; 2 - nanostructures in ZnO films, obtained by PIII&D of vaporized & ionized Zn source; 3 - combined implantation and deposition of calcium for biomaterial activity of Ti alloy (PIII&D), allowing the growth of hydroxyapatite in a body solution; 4 - magnetron sputtering deposition of Cr that was enhanced by the glow discharge Ar plasma to allow implantation and deposition of Cr on SAE 1070 steel (PIII&D) resulting in surfaces with high resistance to corrosion; and 5 - implantation of nitrogen by ordinary PIII into this Cr film, which improved resistance to corrosion, while keeping the tribological properties as good as for the SAE 1070 steel surface.

Ti-Al-4V alloy
AbstractThe search for alloys with improved high-temperature specific strength and creep-resistance properties for aerospace applications has led in the last decades to sustained research activities to develop new alloys and/or improve existing ones. Titanium and its alloys are excellent for applications in structural components submitted to high temperatures owing to their high strength to weight ratio, good corrosion resistance and metallurgical stability. Its high creep resistance is of great importance in enhancing engine performance. However, the affinity by oxygen is one of main factors that limit its application as structural material at high temperatures. Materials with adequate behavior at high temperatures and aggressive environmental became a scientific requirement, technological and economically nowadays. The objective of this work is the mechanical and microstructural characterization of the Ti-6Al-4V alloy after treatment by nitrogen Plasma Immersion Ion Implantation (PIII) process. The aim of this process is the improvement of superficial mechanical properties of the Ti-6Al-4V alloy. The selected alloy after ionic implantation process by plasma immersion was submitted to creep tests at 600°C, in constant load mode at 250 and 319 MPa. The techniques used in this work were optical microscopy and scanning electronic microscopy. The fractograph analysis of the samples tested in creep shows narrowing phenomena and microcavities. The creep results show the significant increase of material resistance, it can be used as protection of oxidation in high temperatures applications.

AbstractRVC samples were treated by nitrogen plasma immersion ion implantation (N-PIII) for electrodes production. High-voltage pulses with amplitudes of -3.0 kV or -10.0 kV were applied to the RVC samples while the treatment time was 10, 20 and 30 min. The samples were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and electrochemical measurements. The SEM images present an apparent enhancement of the surface roughness after the treatment probably due to the surface sputtering during the PIII process. This observation is in agreement with the specific electrochemical surface area (SESA) of RVC electrodes. An increase was observed of the SESA values for the PIII-treated samples compared to the untreated specimen. Some oxygen and nitrogen containing groups were introduced on the RVC surface after the PIII treatment. Both plasma-induced process: the surface roughening and the introduction of the polar species on the RVC surface are beneficial for the RVC electrodes application.

KeywordsElectron scattering - Error analysis
AbstractAn analytical method is proposed to evaluate the experimental uncertainty in the electron temperature measurements in the TCABR tokamak. Solving the integral equation resulting from the convolution of two functions, one representing, the scattered light and the other the spectral apparatus function, i.e., the polychromator, an analytical expression for the electron temperature is obtained, from which the uncertainty in the measured value is readily evaluated. The results show that the major contribution to the error comes from the noise in the signal; the uncertainties in the filters parameters do not contribute significantly to the total error.

AbstractWe have applied the phase unwrapping technique to resolve the phase ambiguity problem arising from complex expressions of scattering parameters, for re°ection-only measurement con¯gurations, since, at some instances, only one side of the sample under test is accessible for electromagnetic measurements. We considered two di®erent measurement con¯gurations for testing the applicability of the phase unwrapping technique as: 1) two identical samples with di®erent lengths °ushed by a short-circuit termination and 2) one sample shorted by a varying short-circuit termination. For each measurement con¯guration, the underlying expressions for the re°ection scattering parameters are derived. For both cases, we evaluated the suitability of the phase unwrapping technique by considering a highly-dispersive medium (distilled water) as our test sample. We note that continuity of the real part of the complex wavelength is a key issue in the unwrapping technique for (one-port) re°ection-only measurements.
