ResumoThe main scientific objective of this research is to study the spatial variability and dynamics of the F-region irregularities. To achieve this, amplitude scintillations at the L-band, total electron content (TEC) and irregularity drifts were measured, as part of the Conjugate Point Equatorial Experiment (COPEX) campaign, by a network of ground-based global positioning system (GPS) receivers. The observations reveal a strong variability in the evolution of the irregularities from the equator to low-latitudes, and their zonal velocities at conjugate sites present a decrease with local time, and also with latitude. Moreover, the scintillations appear to be correlated with strong TEC gradients in the equatorward edge of the enhanced equatorial anomaly peaks. Other relevant aspects of the observations are highlighted and discussed.

ResumoDigisonde ionograms recorded in Brazil during the COPEX campaign of 2002 have been analyzed to determine the diurnal variations of the F2 peak parameters (foF2, hmF2 and the Chapman scale height, Hm) for the three COPEX stations, Boa Vista, Cachimbo and Campo Grande. Values of foF2 were derived at 15-min intervals for UT days 278298. The autoscaled F2 traces for all ionograms recorded on several days were modified manually as required and then used to derive the F2 peak parameters. The Cachimbo ionograms have also been analyzed to determine the post-sunset vertical drifts and the occurrence of spread F echoes at the magnetic equator. Spread F occurred on 90% of the nights at all three sites, limiting the number of ionograms that provide well-defined peak parameters during these conditions. The ionograms provide a wealth of details not previously reported for equatorial locations, and not predicted by current models of the equatorial ionosphere. In this paper, we discuss the correlation between the observed vertical drifts and the occurrence of spread F echoes, describe the short-term variability of the three peak parameters, and provide brief interpretations of this variability in terms of the processes that control plasma production and transport.

ResumoUsing the technique developed by Gardner and Voelz [1987. Lidar studies of the nighttime sodium layer over Urbana, Illinois, 2. Gravity waves. Journal of Geophysical Research 92, 46734693] and a new method proposed by us, two groups of gravity wave parameters are extracted from 11 years sodium lidar measurements made at a southern low-latitude location. The wave occurrence frequencies, wave parameter distributions, and wave parameter relationships are given and compared with other lidar observations. The different lidar derived results can be attributed to different atmospheric parameters. The characteristics of these two groups of gravity waves are also compared, as well as that predicted by diffusive filtering theory, and we find the gravity wave relationships derived from our method are in better agreement with diffusive filtering theory predictions.

ResumoVertical coupling in the low latitude atmosphere-ionosphere system driven by the 5-day Rossby W1 and 6-day Kelvin E1 waves in the low latitude MLT region has been investigated. Three different types of data were analysed in order to detect and extract the ~6-day wave signals. The NCEP geopotential height and zonal wind data at two pressure levels, 30 and 10 hPa, were used to explore the features of the ~6-day waves present in the stratosphere during the period from 1 July to 31 December 2004. The ~6-day wave activity was identified in the neutral MLT winds by radar measurements located at four equatorial and three tropical stations. The ~6-day variations in the ionospheric electric currents (registered by perturbations in the geomagnetic field) were detected in the data from 26 magnetometer stations situated at low latitudes. The analysis shows that the global ~6-day Kelvin E1 and ~6-day Rossby W1 waves observed in the low latitude MLT region are most probably vertically propagating from the stratosphere. The global ~6-day W1 and E1 waves seen in the ionospheric electric currents are caused by the simultaneous ~6-day wave activity in the MLT region. The main forcing agent in the equatorial MLT region seems to be the waves themselves, whereas in the tropical MLT region the modulated tides are also of importance.

ResumoThe Conjugate Point Equatorial Experiment (COPEX) was conducted in Brazil from October to December 2002. The observational instruments were placed at three sites nearly along a magnetic meridian, one at the magnetic equator and the other two at magnetically conjugate points. We analyzed the spread F (SF) occurrence and sporadic E (Es) layer characteristics in the simultaneous data to look for any possible relation between these two phenomena. The present study does not detect any significant correlation between the SF occurrence/generation at the magnetic equator and the presence of Es layers at the conjugate E regions along the same field line. The integrated field line conductivity is not significantly affected by the occurrence of Es at the conjugate E regions and its presence is not sufficient to inhibit the vertical drift and SF generation at the magnetic equator. Model results show that the presence of a vertical equatorial electric field (associated with the eastward electric field pre-reversal enhancement) is too week to affect the Es development at the conjugate stations.

ResumoThe Spread F Experiment, or SpreadFEx, was performed from September to November 2005 to define the potential role of neutral atmosphere dynamics, primarily gravity waves propagating upward from the lower atmosphere, in seeding equatorial spread F (ESF) and plasma bubbles extending to higher altitudes. A description of the SpreadFEx campaign motivations, goals, instrumentation, and structure, and an overview of the results presented in this special issue, are provided by Fritts et al. (2008a). The various analyses of neutral atmosphere and ionosphere dynamics and structure described in this special issue provide enticing evidence of gravity waves arising from deep convection in plasma bubble seeding at the bottomside F layer. Our purpose here is to employ these results to estimate gravity wave characteristics at the bottomside F layer, and to assess their possible contributions to optimal seeding conditions for ESF and plasma instability growth rates. We also assess expected tidal influences on the environment in which plasma bubble seeding occurs, given their apparent large wind and temperature amplitudes at these altitudes. We conclude 1) that gravity waves can achieve large amplitudes at the bottomside F layer, 2) that tidal winds likely control the orientations of the gravity waves that attain the highest altitudes and have the greatest effects, 3) that the favored gravity wave orientations enhance most or all of the parameters influencing plasma instability growth rates, and 4) that gravity wave and tidal structures acting together have an even greater potential impact on plasma instability growth rates and plasma bubble seeding..

ResumoIn an earlier study of sporadic sodium layers (Nas) [Simonich, D.M., Clemesha B.R., Batista, P.P. Sporadic layers and the vertical distribution of atmospheric sodium. Adv. Space Res. 35, 19761980, 2005], observed by lidar at São José do Campos (23°S, 46°W) we found that, although individual profiles give the impression that Nas layers involve sodium additional to the normal background layer, there is very little difference between the long-term averages of profiles with and without the presence of Nas. This led us to conclude that Nas layers result from the redistribution of an omnipresent source, rather than an additional source mechanism. We have now extended this study to investigate whether or not the relative magnitude of Nas layers influences this conclusion. To this end we manually characterized all the profiles obtained in the time interval from 1900 to 2200 LT for the years 19932004. This involved registering the upper and lower limits to each Nas layer observed, the height of the peak and the sodium concentration at each of these three points. We then computed average profiles for Nas layers of differing strengths, with strength defined as the concentration at the peak divided by the mean of the concentrations at the upper and lower boundaries. For strengths up to 4 the results confirmed our earlier conclusion but for Nas layer strengths greater than 4 we found a significant difference between the average profiles with and without Nas. For the strong Nas layers both the average abundance and the average peak sodium concentration were about 10% greater than for layers without Nas. This leads to the possibility that a different mechanism might be responsible for very stronger sporadic layers although we do not think this very likely.

ResumoDust particles of meteoric origin in the lower E-region can affect the conductivity parameters by varying the effective collision frequency and by causing electron bite outs through the capture of ambient electrons. In magnetized plasma, neutral dust particles can alter the effective collision frequency parameters and thus affect the Pedersen and Hall conductivities in the electrojet region. The Cowling conductivity profile is determined by the height profiles of the Hall and Pedersen conductivities. The collision parameters altered by the neutral dust particles can be considerably different from those estimated from atmospheric models, in the lower E-region heights where dust particles of meteoric origin are known to exist in large numbers. A significant fraction of these dust particles may capture free electrons from the ambient medium and get charged negatively. This can result in reduction in the number density of free electrons especially below the electrojet peak where the dust particles can be present in large numbers, at least on days of large meteor showers. This, in turn, can once again alter the vertical profile of the eastwest Hall current driven by the vertical Hall polarization field and under favorable conditions, can even account for the reversal of the electrojet currents below the current peak. Assuming a realistic model for the distribution of neutral dust particles, the conductivity parameters are estimated here. Conditions under which the dust particles can cause partial reversals in the electrojet currents are critically examined here.

ResumoMesospheric winds observed with a meteor radar at Cariri (7.4 degrees S, 36.5 degrees W), Brazil, during the period of July 2004 to June 2005, show a clear semiannual oscillation known as the Mesospheric Semiannual Oscillation (MSAO), which maximizes in the zonal mean wind mainly at 82 km, with amplitude decreasing with height. Maximum westward winds for the MSAO occurred in March and September. The meridional wind, on the other hand, presented a clear annual variation maximizing in December. On average, the amplitude of the meridional MSAO, was smaller than the zonal MSAO component. Comparison with models shows on occasions that there are significant differences between the observed winds and the CIRA (Cospar International Reference Atmosphere) and HWM93 (Horizontal Wind Model) models. In addition, diurnal and semidiurnal parameters were calculated and compared to the GSWM model. Other results observed during one year of data are presented in this work.

ResumoLower-mesospheric inversion layers (MILs) were studied using the temperature profiles observed by TIMED/SABER over Cariri (7.5°S, 36.5°W), Brazil, in 2005. A total 175 MILs were identified with the maximum occurrence in April and October and the minimum in January and July. The lower MIL is located in a height region from 70 to 90 km, with the peak at around 83 ± 4 km with the temperature of 205 ± 5 K, and the thickness of 410 km. The results show large amplitudes of MILs during equinoxes and minimum in solstices, with a clear semiannual variation. A general feature of lower MIL in monthly mean profile was observed twice a year, one from February to May, and the other from August to October with a downward shift of the top level. These results suggest that formation and long persistence of MIL is an important factor to investigate propagation of atmospheric gravity waves in the mesosphere-lower thermosphere (MLT) region.
