ResumoGravitational capture is a characteristic of some dynamical systems in celestial mechanics, as in the elliptic restricted three-body problem that is considered in this paper. The basic idea is that a spacecraft (or any particle with negligible mass) can change a hyperbolic orbit with a small positive energy around a celestial body in an elliptic orbit with a small negative energy without the use of any propulsive system. The force responsible for this modification in the orbit of the spacecraft is the gravitational force of the third body involved in the dynamics. In this way, this force is used as a zero cost control, equivalent to a continuous thrust applied in the spacecraft. One of the most important applications of this property is the construction of trajectories to the Moon. The objective of the present paper is to study in some detail the effects of the eccentricity of the primaries in this maneuver.

ResumoAt the present time the search for the knowledge of our Solar System continues effective. So, in July 1st, 2004, the international Cassini-Huygens Mission spacecraft entered into orbit around the planet Saturn and at the present time (January, 2005) it is sending data from the Huygens probe, which is studying Saturn's largest moon, Titan. NASAs Solar System Exploration theme listed a Neptune mission as one of its top priorities for the mid-term (2008-2013). The gravity assist is a proven technique in interplanetary exploration, as exemplified by the missions Voyager, Galileo, Cassini etc. Here a mission to Neptune for the mid-term (2008-2020) is proposed. Making the continuation of our previous work, the following schemes are analyzed: EarthJupiterNeptune, EarthVenusEarthJupiterNeptune, EarthVenus EarthJupiterSaturnNeptune. All the transfers are optimized in terms of the ∆V (characteristic velocity), in order to find a good compromise between the ∆V and time of flight to Neptune.

ResumoNowadays, attitude control systems (ACS) of satellites demand better performance, resulting in the application of new advanced nonlinear control theory. In this paper, a nonlinear control law for a satellite attitude control is presented. It is based on an extension of the linear quadratic regulator (LQR) theory. The control law designed by this technique comprehends two parts: the first one based on the linear equations of motion and the second one based on the nonlinear equations of motion. From simulations, one observes that the extension of the LQR theory has improved the control system performance.

ResumoThe objective of this work is to present a new algebraic solution for the problem of remote determination of geographic coordinates of a target, using a new remote geopositioning system being developed in Brazil. It can be useful for double-check measurements obtained with other methods, for certain critical applications, being capable to perform independently from them. This system requires three-reference bases on the surface of the earth with synchronized clocks and a repeater in space. Calculations are derived from measurements of propagation time of clock signal transmitted by one base to all bases and target, via a transponder in space. The algorithm also provides the "instantaneous" determination of the repeater position in space and brings other applications in navigation and remote clock synchronization. The algorithm has been successfully tested through computational software.

gravitational capture
ResumoGravitational capture is the phenomenon where a particle, coming from outside the sphere of influence of another body, may have its velocity relative to the celestial body reduced and it can even stay in orbit around it temporarily, using only gravitational forces. This happens due to the change of the two-body energy of the massless body from positive to negative relative to one of the primaries of the restricted three-body problem. The two-body energy is constant in the two-body problem, but not in the three-body problem, where this energy is not conserved due to the perturbation of the third body. The importance of this study is that the results can be used to decrease the fuel expenditure for a mission going from one of the primaries to the other, like an Earth-Moon mission. This is performed by applying an impulse to the spacecraft during the temporary capture to accomplish a permanent capture. The application of this phenomenon in spacecraft trajectories is recent in the literature. The first demonstration of this was in 1987 (Belbruno [1]). Further studies include Belbruno [2, 3]; Krish [4]; Krish, Belbruno, and Hollister [5]; Miller and Belbruno [6];Belbruno and Miller [7, 8]. They all studied missions in the Earth-Moon system that use this technique to save fuel during the insertion of the spacecraft in its final orbit around the Moon. Another set of papers that made fundamental contributions in this field, also with the main objective of constructing real trajectories in the Earth-Moon system, are those of Yamakawa, Kawaguchi, Ishii, and Matsuo (see references [9][12]). The first real application of a ballistic capture transfer was made during an emergency in a Japanese spacecraft [13]. After that, some studies that consider the time required for this transfer appeared in the literature. Examples of this approach can be found in the papers by Vieira-Neto and Prado [14, 15]. The references related to the gravitational capture for the elliptic case, like Bailey [16, 17, 18] and Heppenheimer [19], do not use the variation of the two-body energy as done in this paper.

ResumoIn this paper, a study is made in the problem of the orbital control of an Earth´s satellite using the gravity of the Moon. The main objective is to study a technique to decrease the fuel consumption of a plane change maneuver to be performed in a satellite that is in orbit around the Earth. The main idea of this approach is to send the spacecraft to the Moon using a single impulsive maneuver, use the gravity field of the Moon to make the desired plane change of the trajectory, and then return the spacecraft to its nominal semi-major axis and eccentricity using a bi-impulsive Hohmann type maneuver. The spacecraft is assumed to start in a circular orbit in the plane of the lunar orbit around the Earth and the goal is to put it in a similar orbit that differs from the initial orbit only by the inclination. A description of the close approach maneuver is made in the threedimensional space. Analytical equations based in the patched conics approximation are used to calculate the variation in velocity, angular momentum, energy and inclination of the spacecraft that realizes this maneuver. Then, several simulations are made to evaluate the savings involved.

ResumoThis paper is concerned with trajectories to transfer a spacecraft between the Lagrangian points of the Sun-Earth system and the primaries. The Lagrangian points have important applications in astronautics, since they are equilibrium points of the equation of motion and very good candidates to locate a satellite or a space station. The planar circular restricted three-body problem in two dimensions is used as the model for the Sun-Earth system, and Lamaître regularization is used to avoid singularities during the numerical integration required to solve the Lambert's three-body problem. The results show families of transfer orbits, parameterized by the transfer time.

ResumoThis paper presents a survey on space trajectories in the circular restricted three-body problem. In this situation, a spacecraft moves under the gravitational forces of two bodies, which are assumed to be in circular orbits. First of all, there is a search for orbits that can be used to transfer a spacecraft from one body back to the same body or to transfer a spacecraft from one body to the respective Lagrangian points L4 and L5. The method employed is to solve the Two-Point Boundary Value Problem. The close approach between the spacecraft and the celestial bodies involved is also studied in the three-dimensional space. Then, the gravitational capture is studied. It is a characteristic of some dynamical systems, like the three- or four-body system, where a hyperbolic orbit around a celestial body can be transformed in an elliptic orbit without the use of any propulsive system.

restricted four-body problem
ResumoThe objective of this paper is to study the problem of gravitational capture in the bicircular restricted four-body problem. A gravitational capture occurs when a massless particle changes its two-body energy around one celestial body from positive to negative without the use of non-gravitational forces. It is mainly studied the effect of the fourth-body included in the dynamics. The Earth-Moon system with the inclusion of the Sun is used for the numerical simulations. The results show the savings obtained in this more realistic model when compared with the more traditional restricted three-body problem model. It is clear that large savings are obtained thanks to the effect of the Sun, if a proper geometry is used for the maneuver.

ResumoWe analyze the problem of the orbital control of an Earth's satellite using the gravity of the Moon. The main objective is to study a technique to decrease the fuel consumption of a plane change maneuver to be performed in a satellite that is in orbit around the Earth. The main idea of this approach is to send the satellite to the Moon using a single-impulsive maneuver, use the gravity field of the Moon to make the desired plane change of the trajectory, and then return the satellite to its nominal semimajor axis and eccentricity using a bi-impulsive Hohmann-type maneuver. The satellite is assumed to start in a Keplerian orbit in the plane of the lunar orbit around the Earth and the goal is to put it in a similar orbit that differs from the initial orbit only by the inclination. A description of the close-approach maneuver is made in the three-dimensional space. Analytical equations based on the patched conics approach are used to calculate the variation in velocity, angular momentum, energy, and inclination of the satellite. Then, several simulations are made to evaluate the savings involved. The time required by those transfers is also calculated and shown.
