ResumoIn solar cycles 22-23, all solar indices showed maxima near 1990 and 2000 and minima in 1996. The maximum to minimum variation was only ~1-2% in the UV range 240-350 nm. Dobson ozone intensities did not show any clear relationship with solar cycle and ozone variations were less than 10 percent. The UV-B (295-325 nm) observed at ground by Brewer spectrophotometers at some locations had variations of similar to 50-100% for 295-300 nm, and similar to 20-50% for 305-325 nm. The maxima were in different years at different locations (even with separations of only similar to 300 km), did not match with the solar cycle, and were far too large to be explained on the basis of ozone changes (1 decrease of ozone is expected to cause ~2% increase of UV-B). Thus, if the data are not bad, the UV-B changes do not match with solar activity or ozone changes and must be mostly due to other local effects (clouds, etc.?). When data are averaged over wide geographical regions, UV-B variation ranges are smaller (~10-20%, probably because localised, highly varying cloud effects get filtered out), and are roughly as expected from ozone variations.

ResumoWe agree with Sonnemann (2001) about the di8culty involved in a statistical analysis like the present one. Indeed, the in;uence of the earths atmosphere on the strength of the geomagnetic activity, as a cause for the deviation of the observed annual variation from the seasonal pattern, should not be disregarded.

ResumoThe dominant interplanetary phenomena that are frequently associated with intense magnetic storms are the interplanetary manifestations of fast coronal mass ejections (CMEs). Two such interplanetary structures, involving an intense and long duration Bs component of the IMF are: the sheath region behind a fast forward interplanetary shock, and the CME ejecta itself. Frequently, these structures lead to the development of intense storms with two-step growth in their main phases. These structures, when combined, lead sometimes to the development of very intense storms, especially when an additional interplanetary shock is found in the sheath plasma of the primary structure accompanying another stream. The second stream can also compress the primary cloud, intensifying the Bs field, and bringing with it an additional Bs structure. Thus, at times very intense storms are associated with three or more Bs structures. Another aspect that can contribute to the development of very intense storms refers to the recent finding that magnetic clouds with very intense core magnetic fields tend to have large velocities, thus implying large amplitude interplanetary electric fields that can drive very intense magnetospheric energization.

ResumoFluxes of Rn-222 from the ice-free terrain to the atmosphere were measured directly, for the first time, at the Brazilian Antartic Station Ferraz during the summer field campaign of 1998/99. Average value for the flux was 7.7 +/- 4.8x10(-2)atoms cm(-2)s(-1)and it ranged between 0.21x10(-2)atoms cm(-2)s(-1)and 28x10(-2)atoms cm(-2)s(-1). The average flux of Rn-220 was estimated to be 23 atoms cm(-2)s(-1), using a combination of two techniques: nuclear track detection and alpha spectrometry of radon daughters. It was found that the production of radon by uranium (41.54 +/- 7.17 Bq kg(-1)) and thorium (57.97 +/- 12.14 Bq kg(-1)) equivalent soil contents, and a diffusion coefficient derived from experimental data for the local terrain could account for this average flux. Nevertheless, the large surges of Rn-222 in the atmosphere frequently observed for that area could not be-explained by this flux only.

ResumoTraveling convection vortices (TCVs)are transient events in high-latitude ground magnetograms that can be interpreted as evidence for localized vortical flows in the highlatitude ionosphere. Their centers travel eastward or westward at geomagnetic latitudes near 72degrees to 74degrees. TCVs have been attributed to various transient interactions at the magnetopause but also to processes occurring deeper within the magnetosphere. Each interaction mechanism should launch shear Alfven waves that produce high-latitude ground signatures but also compressional waves that should produce signatures at lower latitudes. Zesta et al. [1999], Moretto et al. [1997], Ridley et al. [1998], and Luhr et al. [1998]report detailed analyses for several high-latitude TCVs. In this paper, we present evidence for corresponding signatures at Belem, Sao Luis, and Teresina and other stations under or nearby the equatorial electrojet. The equatorial signatures are most pronounced when the high-latitude signatures are (1)longitudinally extended, (2)isolated, and (3)attain greatest amplitudes.

ResumoAn investigation of interior crisis of high dimensions in an extended spatiotemporal system exemplified by the Kuramoto-Sivashinsky equation is reported. It is shown that unstable periodic orbits and their associated invariant manifolds in the Poincare' hyperplane can effectively characterize the global bifurcation dynamics of high-dimensional systems.

ResumoAn experiment was designed to measure ozone at a site on the Andes Mountains, near La Paz, Bolivia, at a height of 3420 m, with the objective of investigating the ozone reduction seen over the mountains and the increased UV-B radiation. A Brewer spectrophotometer was used for surface measurements of the vertical ozone column and UV-B radiation; the spatial ozone variation around the mountain site was obtained using Total Ozone Mapping Spectrometer (TOMS) data. The ozone column values show a decrease over the mountain region, which maximizes at about 20 Dobson units, in comparison to the values in the Pacific regions, to the west, and the continental values to the east, at about the same latitude. To investigate the reason for this missing ozone, the vertical ozone distribution was measured using electrochemical concentration cell ozonesondes. The ozone profiles were integrated downward to sea level. It is shown that this integral corresponds to the missing ozone over the mountain area. The strongest consequence of the reduced atmosphere at high altitude on the UV-B intensities is not the reduction of the ozone column but that of the Rayleigh-scattering effect. The absence of scattering considerably increases the UV-B radiation at high altitudes. For example, the ozone effect on the ratios of UV-B intensities between La Paz and Natal, a sea level station, is only 1.15, while for the Rayleigh-scattering reduction, the ratio between stations is 1.75, at 306.3 nm. Measured UV-B intensities at both sites show La Paz/Natal ratios of this order of magnitude.

ResumoFor a set of I I magnetic cloud events, the time-integrated values of the injection function necessary to observe variations in the Dst index at levels of -50, -75, -100, -125 and -150 nT have been estimated. A study of the average values of magnetic clouds with different polarity has shown that the subset of magnetic clouds with N-S polarity has time-integrated values greater than those for magnetic clouds with S-N polarity. This result agrees with a model calculation.

ResumoIn this work we calculate the magnetic field parameters for two stream-interacting magnetic clouds using Burlaga's model and compare with their observed magnetic field behavior. Presumably the model does not take into account the effects of interaction between the magnetic cloud and the high speed stream, so we could estimate quantitatively the increase in the peak Dst value due to this interaction. For this purpose, the observed Dst was used together with the Dst values calculated with the modified Burton formula, using as input the observed parameters and the parameters obtained by Burlaga's model. Our results show that the peak Dst value can be increased from (at least) 60 to 100 nT due to the interaction between the magnetic cloud and the high speed stream overtaking it.
