AbstractThere is currently no general theory of multicom_ ponent material sputtering with variations in composi_ tion; however this process is becoming more and more widely used because of the increasingly important role of plasma technologies in forming nanostructured materials. The sputtering rates for binary compounds of lead chalcogenides PbX (X = Te, Se, S) were inves_ tigated in detail in [1, 2]. For the sputtering of solid solutions based on PbX, a model [3] based on taking the sublimation energy of the binary compounds of a ternary solution into account was proposed. For func_ tional testing of this theory, it is effective to use ternary compounds comprised of binary compounds with almost identical binding energies, resulting in uniformity of the sputtering rates upon variations in the composition. The lead telluridetin telluride Pb1 xSnxTe solid solutions were investigated as such test materials. These materi_ als are one of the most advanced multicomponent semiconductors, and are widely used in IR optoelec_ tronics [47] and in a new generation of thermoelec_ tric devices [8]. Their key feature is the opportunity to make task_specific changes of the band_gap width and refraction index [4, 5] by changing the mole fraction x within the range from 0 to 1. The band_gap width of Pb1 xSnxTe increases with decreasing x, then becomes equal to zero, and then increases to a value corre_ sponding to SnTe; thus, the band edges remain inverted. Development of the technology of plasma treatment of these materials is necessary for the effec_ tive and highly economical production of active ele_ ments (photonic crystals, microdisks, and mesastruc_ tures) based on binary compounds and ternary solid solutions integrated onto single_crystal substrates. The purpose of this work was to investigate the rates of sputtering in argon plasma for Pb1 xSnxTe ternary solid solutions with mole fractions varying within the entire range of x from 0 to 1 in view of the crystalline state of the films.

AbstractDirect syntheses of carbon structures including nanodiamond, microdiamond and diamond-like carbon (DLC) on silicon wafers by liquid phase electro-deposition are presented. The solution (ethanol/water) was employed as electrolyte at different concentration levels. Assays were carried out maintaining constant the electric potential between the silicon electrodes in the range of (80−300 V) at current density of approximately 2.0 mA/cm2. Scanning electron microscopy showed that non-uniform, smooth and heterogeneous structures were produced. The structural composition was evaluated by micro-Raman spectroscopy. A mechanism for the formation of sp3 and sp2 hybridizations is proposed.

AbstractThe influence of the boron doped micro and ultra-nanocrystalline diamond (BDD and BDUND) morphologies in the copper photoelectrodeposition was investigated. Copper particles were deposited in the potentiostat mode and under UV irradiation for both electrodes. For BDD, the copper deposits presented high density and uniformity all over the crystal faces. This behavior may be explained by its semiconductor character that promoted additional photogenerated electrons enhancing the copper reduction reaction. Otherwise, for BDUND the copper particles were randomly located with low density. Concerning the nitrate reduction process, Cu/BDD presented a better response and reproducibility compared to those for the Cu/BDUND electrode.

AbstractThe renormalization of the electron g factor by the confining potential in semiconductor nanostructures is considered. A new effective k · p Hamiltonian for the electronic states in IIIV semiconductor nanostructures in the presence of an external magnetic field is introduced. The mesoscopic spin-orbit (Rashba type) and Zeeman interactions are taken into account on an equal footing. It is then solved analytically for the electron effective g factor in symmetric quantum wells (g∗QW). Comparison with different spin quantum beat measurements in GaAs and InGaAs structures demonstrates the accuracy and utility of the theory. The quantum size effects in g∗QW are easily understood and its anisotropy g∗QW (i.e., the difference between the in-plane and perpendicular configurations) is shown to be given by a mesoscopic spin-orbit effect having the same origin as the Rashba one.

AbstractWe have proposed the growth of ultrananocrystalline diamond (UNCD) thin films on ptype (100) silicon etched with 27wt. % KOH in H 2O. To get homogeneous distribution of micro pyramids on the silicon surface we have varied temperature (62 to 77 oC), etching time (1 to 35 min) and exposition diameter area (5 to 18 mm). For UNCD growth we have used hot filament chemical vapor deposition (HFCVD).The gas mixture have used 1 vol.% methane, 9 vol.% hydrogen and 90 vol.% argon, with the total flow rate of 200 sccm, at work pressure of 30 Torr. Images of Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) showed UNCD covered the silicon surface following the micro pyramidal morphology. Raman spectra (514.5 nm) showed all feature bands of UNCD such as: Transpolyacethylene (1150 cm -1) and graphite (1350-1575 cm -1). The X-ray diffraction confirmed Raman spectroscopy. These results showed the silicon micro pyramidal structures obtained at 20 min, 75 oC and 10 mm exposition diameter area as the more satisfactory for UNCD growth.

AbstractThe development of sensors for relative humidity monitoring, with national technology, is one of the greatest needs identified by National Institute for Space Research (INPE) to allow concerned future projects and minimize dependence on imported components and materials. Therefore, in this work, porous ceramic was manufactured from ZrO 2 and TiO 2 powders, compacted and sintered at different temperatures, for application as air humidity sensing elements. The characterization of the sintered ceramics were carried out through x-ray diffraction (crystalline phases), scanning electron microscopy, SEM (microstructure), density determination and capacitance measurements using a RLC bridge in a climatic chamber. The results evidenced that the air humidity ceramic sensing elements are very promising ones.

AbstractA Blumlein line is a particular Pulse Forming Line, PFL, configuration that allows the generation of high-voltage sub-microsecond square pulses, with the same voltage amplitude as the dc charging voltage, into a matching load. By stacking n Blumlein lines one can multiply in theory by n the input dc voltage charging amplitude. In order to understand the operating behavior of this electromagnetic system and to further optimize its operation it is fundamental to theoretically model it, that is to calculate the voltage amplitudes at each circuit point and the time instant that happens. In order to do this, one needs to define the reflection and transmission coefficients where impedance discontinuity occurs. The experimental results of a fast solid-state switch, which discharges a three stage Blumlein stack, will be compared with theoretical ones.

AbstractIn this work, the binary and ternary composites composed respectively by carbon fiber/polyaniline(CF/PAni) and carbon fiber/multiwall carbon nanotubes/polyaniline (CF/PAni/MWCNT) were synthesized by oxidative polymerization. The composite materials were physically characterized by Scanning electron microscopy, by Raman spectroscopy and electrochemically by cyclic voltammetry. These hybrid composites were designed to be used as supercapacitors. By Raman spectroscopy, a higher conductivity for the CF/PAni/MWCNT composite was observed composite was observed .The highest specific capacitance was achieved to CF/PAni/MWCNT (400Fg-1) which is a good candidate to the supercapacitor electrode.

AbstractVertically aligned carbon nanotubes (VACNT) promise a great role for the study of tissue regeneration. In this paper, we introduce a new biomimetic mineralization routine employing superhydrophilic VACNT films as highly stable template materials. The biomineralization was obtained after VACNT soaking in simulated body fluid solution. Detailed structural analysis reveals that the polycrystalline biological apatites formed due to the −COOH terminations attached to VACNT tips after oxygen plasma etching. Our approach not only provides a novel route for nanostructured materials, but also suggests that COOH termination sites can play a significant role in biomimetic mineralization. These new nanocomposites are very promising as nanobiomaterials due to the excellent human osteoblast adhesion.

AbstractIn this paper, the morphological, structural and electrochemical properties of nanocrystalline diamond (NCD) films grown on carbon fibers (CF) were investigated. The CF substrates were produced at three different heat treatment temperatures (HTT):1000, 1500 and 2000 °C. The HTT variation promoted different organization indexes on the CF structures. Consequently, the NCD coating formation was strongly affected by the substrate HTT. The changes in the properties of the diamond films were discussed as a function of the film morphology evolution using CH4 flow rate of 0.25, 0.5 and 1.0 sccm in the feed gas. The X-ray diffraction measurements for the CF and NCD/CF composites were determinant to characterize the crystallinity of the NCD films as a function of the CF HTT and of the CH4 addition. Based on the diffractograms, the Scherrer's equation was applied to the (111) NCD peak, resulting in grain size values varying from 11.0 to 5.0 nm depending on the CH4 flow rate and on the CF HTT. The scanning electron microscopy images confirmed the deposition of a continuous NCD coating with high nucleation rate covering the whole CF, while their quality was analyzed by Raman spectroscopy measurements. The NCD grain agglomerates increased as a function of the increase in the CH4 flow rate from 0.25 to 1.0 sccm, showing similar film morphology to that of the unfaceted diamond balls obtained by chemical vapor deposition. This behavior confirmed the expected tendency by decreasing the diamond quality with the CH4 addition, especially for the films grown on CF treated at 1500 and 2000 °C. This performance was also corroborated by the cyclic voltammetry measurements concerning the electrode potential window and their responses in a redox couple.
