ResumoIn this paper we explore some dynamical features on the non-linear interactions among equatorial waves. The shallow-water equation model with the equatorial beta-plane approximation is used for this purpose. The Galerkin method is applied to the governing equations with the basis functions given by the eigensolutions of the linear problem. From the phase space expansion of two particular integrals of motion of the system, quadratic to lowest order, some constraints are obtained which the coupling coefficients must satisfy in order to ensure the invariance of such integrals. From the numerical evaluation of the coupling coefficients, these constraints are used to determine the possible resonant triads among equatorial waves. Numerical integrations of the resonant three-wave problem show that the energy of the waves in a resonant triad evolves periodically in time, with the period and amplitude of the energy oscillations dependent on the magnitude of the initial amplitudes of the waves and the way in which the initial energy is distributed among the triad components. The high-frequency modes are found to be energetically more active than the low-frequency modes. The latter tend to act as 'catalytic' components in a resonant triad. Integrations of the problem of two resonant triads coupled by a single mode point out the importance of gravity waves in the intertriad energy exchanges, suggesting the significance of these modes in the redistribution of energy throughout the atmospheric motion spectrum. The results also show that the intertriad energy exchanges provided by the highest frequency mode of two triads occur in a longer time-scale than the intratriad interactions. Therefore, these results also suggest the importance of the high-frequency modes in the generation of the low-frequency variability (intraseasonal and even longer term) of the atmospheric flow.

ResumoComplexity and predictability of daily precipitation in a tropical semi-arid region (Ceara State, Brazil) is assessed by applying entropy concepts. Precipitation regimes in that region depend on several dynamical forcings, the most important being the displacement and activity of the Intertropical Convergence Zone in the Atlantic Ocean. Topography is another important factor that influences the spatial distribution of rainfall in the region. A hierarchical approach based on sequences of events of different lengths is used to estimate complexity of daily precipitation records. It is shown that precipitation in Ceara exhibit more random than periodic sequences, which indicates a large degree of complexity. Nevertheless, there is indication of potentially inherent rules in the precipitation time-series that could ultimately improve prediction on time-scales between 9-11 days. It is suggested that synoptic-scale disturbances (1-8 days) represent important sources of rules in the precipitation regimes in this region.

ResumoAtmospheric variability in outgoing long-wave radiation (OLR) and tropospheric relative vorticity (VOR) over the South American region was studied from 1979 to 1996 using the complex Morlet wavelet function. The analyses focus on spatial variation in intraseasonal and submonthly scales. Scalograms were used to measure submonthly intraseasonal oscillations in convection, which were found to be predominant in the tropical regions. However, 7-day and 15-day oscillations were observed at tropical and extratropical latitudes in spring and winter, indicating that transient disturbances play a more prominent role. Regarding VOR, tropical energy intensities were highest in the spring and summer, whereas subtropical and extratropical energy intensities were highest in the autumn and winter. The dynamics of the 25-day and 45-day VOR oscillations indicates a possible correlation with Rossby waves over the eastern tropical Pacific Ocean, mainly during the summer. During winter, the 7-day and 15-day VOR oscillations are more frequent at higher latitudes and are enhanced along storm tracks. It was also observed that convection amplitudes in the regions of maximum intensity change appreciably from year to year and from season to season, showing that the behavior of the submonthly and intraseasonal oscillations is nonperiodic and correlates strongly with El Niño/Southern Oscillation years. These results confirm the efficiency of wavelet analysis for time-scale studies of atmospheric variability. .
