ResumoIn tropical regions, all-sky imaging observations of the 01 630 nm emission show quasi north-south aligned intensity depletion bands, which are the optical signatures of large-scale F-region plasma irregularities (plasma bubbles). By observing the west-east motion of the intensity depleted bands it is possible to infer the ionospheric plasma bubble zonal velocity. All-sky images from Sao Joao do Cariri (7.4degreesS, 36.5degreesW) and from Cachoeira Paulista (22.7degreesS, 45.0degreesW), Brazil, between December 1999 and February 2000 (summer in the southern hemisphere), are analyzed in order to investigate the nocturnal and latitudinal behavior of the ionospheric plasma bubble zonal drift velocities. The data set included 12 nights from Sao Joao do Cariri (equatorial region) and 12 nights from Cachoeira Paulista (low latitude). An interesting characteristic observed is the significant latitudinal variations in the ionospheric plasma bubble zonal drifts in the tropical region, between 20:00-22:00 local time. The average result of the latitudinal analyses has revealed two peaks in the ionospheric plasma bubble zonal drift velocities. One peak is located near the magnetic equator (similar to160 m/s), occurring between 21:00 and 22:00 LT, and another peak is located at approximately 19degreesS latitude (similar to150 m/s), occurring between 20:00 and 22:00 LT. The valley in the latitudinal variations is located approximately near 10degreesS (similar to120 m/s) and this reduction in the ionospheric plasma bubble zonal drifts is attributed to a reduction in the zonal neutral wind velocities. A comparison of the observed latitudinal variations in the ionospheric plasma bubble zonal drifts with the zonal winds obtained from the HWM-90 model reveals good agreement. We find that the increase in electron density within the Equatorial Ionospheric Anomaly was sufficient to account for the observed reduction in the zonal wind velocities. The observed development and motion of the nighttime F-region irregularities in the tropical region are presented and discussed in this paper.

ResumoData collected during the first two observational campaigns, conducted in August 1998 and December 1999, using the new 50 MHz coherent back-scatter radar, developed at INPE, that became operational at the magnetic equatorial site at Sao Luis, (2.33degreesS, 44.2degreesW), Brazil, are analyzed in this paper. The spatial and temporal distribution of 3-m irregularity power in the form of range-time-intensity maps and spectral distribution in the form of spectrograms are analyzed for 'quiet' conditions and during geomagnetic storm disturbances. The analysis has brought out some new findings, besides confirming some of the already known storm response features of the EEJ and its plasma instabilities. Among the highlights of the results are: the electrical coupling between the equatorial and auroral electrojets is important even on a 'quiet' day, and gets very strong during magnetic storm disturbances; disturbance prompt penetration electric field, and the delayed electric field from disturbance dynamo, control the 3-m plasma wave development and inhibition in different degrees during the storm main phase and recovery phase; the amplitudes of the disturbance are larger during the morning hours than in the afternoon, in agreement with theoretical models; the height dependence of the relative dominance of the type-1 and type-2 waves generated by disturbance electric field is different from that of quiet conditions, the relative power of the type-2 getting enhanced at higher levels in the former case. A few other results are also discussed in this paper.

ResumoIn situ measurements of the height variation of the ionospheric electric field and electron density were made on 18 December, 1995 at 2117 h (LT) from the equatorial station Alcantara (2.31°S; 44.4°W) in Brazil, with a rocket-borne electric field double probe and two different types of electron density probes. The main objective of the experiment was to study the characteristic features of the electron density and electric field fluctuations associated with plasma bubbles. The rocket reached an apogee attitude of 557 km covering a horizontal range of 589 km. The upleg electron density profile showed the presence of a clearly defined base for the F-region around 300 km, while the downleg profile showed the presence of a wide spectrum of electric field and electron density irregularities in the entire F-region. Spectral analysis of the fluctuations in the electron density and the electric field clearly indicated the presence of sharp spectral peaks associated to each other at several heights. This is suggestive of the electrostatic nature of these E-field waves with associated plasma density fluctuations. These waves seem to extend over hundreds of kilometres in the horizontal and vertical directions. The sources of these waves are not well understood, however.

International Equatorial Electrojet Year (IEEY)
ResumoThe Inter Division Commission for Developing Countries (IDCDC) organized two sessions at the joint scientific assembly of the International Association of Geomagnetism and Aeronomy (IAGA) and International Association of Seismology and Physics of the Earths Interior that took place at Hanoi, Vietnam during August 1931, 2001. These sessions reviewed the latest developments and progress of equatorial electrojet studies since the IAGA designated International Equatorial Electrojet YearIEEY was realized during 19921994. During the IEEY period the IAGA community had established observational networks and experimental facilities in the equatorial belt of Africa, Brazil, India and Vietnam. Geomagnetic and Aeronomy data were acquired using a variety of instruments such as, magnetometers, ionosondes/digisondes, VHF coherent back-scatter and incoherent scatter radars, optical interferometers, etc. Much of these experimental setups have been in continued operation and are generating multi-disciplinary data to study the electrodynamics of the equatorial electrojet and associated phenomena and their variabilities arising from solar and geophysical forcing, thus, providing newinputs for collaboration/ integrated research in the field. Further, the availability of vector magnetic field from polar orbiting Orsted and Champ satellites have given newdimensions to study the equatorial electrojet on global scale. The two sessions at the Hanoi were designed to cover emerging trends in all aspects of electrojet studies using data from ground and space. The papers in this volume cover empirical model of the electrojet, control of dynamo and magnetospheric sources to equatorial enhancement of magnetic variations, ionospheric irregularities, Spread-F dynamics, ionospheric electron density and electrical field soundings using in situ measurements from rockets, signatures of short-period gravity waves in night-glow measurements, ionospheric e=ects of magnetic storms, etc.

ResumoWe present a detailed statistical analysis of the association of 40 sprite events with lightning from the parent thunderstorm. Both temporal and spatial criteria were used to identify the parent cloud-to-ground (CG) lightning. Sprite images were GPS time stamped and their locations triangulated. In contrast to previous reports of nearly one-to-one association of sprites with positive cloud-to-ground (+CG) lightning, 11 events (27%) did not have a +CG recorded by the National Lightning Detection Network (NLDN), and 7 events (17%) had neither NLDN nor very low frequency (VLF) signatures associated with them. A negative cloud-to-ground (-CG) preceded one of these events by 9 ms. As expected for similar to 16.7 ins integrated images, none of the sprites without a +CG had any discernible visual characteristic that would distinguish them from "regular positive sprites". We have calculated the distribution of time intervals (Delta t = t(sprite) - t(lightning)) for the sprites that had a parent +CG flash registered by the NLDN or VLF systems, and the distribution of distances between the sprite nadir positions and the flash locations registered by the NLDN. The time interval (Delta t) distribution had a peak around 10-20 ins and a mean of 30 ins (total). This distribution is broadly consistent with the characteristic single electron avalanche time scale associated with streamer growth between similar to70 and 85 km. The distribution of the distances (Deltas) between the nadir point of sprites and the parent +CGs showed that approximately two-thirds of the sprites occurred within 50 kin lateral displacement from the parent CG. The parent +CG peak current distribution had a maximum at 40-50 kA and mean of 60 kA, suggesting that high peak currents (I greater than or equal to 75 kA) are not a necessary prerequisite for sprites. The peak current distribution for all +CGs of the storm, with a maximum around 10-20 kA and mean of 27 kA, exhibits a qualitatively different form from the peak current distribution of the parent +CGs producing sprites.

ResumoThe equatorial ionospheric irregularities have been observed in the past few years by different techniques (e.g. ground-based radar, digisonde, GPS, optical instruments, in situ satellite and rocket instrumentation), and its time evolution and propagation characteristics can be used to study important aspects of ionospheric dynamics and thermosphere-ionosphere coupling. At present, one of the most powerful optical techniques to study the largescale ionospheric irregularities is the all-sky imaging photometer system, which normally measures the strong Fregion nightglow 630 nm emission from atomic oxygen. The monochromatic OI 630 nm emission images usually show quasi-north-south magnetic field-aligned intensity depletion bands, which are the bottomside optical signatures of largescale F-region plasma irregularities (also called plasma bubbles). The zonal drift velocities of the plasma bubbles can be inferred from the space-time displacement of the dark structures (low intensity regions) seen on the images. In this study, images obtained with an all-sky imaging photometer, using the OI 630 nm nightglow emission, from Cachoeira Paulista (22.7 S, 45W, 15.8 S dip latitude), Brazil, have been used to determine the nocturnal monthly and latitudinal variation characteristics of the zonal plasma bubble drift velocities in the low latitude (16.7 S to 28.7 S) region. The east and west walls of the plasma bubble show a different evolution with time. The method used here is based on the western wall of the bubble, which presents a more stable behavior. Also, the observed zonal plasma bubble drift velocities are compared with the thermospheric zonal neutral wind velocities obtained from the HWM-90 model (Hedin et al., 1991) to investigate the thermosphere-ionosphere coupling. Salient features from this study are presented and discussed.

ResumoThe empirical representation of the equatorial spread F (ESF) statistics in the IRI scheme requires well established distribution statistics of ESF occurrence and intensity as a function of local time, season/month, latitude and solar and magnetic activity levels. We present here a regional model for the quiet-time spread F distribution in the Brazilian longitude sector. In view of the well known dependence of spread F occurrence on magnetic declination angle, and the fact that the declination angle varies rapidly from the west coast (Peruvian sector) to the east coast (Brazilian sector) of south America the present model can be said to be valid for the latter sector. 13 years of spread F data simultaneously collected (during 1978-1990) over the equatorial site Fortaleza and low latitude site Cachoeira Paulista are used in this model. Only spread F data that is believed to be related to plasma bubble developments is used in the model. The data were first grouped into solar flux range bins representing low, medium, and high solar activity levels, represented, respectively, by F10.7 less than or equal to 100; 100 < F10.7 < 180; and F10.7 greater than or equal to 180. Spread F percentage occurrence as a function of (nocturnal) local time for each of the 12 months in each solar flux range was calculated, and form the database for the model. Cubic-B spline fits of the data in local time, latitude, season/month and solar flux nodes constitute the structure of the present model. The model confirms many characteristic features of the spread F statistics already known as well as brings out some new outstanding features for the Brazilian sector. Among the results to be highlighted are: The spread F onset and peak occurrence get delayed in local time with increasing distance from the equator, indicating the plasma bubble origin for the low latitude ionogram spread F traces; The plasma bubble occurrence as well as the vertical rise velocity increase with the increase in solar flux; They attain larger values in summer months (centered around December) than in equinoctial months (March and September). The latitudinal variation in spread F, though based only on two-station data sets in this study, looks compatible with the latitude variation of ion density fluctuations observed by the AE-E satellite. The-model wil be made available to interested users.

ResumoOccurrence features of spread-F over Ahmedabad, situated near the anomaly crest region in Indian zone are studied from the quarter hourly ionograms for the years 1983-95. The occurrences of range and frequency types of spread-F over Ahmedabad are seasonal and solar cycle dependent. Frequency type of spread-F is most frequent during June-solstices of low sunspot years. The range type of spread-F is frequent during equinoxes and December-solstices (with lower occurrence) of high sunspot years. ne occurrence features of range spread at Ahmedabad are compared with the occurrence features of range spread over Cachoeira Paulista, a station near the anomaly crest region in Brazil in the American sector. The occurrence of range spread-F over Cachoeira Paulista shows strong seasonal dependence with a distinct maximum during local summer (December solstices) for both low and high sunspot years. The occurrence of range spread over Cachoeira Paulista is much higher than over Ahmedabad.

ResumoIonospheric total electron content (TEC) data obtained over Cachoeira. Paulista (22.5°S, 45°W, dip angle 28°S) from measurements of Faraday rotation of VHF beacon transmission from signals transmitted by GOES 1, 2 and 3 geostationary satellites during the years 1982, 1984, 1986, 1988 and 1989 are used to develop a local empirical model for the TEC for the Brazilian low latitude. The TEC values, predicted by this local model, are compared with those calculated by the IRI95. Discrepancies between these models are found, mainly near sunrise when the IRI predictions for the morning TEC minimum, and the following sunrise increase, are similar to1 hour earlier than observations at all seasons and at all solar activity levels. IRI overestimates the values of TEC for all local times and seasons during solar minimum, except at winter nighttime. Disagreements are also found during afternoon hours near solar maximum with underestimated values of TEC predicted by IRI. Further more, the IRI95 does not predict the near midnight peak in TEC that arises from the equatorial anomaly.

ResumoRecent studies have revealed the existence of an additional layer in the topside equatorial ionosphere, which was named the F-3 layer. Statistical studies using Fortaleza ionograms show that, the F-3 layer Is present on 75% of the days during. December solstices (local summer) of low solar activity period, becoming a very common feature on that location. During those events, the F peak density becomes smaller than its usual value and the peak height can be much higher than the usual h(max) value. Vertical profiles obtained from ionograms, using true height inversion methods, show the existence of a very broad F layer peak, with a very slow height gradient. In this work we compare the observed F layer critical frequency and peak height with their IRI predictions (calculated using the URSI and CCIR coefficients). It was found that the IRI model overestimates the observed frequency by up to 3 MHz and underestimates the peak height by up to 100 km, when the F-3 layer phenomena is present. The vertical distribution of the F region electron density calculated by IRI also differs significantly from the observations during periods of F-3 layer occurrence. It is suggested that this phenomenon could account for some of the discrepancies between IRI predictions and observations, at least for daytime low-latitude locations.
