ResumoThe study of the variation of the curvature of non-symmetric composite laminates with temperature provides a measure of the magnitude of the thermal stresses and the mechanical behavior of the material with temperature. In the present work, an experimental method based on the pioneer use of a digital camera and image processing method is proposed to perform such measurements. Taking advantage of the method and by comparing experimental and CLT, extended-CLT and FEM simulation results, an evaluation of the residual stresses is described and an approach providing more precise determination of the residual thermal stresses in non-symmetric laminates is proposed.

Neptune mission
ResumoAt the present time, the search for the knowledge of our Solar System continues effective. NASAs Solar System Exploration theme listed a Neptune mission as one of its top priorities for the mid-term (20082013). From the technical point of view, gravity assist is a proven technique in interplanetary exploration, as exemplified by the missions Voyager, Galileo, and Cassini. Here, a mission to Neptune for the mid-term (20082020) is proposed, with the goal of studying several schemes for the mission. A direct transfer to Neptune is considered and also Venus, Earth, Jupiter, and Saturn gravity assists are used for the transfer to Neptune, which represent new contributions for a possible real mission. We show several schemes, including or not the braking maneuver near Neptune, in order to find a good compromise between the DV and the time of flight to Neptune. After that, a study is made to take advantage of an asteroid flyby opportunity, when the spacecraft passes by the main asteroid belt. Results for a mission that makes an asteroid flyby with the asteroid 1931 TD3 is shown.

ResumoTransfers with a low thrust are considered under constraints imposed on the thrust vector direction. These constraints can be caused by peculiarities of the attitude control system and the mode of stabilization of a spacecraft, and, in the general case, they are functions of the time and state vector. The constraints specified by equalities and inequalities are investigated. It is shown that the optimal thrust is directed along the projection of the Lawden's primer vector onto the restricting set.

ResumoThis paper presents a new convergence analysis of the least mean fourth (LMF) adaptive algorithm, in the mean square sense. The analysis improves previous results, in that it is valid for non-Gaussian noise distributions and explicitly shows the dependence of algorithm stability on the initial conditions of the weights. Analytical expressions are derived presenting the relationship between the step size, the initial weight error vector, and mean-square stability. The analysis assumes a white zero-mean Gaussian reference signal and an independent, identically distributed (i.i.d.) measurement noise with any even probability density function (pdf). It has been shown by Nascimento and Bermudez ["Probability of Divergence for the Least-Mean Fourth (LMF) Algorithm," IEEE Transactions on Signal Processing, vol 54, no. 4, pp. 1376-1385, Apr. 2006], that the LMF algorithm is not mean-square stable for reference signals whose pdfs have infinite support. However, the probability of divergence as a function of the step size value tends to rise abruptly only when it moves past a given threshold. Our analysis provides a simple (and yet precise) estimate of the region of quick rise in the probability of divergence. Hence, the present analysis is useful for predicting algorithm instability in most practical applications.

ResumoA low-cost computer procedure to determine the orbit of an artificial satellite by using short arc data from an onboard GPS receiver is proposed. Pseudoranges are used as measurements to estimate the orbit via recursive least squares method. The algorithm applies orthogonal Givens rotations for solving recursive and sequential orbit determination problems. To assess the procedure, it was applied to the TOPEX/POSEIDON satellite for data batches of one orbital period (approximately two hours), and force modelling, due to the full JGM-2 gravity field model, was considered. When compared with the reference Precision Orbit Ephemeris (POE) of JPL/NASA, the results have indicated that precision better than 9 m is easily obtained, even when short batches of data are used.

ResumoLong-term mission identification and model validation for in-flight manipulator control system in almost zero gravity with hostile space environment are extremely important for robotic applications. In this paper, a robot joint mathematical model is developed where several nonlinearities have been taken into account. In order to identify all the required system parameters, an integrated identification strategy is derived. This strategy makes use of a robust version of least-squares procedure (LS) for getting the initial conditions and a general nonlinear optimization method (MCSmultilevel coordinate searchalgorithm) to estimate the nonlinear parameters. The approach is applied to the intelligent robot joint (IRJ) experiment that was developed at DLR for utilization opportunity on the International Space Station (ISS). The results using real and simulated measurements have shown that the developed algorithm and strategy have remarkable features in identifying all the parameters with good accuracy.

ResumoA gravitational capture occurs when a spacecraft (or any particle with negligible mass) changes from a hyperbolic orbit with a small positive energy around a celestial body into an elliptic orbit with a small negative energy without the use of any propulsive system. The force responsible for this modification in the orbit of the spacecraft is the gravitational force of the third and the fourth bodies involved in the dynamics. In this way, those forces are used as a zero cost control, equivalent to a continuous thrust applied in the spacecraft. One of the most important applications of this property is the construction of trajectories to the Moon to minimize fuel consumption. The concept of gravitational capture is used, together with the basic ideas of the gravity-assisted maneuver and the bi-elliptic transfer orbit, to generate a trajectory that requires fuel consumption smaller than the one required by the Hohmann transfer. The objective of the present paper is to study the time required for the ballistic gravitational capture in a dynamical model that has the presence of four bodies. In particular, the EarthMoonSunSpacecraft system is considered..

Jupiter
ResumoIn the present paper we study swing-by maneuvers that use the planet Jupiter as the body for the close approach. The main goal is to simulate a large variety of initial conditions for those orbits and study the effects caused by the close approach with Jupiter in the orbit of the spacecraft. The planar restricted circular three-body problem and the patched-conics approach are used as the mathematical models. For the planar restricted circular three-body problem, the equations are regularized (using Lemaı tres regularization), so it is possible to avoid the numerical problems that come from the close approach with Jupiter. Then, the results obtained with these well-known dynamics are compared. We see that there is a good agreement of the two models studied in the majority of the situations, but there are large discrepancies in the results of the semi-major axis when the energy before or after the passage is small. There are differences in semi-major axis larger than 10% of the SunJupiter distance in about 5% of the trajectories simulated. Differences in the order of several hundreds of the SunJupiter distances were also encountered. 2007 COSPAR. Published by Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Patched-conics approximation
ResumoIn the present paper, we present an analytical description of the powered swing-by maneuver in the three-dimensional space. To perform this task, new analytical equations are derived for the three-dimensional unpowered swing-by, including the variation in velocity, angular momentum, energy and inclination of the spacecraft due to the maneuver. This is done based on the patched-conics approximation. From those general three-dimensional equations, it is possible to confirm some well-known analytical results for the planar case. The equations developed here are verified by numerical integrations, using the restricted problem of three bodies, showing an agreement better than 1%. After that, based on those equations, some new analytical results are obtained for the situation when an impulse is applied to the spacecraft during the close approach. Those new equations are based in the assumption that the impulse applied is small compared to the velocity of the spacecraft, and they allow the calculation of the same variations cited above. Those equations can be simplified for specific cases, and it can generate some conclusions about the direction to apply the impulse to attend specific goals. A study is also executed to investigate in which cases the impulse is more efficient when applied at the periapsis of the swing-by hyperbola or at points far way from the swing-by body.
