Resumohe energetics and behavior of midtropospheric troughs over the Southern Hemisphere and their relationship with South America surface cyclogenesis were studied during the winters of 1999-2003. All surface cyclogenesis situations over Uruguay and adjacent areas associated with 500-hPa troughs were analyzed. The atmospheric circulation associated with type-B and type-C cyclones form the basis for two composites: composite B (with 25 cases) and composite C (with 13 cases). The results showed that the midtropospheric troughs were more intense in composite C than in composite B before the surface cyclogenesis and that the opposite occurred during the surface cyclogenesis. The baroclinic conversion was dominant in both composites. In composite B, the ageostrophic flux convergence (AFC) contributed positively to the intensification of the surface cyclone since it imported energy into the area before the cyclogenesis started. But in composite C, the AFC served as a sink because it exported energy. Based on these results, it can be concluded that (i) the trough was crucial for the cyclogenesis; (ii) the variables in the mid- and upper levels did not differ significantly from one composite to another; (iii) the northerly heat and moisture flow acted as a preconditioning for the cyclogenesis, mainly for composite C; (iv) the baroclinic conversion dominated the energetics; and (v) the AFC had only a secondary role, contributing negatively to the development of the cyclone in composite C and positively to the initial development in composite B.

ResumoThis work presents a characterization of the Amazonian precipitation diurnal cycle through an analysis of radar reflectivity profiles and drop-size distributions attained respectively from a microwave vertical profiler and a disdrometer during the 1999 WET-AMC experiment. In such analysis, precipitation was split in time and classes, which provided information on the daily variation of typical reflectivity profiles and the raindrop spectra associated with them. A clear signature of the diurnal cycle can be observed in the radar profiles and in the raindrop size distribution; for instance, the stratiform rainfall is dominant in the period of 03:00 to 09:00 LST showing the collapse of the convective structures dominant during the afternoon. The time interval centered at 21:00 LST shows the collapse of the ice phase and convective activity, typical of the transition from convective to stratiform precipitation. The size distribution and the reflectivity profiles also depend on the rainfall intensity. The combined analysis of the diurnal cycle and rainfall intensity shows interesting features of the cloud life cycle over the Amazon region, including the initiation of ice and the establishment of the bright band. Statistical analysis revealed that most RDSDs exhibit a single peak around 0.5 mm (48.9%), 1.0 mm (30.7%) or 2.0 mm (2.5%) and that only a few are effectively bimodal, which permitted the use of gamma distributions to fit most of the observed raindrop spectra.

ResumoThe Amazon Basin provides an excellent environment for studying the sources, transformations, and properties of natural aerosol particles and the resulting links between biological processes and climate. With this framework in mind, the Amazonian Aerosol 5 Characterization Experiment (AMAZE-08), carried out from 7 February to 14 March 2008 during the wet season in the central Amazon Basin, sought to understand the formation, transformations, and cloud-forming properties of fine- and coarse-mode biogenic aerosol particles, especially as related to their effects on cloud activation and regional climate. Special foci included (1) the production mechanisms of secondary 10 organic components at a pristine continental site, including the factors regulating their temporal variability, and (2) predicting and understanding the cloud-forming properties of biogenic particles at such a site. In this overview paper, the field site and the instrumentation employed during the campaign are introduced. Observations and findings are reported, including the large-scale context for the campaign, especially 15 as provided by satellite observations. New findings presented include: (i) a particle number-diameter distribution from 10nm to 10 ìm that is representative of the pristine tropical rain forest and recommended for model use; (ii) the absence of substantial quantities of primary biological particles in the submicron mode as evidenced by mass spectral characterization; (iii) the large-scale production of secondary organic mate20 rial; (iv) insights into the chemical and physical properties of the particles as revealed by thermodenuder-induced changes in the particle number-diameter distributions and mass spectra; and (v) comparisons of ground-based predictions and satellite-based observations of hydrometeor phase in clouds. A main finding of AMAZE-08 is the dominance of secondary organic material as particle components. The results pre25 sented here provide mechanistic insight and quantitative parameters that can serve to increase the accuracy of models of the formation, transformations, and cloud-forming properties of biogenic natural aerosol particles, especially as related to their effects on cloud activation and regional climate.

ResumoThe landscape of central Amazonia is composed of plateaus and valleys. Previous observations have shown preferential pooling of CO2 in the valleys, suggesting that the change in CO2 storage in the canopy air space (S) will be spatially variable at the scale of the topography. This may affect the interpretation of the net ecosystem CO2 exchange (NEE) rates measured on the plateaus if they have used one single atmospheric CO2 concentration ([CO2]) vertical profile measurement system. We have measured the diel, spatial and seasonal variation of S along the topography by using a set of automated [CO2] vertical profile measurement systems. In addition, NEE, the above-canopy turbulent exchange of CO2 (Fc) and meteorological variables were also measured on a micrometeorological tower located on the plateau. The nocturnal accumulation of CO2 was larger on the slopes and in the valleys than on the plateau and was larger in the dry period than in the wet period. In addition, the release of this CO2 occurred later in the day on the slopes and in the valleys than on the plateau. Differences in the flow regime above the canopy along the topographical gradient, lateral drainage of respired CO2 downslope, and temporal, spatial, and seasonal variation of soil CO2 efflux (Rsoil) are thought to have contributed to this. These conditions cause S to be higher in magnitude on the slopes and in the valleys than on the plateau during midmorning hours. We demonstrate that there is a larger underestimation of Reco by nighttime eddy covariance (EC) measurements in the dry period than in the wet period. In addition, Reco as derived from measurements only on the plateau (Fc + SP) does not agree with that derived by an independent method. Yet S fluxes peaked at about 18:0020:00 on the slopes and in the valleys, following a continuous decrease after this period until reaching a minimum just after dawn. NEE derived from Fc measured on the plateau and S measured on the plateau, slope and valley increased the estimates of Reco on the plateau by about 30% and 70% in the wet and dry periods, respectively. Particularly for flux-tower sites over complex terrain, we recommend measuring the spatial variability of CO2 at, at least two, more points along the topography to determine to what extent horizontal gradients and storage changes may contribute to tower fluxes. Finally, for sites that present topographical characteristics similar to that described in this study, care must be taken with the use of single in-canopy profiles of [CO2] to correct EC fluxes.

ResumoThe relationship between tropical Atlantic hurricanes (Hs), atmospheric easterly waves (AEWs), and West African mesoscale convective systems (MCSs) is investigated. It points out atmospheric conditions over West Africa before hurricane formation. The analysis was performed for two periods, JuneNovember in 2004 and 2005, during which 12 hurricanes (seven in 2004, five in 2005) were selected. Using the AEW signature in the 700 hPa vorticity, a backward trajectory was performed to the African coast, starting from the date and position of each hurricane, when and where it was catalogued as a tropical depression. At this step, using the Meteosat-7 satellite dataset, we selected all the MCSs around this time and region, and tracked them from their initiation until their dissipation. This procedure allowed us to relate each of the selected Hs with AEWs and a succession of MCSs that occurred a few times over West Africa before initiation of the hurricane. Finally, a dipole in sea surface temperature (SST) was observed with a positive SST anomaly within the region of H generation and a negative SST anomaly within the Gulf of Guinea. This SST anomaly dipole could contribute to enhance the continental convergence associated with the monsoon that impacts on the West African MCSs formation.

ResumoThis review provides a comprehensive account of what is known presently about Amazonian aerosol particles and concludes by formulating outlook and priorities for further research. The review is organized to follow the life cycle of Amazonian aerosol particles. It begins with a discussion of the primary and secondary sources relevant to the Amazonian particle burden, followed by a presentation of the particle properties that characterize the mixed populations present over the Amazon Basin at different times and places. These properties include number and mass concentrations and distributions, chemical composition, hygroscopicity, and cloud nucleation ability. The review presents Amazonian aerosol particles in the context of natural compared to anthropogenic sources as well as variability with season and meteorology. This review is intended to facilitate an understanding of the current state of knowledge on Amazonian aerosol particles specifically and tropical continental aerosol particles in general and thereby to enhance future research in this area.

ResumoThis review discusses the challenges for integrating seasonal climate forecast information in user applications within the design of a simplified end-to-end forecasting system framework. Seasonal climate forecasts are operationally produced at various climate prediction centers around the world. However, these forecasts are rarely objectively integrated in application models to help the end user decision-making process, in spite of recent advances demonstrated through pilot projects in health, agricultural and water resources applications. An example of crop yield forecast produced as part of the EUROBRISA multi-institutional initiative is presented for illustrating some of the challenges. The challenges for moving toward a more objective use of seasonal climate forecasts to help support decision making involve more efficient interaction among climate scientists, system scientists and decision makers, with the end user driving the skill assessment of the entire end-to-end forecasting system through real world forecast applications.

ResumoBaric troughs were studied over the Alagoas State, Brazil, in 2003. The relationship between these synoptic systems, weekly sea surface temperature anomaly and adverse meteorological phenomena in the Alagoas State, was analyzed. The maximum trough frequency occurred at low levels during the wetter and colder season in the investigated region (June and July). Most of the troughs were observed at 1200 UTC. It was also noted that 87% of the troughs was associated with wavy disturbance in the trade winds on the northwestern periphery of the subtropical South Atlantic High. These troughs were associated with meteorological phenomena in a stable and an unstable atmosphere. Copyright (C) 2010 Royal Meteorological Society.

ResumoThe Amazon Basin provides an excellent environment for studying the sources, transformations, and properties of natural aerosol particles and the resulting links between biological processes and climate. With this framework in mind, the Amazonian Aerosol Characterization Experiment (AMAZE-08), carried out from 7 February to 14 March 2008 during the wet season in the central Amazon Basin, sought to understand the formation, transformations, and cloud-forming properties of fine-and coarse-mode biogenic aerosol particles, especially as related to their effects on cloud activation and regional climate. Special foci included (1) the production mechanisms of secondary organic components at a pristine continental site, including the factors regulating their temporal variability, and (2) predicting and understanding the cloud-forming properties of biogenic particles at such a site. In this overview paper, the field site and the instrumentation employed during the campaign are introduced. Observations and findings are reported, including the large-scale context for the campaign, especially as provided by satellite observations. New findings presented include: (i) a particle number-diameter distribution from 10 nm to 10 mu m that is representative of the pristine tropical rain forest and recommended for model use; (ii) the absence of substantial quantities of primary biological particles in the submicron mode as evidenced by mass spectral characterization; (iii) the large-scale production of secondary organic material; (iv) insights into the chemical and physical properties of the particles as revealed by thermodenuder-induced changes in the particle number-diameter distributions and mass spectra; and (v) comparisons of ground-based predictions and satellite-based observations of hydrometeor phase in clouds. A main finding of AMAZE-08 is the dominance of secondary organic material as particle components. The results presented here provide mechanistic insight and quantitative parameters that can serve to increase the accuracy of models of the formation, transformations, and cloud-forming properties of biogenic natural aerosol particles, especially as related to their effects on cloud activation and regional climate.
