ResumoThis study investigates the relationship between yellowfin tuna (Thunnus albacares) caught in the tropical Atlantic between 158S and 158N and 108W and 558W by the northeast Brazilian longline fleet, and environmental variables obtained from remote sensors such as sea surface temperature (AVHRR/NOAA), chlorophyll-a concentration (SeaWiFS/SeaStar), sea surface height anomaly (TOPEX/Poseidon), and wind velocity (Scatterometer/ERS-1 and -2). The observed relationships between longline catch data, expressed as catch per unit effort (CPUE), and the satellite data were analysed using the statistical method of generalized additive models (GAMs). CPUE was calculated as the number of fish caught by 100 hooks in 18 latitude by 18 longitude square grid and integrated into a month of fishing activity for the period of 19952000. Results obtained showed evidences of non-linear relationships between catch yields and environmental data. The largest CPUE of yellowfin tuna in the region seems to be strongly associated with the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) position and its temporal variability. In the model, this was confirmed by the highest correlation of CPUE with the meridional wind component. This result also indicates 58S as the southern limit for a larger concentration of this species during the most productive fishing period between March and May. In decreasing order of importance, sea surface temperature, chlorophyll-a concentration and sea surface height anomaly, albeit statistically significant, seemed to be of secondary importance in controlling this species abundance in the region.

ResumoMeasurements of reflectance spectra, total suspended solids (TSS), chlorophyll a+phaeophytin (CLH) and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) plus pH, Secchi disk transparency and water depth were made in lakes associated with the Amazons and Negro rivers upstream from Manaus. Reflectance spectra were acquired between 400 and 900 nm using a spectroradiometer with a nominal resolution of 3 nm. Two spectral band operators designed to detect the CHL signal in waters with high TSS concentrations were examined with the aid of linear and nonlinear regression methods. Results showed that none of the proposed operators were successful in Amazon white water systems.

Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI)
ResumoThis work presents results which help to understand the behaviour of the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) anomalies over the South America continent during the two strongest El Nino events of the last century (1982-1983 and 1997-1998). The data used are parts of a long-term series (July 1981 to December 1999) of calibrated NDVI data derived from National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (NOAA AVHRR) datasets. Special emphasis has been given to the analysis of the response of the major Brazilian vegetation types. This paper introduces an approach that enhances NDVI anomalies relative to the long-term climatology of the region. We find a negative NDVI anomaly for most of the region during the 1982-1983 event, whereas for the 1997-1998 event positive NDVI anomalies were observed over most regions. Only the Nordeste region showed a similar vegetation response for both events. We identify three possible factors that may play a role in the different NDVI responses to the two El Nino events. Firstly, poor intercalibration of sensors may account for some, but not all of the differences. Secondly the response of the vegetation may depend upon the climate conditions prior to the El Nino events. Thirdly, the difference in the onset date and the duration of the mature phase of the two El Nino events, associated with very different Atlantic surface temperatures are shown to have dynamical consequences which may impact upon the vegetation.

ResumoAlthough many of the current hypotheses to explain the origin and distribution of the Amazon biodiversity has been based directly or indirectly on geological data, the reconstruction of the geological history of the Amazon region is still inadequate to analyze its relationship with the biodiversity. This work has the main goal to characterize the sedimentary successions formed in the Brazilian Amazon in the Neogene- Quaternary discussing the evolution of the depositional systems through time and analyzing their main controlling mechanisms in order to fill up this gap. Radar image interpretation, sedimentological studies, and radiocarbon dating allowed the mapping of Plio-Pleistocene to Holocene units along the Solimoes-Amazonas River, Brazil. This integrated work led to the characterization of five sedimentary successions overlying Miocene deposits of the Solimoes/Pebas Formation, which include the following: Ic¸a´ Formation (Plio-Pleistocene), deposits Q1 (37,400 43,700 14C yr B.P.), deposits Q2 (27,200 14C yr B.P.), deposits Q3 (6730 2480 14C yr B.P.), and deposits Q4 (280 130 14C yr B.P.). These deposits occur mostly to the west of Manaus, forming NW SE elongated belts that are progressively younger from SW to NE, indicating a subsiding basin with a depocenter that migrated to the NE. The reconstruction of the depositional history is consistent with significant changes in the landscapes. Hence, the closure of a large lake system at the end of the Miocene gave rise to the development of a Plio-Pleistocene fluvial system. This was yet very distinct from the modern drainage, with shallow, energetic, highly migrating, braided to anastomosed channels having an overall northeast outlet. This fluvial system formed probably under climatic conditions relatively drier than todays. During the early Pleistocene, there was pronounced erosion, followed by a renewed depositional phase ca. 40,000 14C yr B.P., with the development of prograding lobes and/or crevasse splays associated with a lake system (i.e., fan-delta) and/or fluvial flood plain areas. After a period of erosion, a fluvial system with eastward draining channels started to develop at around 27,000 14C yr B.P. The fluvial channels were overflooded in mid- Holocene time. This flooding is attributed to an increased period of humidity, with a peak between 5000 and 2500 14C yr B.P. The data presented herein support that, rather than being a monotonous area, the Amazonia was a place with frequent changes in landscape throughout the Neogene-Quaternary, probably as a result of climatic and tectonic factors. We hypothesize that these changes in the physical environment stressed the biota, resulting in speciation and thus had a great impact on modern biodiversity. D 2004 University of Washington. ResumoA paleomegafauna site from central Amazonia with exceptional preservation of mastodons and ground sloths allows for the first time a precise age control based on 14C analysis, which, together with sedimentological and 13C isotope data, provided the basis to discuss habitat evolution within the context of climate change during the past 15,000 yr. The fossil-bearing deposits, trapped within a depression in the Paleozoic basement, record three episodes of sedimentation formed on floodplains, with an intermediate unit recording a catastrophic deposition through debris flows, probably favored during fast floodings. The integrated approach presented herein supports a change in humidity in central Amazonia through the past 15,000 yr, with a shift from drier to arboreal savanna at 11,340 (±50) 14C yr B.P. and then to a dense forest like we see today at 4620 (±60) 14C yr B.P.

ResumoThe characterization and mapping of paleoweathering surfaces, as well as their associated deposits, throughout the northeastern Amazonia can be a useful tool for inter-basin stratigraphic correlations and for establishing the evolution of landscapes and climates through time. This type of investigation has led to the recognition of five weathering surfaces developed from the Upper Cretaceous through the Quaternary, designated here as S1 to S5. Surface S1 occurs at the top of Late Cretaceous deposits, represented by the Ipixuna/Cujupe succession, as well as on older Precambrian and Paleozoic rocks. Surface S2 marks the top of an indurated, massive, semi-flint1 unit. For cases in which surfaces S1 and S2 are amalgamated, a thick, lateritic paleosol displaying hexagonal, branched concretions is present. Surface S3 occurs at the top of the Pirabas and lower portion of the Barreiras Formations of Late Oligocene/Early Miocene age, and it is also associated with paleosol, but has no lateritization. When surface S3 is amalgamated with surfaces S1 and S2, bauxite is present in association with the underlying laterites. Surface S4 bounds the top of the middle to upper Barreiras Formation of Middle Miocene age, as well as correlatable deposits known as the Belterra Clay. This surface is marked by a lateritic paleosol having columnar concretions. Surface S5 occurs between a lower unit consisting of massive, light red sands of the Plio-Pleistocene Post-Barreiras 1 sediments and an upper unit of yellow, eolian sands of the Holocene Post-Barreiras 2 Sediments. The paleoweathering surfaces present in the northeastern Amazonia enable the reconstruction of several depositional episodes represented by thin (only few meters thick) sedimentary units from the Late Cretaceous to the Quaternary. The creation of new accommodation space on subsiding areas gave rise to sediment accumulation during transgressions. Intervening weathering surfaces formed during significant falls in relative sea-level, associated with tectonically stable episodes. The overprinting of weathering surfaces formed during different times, and thus under different climatic conditions, seems to have been crucial for the development of the various weathering products observed throughout the region, which include economically important laterites, bauxites, semi-flint beds and kaolin deposits. This paper shows that the genesis of these deposits was controlled by the complex interplay of tectonics, climate, sediment deposition and erosion, resulting in a complex evolution of paleolandscapes.

Miocene Barreiras Formation

sequence stratigraphy
ResumoThe Miocene Barreiras Formation in the Middle Rio Capim area records an incised valley system for which facies analysis and ichnology (Skolithos, Ophiomorpha, Planolites, Gyrolithes, Taenidium) suggest an estuarine character. Three stratigraphic units are recognized (from bottom to top): Unit 1 includes an inner estuarine tidal channel complex and tidal flat/salt marsh deposits; Unit 2 consists of estuarine bay/lagoon and flood tidal delta deposits related to the estuary mouth; and Unit 3 includes a tidal channel with a tidal point bar, as well as tidal flat/salt marsh deposits similar to those from Unit 1. These units and their bounding surfaces record the history of relative sea level changes in the estuary. After a sea level drop, the valley was inundated and formed an amalgamated sequence boundary and transgressive surface. Transgression (Unit 1) promoted the landward shift of flood tidal deltas and lagoon settings (Unit 2). The system then moved seaward, with the superposition of inner estuarine deposits (Unit 3) over Unit 2. Facies architecture seems to have been controlled by tectonics, as shown by: the paleovalley orientation according to the main tectonic structures of the basin; the presence of faults and fractures that displace the basal unconformity; and the abundance of soft sediment deformation.

ResumoThe concept of mixed pixels allows the interpretation of remote sensing digital image data at sub-pixel level. Fraction-image data, obtained using the notion of mixed pixels, offer a potentially powerful method to detect changes in land-cover over a given period of time. This study proposes a new approach to detect land-cover changes, using two sets of fraction-image data obtained from sets of multispectral image data acquired at two different dates, over the same area. Changes based on the selected pixel components are then used to generate the fraction-change image data, including both positive (increase) and negative (decrease) changes in each component. The proposed analysis is then performed in the fraction-change space in two different ways: (1) by implementing unsupervised classification methods and (2) by comparing the fraction-change images among themselves. The proposed methodology is tested on two sets of Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM) multispectral image data obtained at two different dates and covering a test area mapped in previous works. Results obtained by the proposed methodology are presented and discussed.

ResumoThe paper investigated the application of MODIS data for mapping regional land cover at moderate resolutions (250 and 500 in), for regional conservation purposes. Land cover maps were generated for two major conservation areas (Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem-GYE, USA and the Par State, Brazil) using MODIS data and decision tree classifications. The MODIS land cover products were evaluated using existing Landsat TM land cover maps as reference data. The Landsat TM land cover maps were processed to their fractional composition at the MODIS resolution (250 and 500 m). In GYE, the MODIS land cover was very successful at mapping extensive cover types (e.g. coniferous forest and grasslands) and far less successful at mapping smaller habitats (e.g. wetlands, deciduous tree cover) that typically occur in patches that are smaller than the MODIS pixels, but are reported to be very important to biodiversity conservation. The MODIS classification for Para State was successful at producing a regional forest/non-forest product which is useful for monitoring the extreme human impacts such as deforestation. The ability of MODIS data to map secondary forest remains to be tested, since regrowth typically harbors reduced levels of biodiversity. The two case studies showed the value of using multi-date 250 m data with only two spectral bands, as well as single day 500 in data with seven spectral bands, thus illustrating the versatile use of MODIS data in two contrasting environments. MODIS data provide new options for regional land cover mapping that are less labor-intensive than Landsat and have higher resolution than previous 1 km AVHRR or the current 1 km global land cover product. The usefulness of the MODTS data in addressing biodiversity conservation questions will ultimately depend upon the patch sizes of important habitats and the land cover transformations that threaten them.
