ResumoA study of the daily values of the 10.7 cm (2800 MHz, F 10) solar radio flux revealed fluctuations with peak spacings in a very wide range (~ 13-40 days). There can be multiple reasons for such a wide range. Amongst these, there is a possibility that the dominant radiance within an active region may move rapidly forward or backward with respect to the solar surface, to give spacings different from ~ 27 days (solar rotation period). This needs to be checked with an actual image analysis. An earlier conclusion by Pap et al. (Solar Phys. (1990) 165) that 27-day solar rotation is more pronounced in the declining phase of a solar cycle, seems to be true for cycles 22-23 also. However, during any year, the magnitudes of the 27-day oscillation can vary by more than a factor of two from one oscillation to another.

ResumoThe periodic structure in the time series of a number of solar indices is examined for the interval 1992-2000. The de-trended values of the 27-day moving averages of various solar indices indicated substantial oscillations (ranges up to 35% or more), but the spacings in successive peaks varied considerably (100-600 days). A spectral analysis indicated prominent peaks at ~ 360 and 670 days, with minor peaks at 120-230 days. The ranges (peak to trough) were large (15-20%) for solar indices sunspots and magnetic fields, but very small (1-3%) for lines in lower chromosphere, increasing to ~ 10% in the middle and upper chromosphere, decreasing (~ 5%) in the lower transition region, rising rapidly (up to 35%) in the middle corona, and decreasing thereafter to ~ 20%. The peaks at different solar altitudes generally tallied, indicating that the structures spread above the photosphere into the chromosphere and corona in phase, though the magnitudes were different at different altitudes.

ResumoA seven-year study of negative cloud-to-ground (CG) lightning flash characteristics in southeastern Brazil is presented. The study is based on approximately 10 million flashes recorded by a Lightning Position and tracking system lightning detection network from November 1988 to December 1995. The data set is the longest ever obtained in the tropics using an almost constant network configuration. It provides a unique opportunity to study the long-term annual, monthly, and local time distributions of the number, intensity (peak current) and multiplicity of negative CG flashes in the tropics. The annual distribution of the number of flashes has variations as large as 80%. The variations does not show any clear relationship with any meteorological parameter, possibly indicating the complex interactions of different processes responsible for the lightning activity. The monthly and local time distributions seem to follow closely the related distributions of air temperature. The annual distribution of peak current shows an average value of 40.4 kA and has a significant decrease from 1991 to 1994, apparently related to an El Nino seasonal effect. The monthly distribution of peak current shows lower values in the winter, in contrast with the results recently reported for the United States, and seems to be related to the monthly distribution of the number of flashes. The local time distribution of the peak current seems also to be related to the local time distribution of the number of flashes; however, the dependency is less evident. The annual distribution of multiplicity has a systematic decrease during the period, with no apparent relationship with any of the variables studied. The monthly distribution of multiplicity is consistent with the hypothesis that the multiplicity is related to the average height of thunderstorms. The local time distribution of multiplicity, in turn, shows a sunrise/sunset effect. The results are compared to similar ones obtained in other regions of the world.

ResumoThis paper presents the results about the time interval between return strokes and K-changes of negative cloud-to-ground lightning flashes in Brazil based on millisecond scale observations of electric field waveforms. They were obtained in Sao Jose dos Campos (45.864degreesW, 23.215degreesS), Brazil, in the period from October 1998 to February 1999. It was found that the interstroke time interval has an average value of 69.0 ms, a geometric mean value of 49.6 ms and does not depend on the return stroke order. The time interval between K-changes has an average value of 18.5 ms, a geometric mean value of 12.0 ms, and also does not depend on the return stroke order in which they occur between. These values are in reasonable agreement with the values obtained in other regions of the world.

ResumoIn this work we present a methodology to estimate the geomagnetic symmetric index (Sym) based on the wavelet analysis of the time series of the H component of the geomagnetic field measured at mid-latitude stations localized at Kakioka (KAK), Honolulu (HON), Hermanus (HER) and San Juan (SJG). A case study of the intense geomagnetic storm of 17-22 February 1999, caused by intense southward magnetic fields just behind an interplanetary shock driven by a magnetic cloud, is shown as an example of the procedure of derivation of the symmetric index and the capabilities of this analysis to improve the study of the coupling of the solar wind and the Earth's magnetosphere. Other examples are shown in order to demonstrate the applicability of the methodology to different magnetospheric conditions. It is shown that the long period variations of the symmetric index are linearly correlated to variations at the same periods of the H component of the geomagnetic field and that the contribution of short period variations to the symmetric index are biased by localized current systems such as the partial ring current and the field aligned currents.

ResumoWe present a theory of the fundamental plasma emission of type-III solar radio bursts. Starting from the generalized Zakharov equations, considering the pump wave as a pair of oppositely propagating Langmuir waves with di®erent amplitudes, and the excitation of electromagnetic and induced Langmuir waves, we obtain a general dispersion relation for the coupled waves. We numerically solve the general dispersion relation using the pump wave amplitude and plasma parameters observed in the interplanetary medium.

ResumoIntracloud and cloud-to-ground (CG) lightning data in the North and Southeast regions of Brazil are compared based on observations from 01 October 1999 to 13 April 2000. The observations were made by ground networks and the Lightning Imaging Sensor (LIS) on board the TRMM satellite. For the whole period of observation, a detailed comparative analysis indicates that the cloud-to-ground lightning activity in the North region is about 20% higher than that in the Southeast for a similar size area, while the percentage of intracloud flashes is almost the same in both regions ( similar to60-65%). On a 49-day basis (to avoid the local time bias in the LIS data), the same analysis indicates that the lightning activity recorded by LIS is representative of the CG lightning activity detected by the lightning networks, either in the same time and space seen by the satellite sensor, or in the area of the study. It was also found that the percentage of positive CG flashes in the North region is correlated to the percentage of intracloud flashes.

ResumoThe Brazilian lightning detection network detected about 310,000 cloud-to-ground flashes over three large metropolitan areas in Southeastern Brazil during three summer seasons (from 2000 to 2002). It was observed an enhancement of 60100% in the flash density over the urban areas compared to their surroundings. Conversely, a decrease of 78% in the percentage of positive flashes was also observed. The spatial distribution of the flashes follows closely the shape of the São Paulo city heat island, thereby supporting the thermal hypothesis. The PM10 concentration showed a positive linear correlation with the number of cloud-to-ground flashes and a negative correlation with the percentage of positive flashes, supporting the aerosol hypothesis. These results indicate that both hypotheses should be considered to explain the CG lightning enhancements over the urban areas. However, only the aerosol hypothesis could better support the decrease of the percentage of positive flashes.

ResumoPercentage changes in Nm, i.e., in (foF2) should be the same as percentage changes in solar EUV. If there is a mismatch, it would be attributed to the contributions to Nm of other factors like neutral density, temperature, composition, neutral winds and electric fields, all of which vary with solar EUV. For the AE-E data of 19771981, the (foF2)2 values at several locations increased from 1.0 (base level for January 1978) to a peak value ratio of ∼2.0 in 1980, while the integrated flux for 18910 Å appropriate for foF2 changes was ∼ 2.00, just enough for causing the observed foF2 changes. Thus, during 19781980, the contribution from other factors must be small, though for the longer interval 19761980, Richards [2001] reported substantial contribution from other factors. Since 1996, SEM/SOHO has made EUV measurements in the 260340 Å range. From the solar minimum in 1996 to the solar maximum in 2000, this EUV increased by a factor of only 2.4, but the (foF2)2 at several locations have increased by a factor of 3.0 or more. Thus, in cycle 23, the contribution of other factors to Nm increase must have been substantial. In 27-day sequences of EUV, (foF2)2 did not always show similar fluctuations.
