solar radio burst
ResumoThe first direct observations of Global Positioning System (GPS) L1 (1.57542 GHz) carrier-to-noise ratio degradation due to a solar radio burst are presented for an event that occurred on 7 September 2005. Concurrent carrier-to-noise ratio data from GPS satellites are available from receivers at Arecibo Observatory, Puerto Rico; San Juan, Puerto Rico; and also from Anderson, South Carolina, United States. The right-hand circularly polarized (RHCP) signals from this solar radio burst caused a corresponding decrease in the carrier-to-noise ratio of about 2.3 dB across all visible satellites. The maximum solar radio burst power associated with this event was 8700 solar flux units (1 SFU = 10−22 W/m2/Hz) RHCP at 1600 MHz. Direct observations of GPS semicodeless L2 carrier-to-noise ratio degradation from receivers in Brazil are also presented for a solar radio burst that occurred on 28 October 2003. The maximum degradation at GPS L1 was about 3.0 dB, and a degradation of 10.0 dB was observed on the semicodeless L2 signal. Scaling to historic solar radio burst records suggests that GPS L1 receivers could fail to produce a navigation solution and that semicodeless L1/L2 receivers will fail.

Meteor ablation height
Meteor radar
ResumoModern meteor radars, with peak pulse powers typically of the order of 10 kW, detect around 5000 meteors per day and determine the spatial coordinates and radial velocity of each meteor trail detected. This information is mainly used to determine horizontal winds at heights between about 80 and 100 km with a time resolution of about 1 h, adequate for the study of tides, planetary waves and prevailing winds. Since the detected meteor trails are accurately located in space, it is also possible to determine their mean height distribution. This height distribution depends on the meteor characteristics, in terms of distributions of size, velocity and entrance angle, and the vertical profile of atmospheric density in the height range in question. For sporadic meteors the meteor characteristics appear to depend only on local time, so the measured height distribution can, in principle, be used to obtain information on atmospheric density and its time variations on scales greater than one day. An analysis of more than 5 years of data acquired with a Skiymet meteor radar, installed at Cachoeira Paulista, Brazil (23°S, 45°W), shows the presence of planetary waves, seasonal and long-term variations in atmospheric density. Of particular interest is the potential of this technique for quantifying long-term changes in the atmosphere via ground-based measurements which should not be difficult to maintain over the long time periods required for global change studies.

ResumoIn a magnetized plasma, assuming an effective collision cross section by an equivalent number of neutral dust particles, the Hall (óH) and the Pederson (óP) conductivities are obtained. The Cowling conductivities (óC) are calculated using the measured values of electron densities in the ionospheric E-region heights between 90 and 120 km by the rocket flights over Thumba, India, and the neutral density model calculations as given by the MSIS-E-90 for the geographical latitude=0°, and longitude=80°. The conductivity profiles are compared with the observed profiles on the rocket flights. We see that the height difference between conductivity maxima and current density maxima can be reduced and matched by assuming a height distribution of neutral dust particles in the ionosphere. The justifications for the present modeling, i.e., the equatorial electrojet conductivities including the dust particles and comparison with the alternative theory given by Ronchi et al. [1990. Journal of Geophysical Research 95, 189] are given at the end.

ResumoUsing data acquired with a Digisonde DPS-4 and an Incoherent Scatter Radar both from Jicamarca Radio Observatory, Peru, comparisons of ionospheric vertical drift velocities derived from these two instruments are carried out in this work. They show good agreement during sunset and evening hours (around sunset, up to approximately 22 LT), and also, during the post-midnight (between 02 and 03 LT) and sunrise hours (until 08 LT), when the F-layer bottom side height is around and above 300 km, as well as during events of magnetically disturbed periods when the ionospheric plasma drift may be influenced by the perturbation electric fields arising from (1) direct penetration from high to low magnetic latitudes, and (2) disturbance winds dynamo action driven by Joule heating due to increased energy and momentum deposition into the high-latitude thermosphereionosphere system. The results of this study lend confidence to using Digisonde drift data to study phenomena related to night-time magnetically disturbed periods.

ResumoUpward transport of wave energy and momentum due to gravity, tidal and planetary waves from below and extra-tropics controls the phenomenology of the equatorial atmosphereionosphere system. An important aspect of this phenomenology is the development of small- and large-scale structures including thin layers in the mesosphere and E-region, and the formation of wide spectrum plasma structures of the equatorial F-region, widely known as equatorial spread F/plasma bubble irregularities (that are known to have significant impact on space application systems based on trans-ionospheric radio waves propagation). It seems that the effects of tidal and gravity waves at mesospheric and thermospheric heights and their control of ionospheric densities, electric fields and currents are relatively better known than are the effects originating from vertical coupling due to planetary waves. Results from airglow, radar and ionospheric sounding observations demonstrate the existence of significant planetary wave influence on plasma parameters at E- and F-region heights over equatorial latitudes. We present and discuss here some results showing planetary wave oscillations in concurrent mesospheric winds and equatorial electrojet intensity variations in the Indian sector as well as in the mesospheric airglow and F-layer height variation in Brazil. Also presented are evidences of planetary wave-scale oscillations in equatorial evening pre-reversal electric field (F-region vertical drift) and their effects on equatorial spread F /plasma bubble irregularity development and day-to-day variability.

ResumoGravity wave observations using all-sky CCD imager to measure the airglow OH, 02, and 01 emissions were made at Cachoeira Paulista (22.7 degrees S, 45 degrees W) (CP), at the low-middle latitude in Brazil, from October 1998 to September 1999. Near the equator, at Tanjungsari observatory (6.9 degrees S, 107.9 degrees E) (TJS), Indonesia, another wide angle CCD imager measuring the OH airglow emission layer has been operated from September 2000 to September 2001. With these data sets, a reverse ray tracing method was used to study propagation of gravity waves through the middle atmosphere and to estimate the source region. The CIRA-86 reference zonal wind and temperature models and the GSWM-02 tidal wind model were used in the present analysis. Both observation sites showed apparently similar wave characteristics, except for the horizontal phase speed.. which was much faster in the equatorial region. From the inverse ray tracing calculations, it was found that at CP, only about 15% of the wave events originated in the troposphere. Most of the events were located over the continent within an area of less than 400 km from the observation site. The identified source region in the troposphere showed a seasonal anisotropy, being mainly to the northwest of CP during summer and to the southeast and northwest in winter. This corresponds to the region of high tropospheric convection activity in the South American continent during summer and high meteorological front activity on the southwestern side during winter. At CP more than 70% of the waves showed that the ray tracing paths stopped in the mesosphere. At TJS the ray tracing indicates that 60% of the gravity wave sources might be located in the troposphere with an area of less than 200 km from the observation site, much closer than the case of CP. This corresponds to convective cloud activities on the north and northwest side of TJS. However, during southern hemisphere summer at both observation sites, most of the ray tracing paths stopped at the mesosphere owing to a condition of m(2) < 0 or critical level interactions. ResumoUsing the observed VHF scintillations at equatorial and anomaly crest stations in India during the years 1987-1989, an empirical model is developed. The model employs the cubic spline technique to reproduce the variation of scintillation occurrence with local time, season, solar activity and latitude. The modelled values are compared with observed ones and the agreement is found to be quite good.

ResumoThe nightly and seasonal variability of gravity wave activity and spectra in the mesopause region are studied with 10 years of sodium lidar observations. From the linear layer density response to gravity wave forcing, the lidar data were analyzed to get the atmospheric density perturbations and their spectra. The atmospheric density perturbation, density variance for fluctuations with vertical scales between 2 and 10 km, and amplitudes of density perturbation spectra at m = 2π/8 km and 2π/4 km all exhibit large nightly variability as well as large seasonal variations, with the semiannual maxima occurring near the equinoxes. The mean RMS atmospheric density perturbation and the mean RMS horizontal wind perturbations over our site are 5.1% and 25 m/s, respectively. The growth lengths of the density perturbations in spring and autumn are lower than those in summer and winter, and the annual mean value is 38 km. The annual mean density shear variance is about 15 (%/km)2, and the maxima occur near the equinoxes. The mean Richardson number is about 1.0. The mean value of the RMS vertical wind perturbation is 0.85 m/s with a maximum occurring at the end of the year. The m spectra show power law shapes, and their range of variation is between −2.06 and −3.81 with an annual mean value of −2.93. The ω spectra also show power law shapes, and their range of variation is between −1.06 and −2.32, with an annual mean of −1.64. The mean amplitudes of density perturbation spectrum, Fa(m) (m = 2π/4 km), and of the horizontal wind fluctuation, Fu(m) (m = 2π/4 km), are 1.35(m/cycles) and 3 × 105(m2 s−2/(cycles/m)), respectively. The value of λz* averaged around autumn equinox is 14.8 km, which is lower than the value of 16.8 km, averaged around spring equinox. The annual mean of T* is 23.5 hours. The fact that the joint (m,ω) spectra are not separable, together with the large variability found in the m spectra slopes, is not compatible with linear instability theory but is compatible with Doppler spreading theories and diffusive filtering theory.

Equatorial ionosphere
ResumoThis work presents equatorial ionospheric plasma bubble zonal drift velocity observations and their comparison with model calculations. The bubble zonal velocities were measured using airglow OI630 nm all-sky digital images and the model calculations were performed taking into account flux-tube integrated Pedersen conductivity and conductivity weighted neutral zonal winds. The digital images were obtained from an all-sky imaging system operated over the low-latitude station Cachoeira Paulista (Geogr. 22.5S, 45W, dip angle 31.5S) during the period from October 1998 to August 2000. Out of the 138 nights of imager observation, 29 nights with the presence of plasma bubbles are used in this study. These 29 nights correspond to geomagnetically rather quiet days (KP < 24+) and were grouped according to season. During the early night hours, the calculated zonal drift velocities were found to be larger than the experimental values. The best matching between the calculated and observed zonal velocities were seen to be for a few hours around midnight. The model calculation showed two humps around 20 LT and 24 LT that were not present in the data. Average decelerations obtained from linear regression between 20 LT and 24 LT were found to be: (a) Spring 1998, −8.61 ms−1 h−1; (b) Summer 1999, −0.59 ms−1 h−1; (c) Spring 1999, −11.72 ms−1 h−1; and (d) Summer 2000, −8.59 ms−1 h−1. Notice that Summer and Winter here correspond to southern hemisphere Summer and Winter, not northern hemisphere.

ResumoNear-simultaneous all-sky (180 degrees field of view) observations of the OI 630.0 nm and OI 777.4 nm nightglow emissions are being carried out on a routine basis at "Laboratorio Nacional de Astrofisica (LNA)'', Brazopolis (22.5 degrees S, 45.6 degrees W; dip latitude 17.5 degrees S; altitude 1860 m), Brazil, since September 2002. The all-sky imaging observations of the OI 630.0 nm and OI 777.4 nm emissions, which arise from the dissociative recombination of O-2(+) ions and radiative recombination of O+ ions ( mainly), respectively, are used to monitor the morphology and dynamics of the equatorial F-region at the respective emission heights. In this paper we present and discuss the first observations showing detached equatorial F-region plasma depletions or bubbles. Three cases are presented from observations during the years 2002 and 2003. We suggest a possible mechanism for their generation.
