ResumoWe use radar measurements from the Jicamarca Radio Observatory, magnetometer observations from the Pacific sector and ionosonde data from Brazil to study equatorial ionospheric electric fields during the November 2004 geomagnetic storm. Our data show very large eastward and westward daytime electrojet current perturbations with lifetimes of about an hour (indicative of undershielding and overshielding prompt penetration electric fields) in the Pacific equatorial region during the November 7 main phase of the storm, when the southward IMF, the solar wind and reconnection electric fields, and the polar cap potential drops had very large and nearly steady values. This result is inconsistent with the recent suggestion that solar wind electric fields penetrate without attenuation into the equatorial ionosphere for several hours during storm main phase. The largest daytime prompt penetration electric fields (about 3 mV/m) ever observed over Jicamarca occurred during the November 9 storm main phase, when large equatorial electrojet current and drift perturbations were also present in the Pacific and Brazilian equatorial regions. The rise and decay times of these equatorial electric fields were about 20 min longer than of the corresponding solar wind electric fields. The ratios of prompt penetration electric fields and corresponding solar wind electric field changes were highly variable even during the day, and had largest values near dawn. Also, the prompt penetration electric fields did not show polar cap potential drop saturation effects. Our results clearly highlight that the relationships of prompt penetration and solar wind electric fields, and polar cap potentials are far more complex than implied by simple proportionality factors.

ResumoA very intense geomagnetic storm (superstorm) began with storm sudden commencement (SSC) at 08:03 UT on 20 November 2003, as a result of the coronal mass ejection (CME) by sunspot 484 hurled into space on 18 November 2003. The geomagnetic storm attained |Dst |max=472 nT at 20:00 UT (20 November). In this paper we present the simultaneous ionospheric sounding observations, using the Canadian Advanced Digital Ionosondes (CADIs), carried out from Palmas (PAL; 10.2 S, 48.2W; dip latitude 5.5 S; a near equatorial station) and Sao Jos´e dos Campos (SJC; 23.2 S, 45.9W; dip latitude 17.6 S; station located under the crest of equatorial ionospheric anomaly), Brazil. In addition, total electron content (TEC) measurements from several GPS receiving stations in the Brazilian sector during this storm are presented. The simultaneous ionospheric sounding observations carried out at SJC and PAL, and TEC observations on 3 consecutive days viz., 19 November (quiet), 20 November (disturbed) and 21 November (recovery phase) are presented. Salient features from the ionospheric observations in the Brazilian sector during the superstorm are discussed. The difference in the observed ionospheric response at the two stations (PAL and SJC) is considerable. This is not surprising given that PAL is close to the magnetic equator and SJC is near the crest of the equatorial ionospheric anomaly (EIA). It should be pointed out that soon after the SSC (about 4 h later), the F-region critical frequency (foF2), the F-region peak height (hpF2), and variations of virtual heights at different frequencies (iso-frequency plots) all show wavelike oscillations of the F-region during daytime at both the ionospheric sounding stations. Unusual rapid uplifting of F-region at PAL was observed during both the main and recovery phases of the storm.

ResumoIonospheric responses to the major magnetic storm disturbances of October 2003 are investigated using database selected in the Brazilian and Japanese-Asian longitude sectors. Data obtained from latitudinally spaced digisondes in the equatorial and low-latitude sites in Brazil and from the Asian and Japanese ionosonde network, the total electron content data from the extensive Japanese GPS receiver chain, and magnetometer data from the Pacific equatorial electrojet stations are analyzed during the period 2831 October. Prompt penetrating (PP) dawn-dusk polar cap electric fields produce large F region plasma uplift on the dayside and eveningside, while the associated westward electric field on the nightside produces large downdraft of the F region plasma, and causes development of westward electrojet current, observed for the first time. Episodes of PP electric field effects appear to be of larger intensity over Brazil than over Asian longitudes. Equatorial anomaly, development due to undershielding as well as overshielding electric fields, was observed in the Brazilian and in the Asian sectors. Disturbance dynamo electric field causes large nighttime F layer uplifts that are modulated by strong meridional winds in both sectors. The disturbance electric field local time variation patterns are compared with the results of recent global model (MTIEGCM) simulation by Richmond et al. (2003) and validated in some cases. Transients of transequatorial winds, flipping direction from southward to northward, in the widely separated longitude sectors, were diagnosed to be present toward the final recovery phase of the storm. These results are presented and discussed in this paper.

ResumoBased on the data obtained from a network of GPS L1 band receivers deployed in Brazil, are presented here the characteristics of the 400 m ionospheric irregularities during magnetically quiet and disturbed conditions. The network is composed of 12 GPS scintillation monitors and covers the latitudinal region from the magnetic equator up to the southern crest of the Equatorial Ionization Anomaly (EIA), which is characterized by large horizontal gradients in the electron density distribution. Some results on equatorial spread-F statistics obtained from digisonde data over Cachoeira Paulista (22.41o S, 45o W, dip latitude 14.89o S) and from ionosonde data over Tucumán (64.5o W, 27o S, dip latitude 13.71o S) are also used in this work to complement the results from GPS network. The effects of local time, season, latitude, longitude, background ionization, solar cycle and magnetic activity on the ionospheric irregularities are presented. The ionospheric irregularity zonal velocities determined by magnetically east-west spaced GPS receivers are also presented. The influence of the ionospheric irregularities on GPS based navigational systems is discussed. These observations, complemented by computational simulations, may improve our understanding of the factors responsible for the generation, growth and dynamics of the equatorial F-region plasma irregularities.

ResumoThis paper presents an investigation of geomagnetic storm effects in the equatorial and low latitude F-region in the Brazilian sector during the intense geomagnetic storm on 18 August, 2003 (SSC 14:21 UT on 17/08; ÓKp = 52+; Ap = 108; Dstmax = 168 at 1600 UT on 18/08). Simultaneous ionospheric sounding measurements from two stations, viz., Palmas (10.2°S, 48.2°W; dip latitude 5.7°S) and Sao Jose dos Campos (23.2°S, 45.9°W; dip latitude 17.6°S), Brazil, are presented for the nights of 1617, 1718 and 1819 August, 2003 (quiet, disturbed and recovery phases). Both stations are equipped with the Canadian Advanced Digital Ionosonde (CADI). Quiet and disturbed conditions of the F-region ionosphere are compared using data collected from the two stations. The relationship between magnetospheric disturbance and low-latitude ionospheric dynamics, and generation of ionospheric irregularities are discussed. On the disturbed nights (1718 and 1819 August), the low latitude station S. J. Campos showed strong enhancements in the F-region critical frequency (foF2), whereas the near equatorial station Palmas showed strong uplifting of the F-layer about 1 h earlier. Normally during the June solstice months (MayAugust) in the Brazilian sector, large-scale ionospheric irregularities in form of plasma bubbles are rarely observed. On the night of 1718 August, ionsospheric sounding observations at Palmas showed the presence of bottomside spread-F, whereas on the night of 1819 August, the observations at Palmas and S. J. Campos showed the presence of plasma bubbles when the storm recovery phase had just started. The complementary GPS data available from several stations in the Rede Brasileira de Monitoramento Continuo de GPS (Brazilian Network for Continuous GPS Monitoring) are used to obtain the vertical total electron content (VTEC) and the rate of change of TEC per minute on UT days 18 and 19 August, 2003 and presented. Also, several global ionospheric TEC maps from the worldwide network of GPS receivers are presented, showing widespread latitudinal and longitudinal TEC changes during the different phases of the storm. All the observations (local ionospheric sounding and GPS network measurements, and global GPS measurements) presented in this investigation related to the geomagnetic storm on 18 August indicate that the equatorial and low latitude region in the Brazilian sector had much stronger effect during the recovery phase compared with the main phase. A comparison of the observed disturbance drifts with the FejerScherliess storm-time model drifts indicate that the modeled drifts are not consistent with the present observations.

ResumoThe O(1S) (green line) night airglow emission in response to atmospheric gravity wave (AGW) perturbations was simulated with a linear, one-dimensional model. The results were combined with previously modeled O2(b, 01) atmospheric band and OH Meinel band emission response (Liu and Swenson, 2003) to derive amplitude and phase relations among multiple airglow layers in response to gravity waves with various intrinsic parameters and damping rates (β). The simulations show that the vertical profile of the standard deviation of the perturbed green line volume emission rate (VER) has a centroid altitude that is 3 km lower and a full-width-half-maximum 2.1 km smaller than the unperturbed VER profile, similar to findings for the OH and O2(b) band layers. Relative phase differences and amplitudes of vertically propagating waves can be deduced from zenith observations of the layers. Airglow weighted responses to waves are related through a cancellation factor (CF) for both layer intensity and temperature. The vertical wavelength can be deduced from relative phase information of three airglow layers separated in altitude. The vertical flux of horizontal momentum associated with gravity waves is deduced from intrinsic wave parameters. Wave damping versus altitude is used to deduce the flux divergence and local accelerations resulting from dissipative waves. The simulations are useful in calculating wave information and wave effects on the atmosphere from multiwavelength, zenith airglow observations.

ResumoIn the equatorial atmosphere, oscillations with periods of 3 to 4 days have been observed in the meteor radar zonal wind at Cariri (7.4°S, 36.5°W), in the ionospheric minimum virtual height h'F and the maximum critical frequency foF2 at Fortaleza (3.9°S, 38.4°W), and in the TIMED/SABER satellite temperature data in the stratosphere-mesosphere. Wavelet analyses of these time series reveal that the 34-day oscillation was observed for all of these data during the period from March 1 to 11, 2005. From the characteristics of the downward phase propagation (wavelength of ∼40 km), longitudinal and latitudinal extension, we conclude that this oscillation must be a 3.5day Ultra Fast Kelvin (UFK) wave. This is the first report of clear evidence of propagation of a UFK wave from the stratosphere to the ionosphere. The UFK wave could have an important role in the day-to-day variability of the equatorial ionosphere evening uplift.

ResumoThis paper presents first observations of plasma blobs ( localized plasma density enhancements) associated with large-scale plasma density depletions ( plasma bubbles) in the nighttime low-latitude F-region during a major geomagnetic disturbance. Ground-based observations of the OI 630 nm all-sky images obtained at Cachoeira Paulista (22.7 degrees S, 45.0 degrees W), Brazil, in the Appleton anomaly region, showed the presence of plasma blobs during the major geomagnetic storm of April 6 - 7, 2000 (Sigma Kp = 38 -/ 40+; \Dst\(max) = 288 nT). The OI 630 nm emission images were used to map the spatial and temporal locations of plasma blobs and bubbles in the bottomside of the F-region. The F-region parameters, presented in this work, were obtained from ionosondes operating near the same site and also at Sao Luis (2.6 degrees S, 44.4 degrees W), Brazil. Ionospheric plasma blobs and bubbles zonal drift velocities, measured by the all-sky imaging system, showed that both the plasma blobs and the bubbles moved westward ( normally the plasma drift is eastward during nighttime) on this magnetically disturbed night. Furthermore, the plasma blobs showed typically east-west and north-south extensions in the range of 110 160 km and 200 - 450 km, respectively. It appears that the DMSP-15 satellite, orbiting at about 850 km altitude, passed through one of the blobs detected by the ground-based observations on this night while crossing the Brazilian sector. This indicates the enormous altitude extent [ from about 275 km ( OI 630.0 nm emission) to 850 km ( DMSP satellite) altitude] of the localized plasma density enhanced regions. In this work, we present and discuss several features related to the dynamics of the localized plasma density enhancements and large-scale plasma density depletions during this major geomagnetic disturbance.

ResumoA lidar has been operated in São José dos Campos, Brazil (23.2°S, 45.8°W) since 1972, mainly dedicated to the study of mesospheric sodium at the 589 nm resonant line. The molecular Rayleigh scattering can also be used since we limit the height to ~ 75k m where the sodium scattering begins. Nevertheless, the weak signal obtained only permits the determination of density and temperature profiles by accumulating a large number of shots giving only nocturnal average profiles. Temporal variations in density and temperature on the scale of hours can, however, be obtained by performing a superposed epoch analysis for a determined time interval and covering a period of several days. In this way we obtained hourly mean profiles grouped by months, seasons and overall, with data acquired from 1993 to 2004. The difference between the hourly temperatures and the nocturnal means show for some months, with enough data coverage, downward propagating structures that apparently have tidal origin. The seasonal averages show a recurrent feature with high temperatures before and low temperatures after midnight above 50 km. Some similarity is found with the GSWM model, but the observed temperatures amplitudes are twice of that for the model.
