ResumoThinking about nonlinearity in engineering areas, up to the 70s, was focused on intentionally built nonlinear parts in order to improve the operational characteristics of a device or system. Keying, saturation, hysteretic phenomena, and dead zones were added to existing devices increasing their behavior diversity and precision. In this context, an intrinsic nonlinearity was treated just as a linear approximation, around equilibrium points. Approximation methods and Lyapunov stability theorems elegantly solved the dynamical behavior analysis problems and gave hints about how to synthesize systems with some desired properties. At that time, bifurcation and chaos were not present in engineers daily life. Chaotic dynamics was discovered at the end of the nineteenth century, by Henry Poincaré as a result from nonlinear phenomena subjected to qualitative changes in their behavior, provoked by bifurcations due to parameter variations. By studying the mathematical model of the circular restricted three-body problem, he was able to glimpse the chaotic motion that appears in complicated and apparently unpredictable trajectories that were close to periodic orbits, but spread fully in bounded regions of the phase space. Analyzing this motion, he concluded that it may happen that small differences in the initial conditions produce very great ones in the final phenomena. A small error in the former will produce an enormous error in the latter. Prediction becomes impossible, and we have the fortuitous phenomenon. In the last couple of decades of the twentieth century, the profound impact of chaos in science, engineering, and medicine was acknowledged. Fundamental experiments performed in all areas of science allowed us to finally understand a realistic scenario in which the chaotic behavior not only occurs in Nature, but it is also a fundamental mechanism that Nature accounts for to mediate its phenomena. Thus, the chaotic behavior can be observed, for example, in the electrical activity from biological systems, in the transition of a fluid to turbulent motion, and in the motion of the moons of the giant planets. Inspired on the rediscovering of the richness of nonlinear and chaotic phenomena, engineers started using analytical tools from Qualitative Theory of Differential Equations, allowing more precise analysis and synthesis, in order to produce new vital products and services. Bifurcation Theory, Dynamical Systems, and Chaos started to be part of the mandatory set of tools for design engineers. Consequently, an important interaction between Mathematics and Engineering started to gain importance and, in this scenario, the blending of three distinct methodological approaches, analytical, numerical, and experimental needs to be improved as follows. (i)Numerical experiments that cleverly and precisely use tailored computer-based numerical simulations to give insights into problems that are analytically intractable so far.(ii)Analytical methods to deal with nonlinear differential equations and to geometrically describe structures that arise as a consequences of the chaotic dynamics.(iii)High precision experiments, which involve up-to-date measurement technology and procedures to capture the chaotic behavior in specific fields. This special edition of the Mathematical Problems in Engineering aims to provide a picture of the importance of the Bifurcation Theory, relating it with nonlinear and chaotic dynamics for natural and engineered systems. Ideas of how this dynamics can be captured through precisely tailored real and numerical experiments and understanding by the combination of specific tools that associate dynamical system theory and geometric tools in a very clever, sophisticated, and at the same time simple and unique analytical environment are the subject of this issue, allowing new methods to design high precision devices and equipment. ResumoSwing-by techniques are extensively used in interplanetary missions to minimize fuel consumption and to raise payloads of spacecrafts. The effectiveness of this type of maneuver has been proven since the beginning of space exploration. According to this premise, we have explored the existence of a natural and direct link between low Earth orbits and the lunar sphere of influence to get low-energy transfer trajectories to the Near Earth Objects (NEOs) 99942 Apophis, 1994 WR12, and 2007 UW1 through swing-bys with the Moon. The existence of this link is related to a family of retrograde periodic orbits around the Lagrangian equilibrium point L1 predicted for the circular, planar, restricted three-body Earth-Moon-particle problem. The trajectories in this link are sensitive to small disturbances. This enables them to be conveniently diverted reducing so the cost of the swing-by maneuver. These maneuvers allow a gain in energy sufficient for the trajectories to escape from the Earth-Moon system and to stabilize in heliocentric orbits between the Earth and Venus or Earth and Mars. Therefore, the trajectories have sufficient reach to intercept the NEOs' orbits.

ResumoIt is well known that lunar satellites in polar orbits suffer a high increase on the eccentricity due to the gravitational perturbation of the Earth. That effect is a natural consequence of the Lidov-Kozai resonance. The final fate of such satellites is the collision with the Moon. Therefore, the control of the orbital eccentricity leads to the control of the satellite's lifetime. In the present work we study this problem and introduce an approach in order to keep the orbital eccentricity of the satellite at low values. The whole work was made considering two systems: the 3-body problem, Moon-Earth-satellite, and the 4-body problem, Moon-Earth-Sun-satellite. First, we simulated the systems considering a satellite with initial eccentricity equals to 0.0001 and a range of initial altitudes between 100 km and 5000 km. In such simulations we followed the evolution of the satellite's eccentricity. We also obtained an empirical expression for the length of time needed to occur the collision with the Moon as a function of the initial altitude. The results found for the 3-body model were not significantly different from those found for the 4-body model. Secondly, using low-thrust propulsion, we introduced a correction of the eccentricity every time it reached the value 0.05. These simulations were made considering a set of different thrust values, from 0.1 N up to 0.4 N which can be obtained by using Hall Plasma Thrusters. In each run we measured the length of time, needed to correct the eccentricity value (from e=0.04 to e=0.05). From these results we obtained empirical expressions of this time as a function of the initial altitude and as a function of the thrust value.

ResumoThe identification and modeling of patterns of human activity have important ramifications for applications ranging from predicting disease spread to optimizing resource allocation. Because of its relevance and availability, written correspondence provides a powerful proxy for studying human activity. One school of thought is that human correspondence is driven by responses to received correspondence, a view that requires a distinct response mechanism to explain e-mail and letter correspondence observations. We demonstrate that, like e-mail correspondence, the letter correspondence patterns of 16 writers, performers, politicians, and scientists are well described by the circadian cycle, task repetition, and changing communication needs. We confirm the universality of these mechanisms by rescaling letter and e-mail correspondence statistics to reveal their underlying similarity.

ResumoIn this work, we investigate the use of the Dynamical System Theory to increase the efficiency of the satellite power supply subsystems. The core of a satellite power subsystem relies on its DC/DC converter. This is a very nonlinear system that presents a multitude of phenomena ranging from bifurcations, quasi-periodicity, chaos, coexistence of attractors, among others. The traditional power subsystem design techniques try to avoid these nonlinear phenomena so that it is possible to use linear system theory in small regions about the equilibrium points. Here, we show that more efficiency can be drawn from a power supply subsystem if the DC/DC converter operates in regions of high nonlinearity. In special, if it operates in a chaotic regime, is has an intrinsic sensitivity that can be exploited to efficiently drive the power subsystem over high ranges of power requests by using control of chaos techniques.

ResumoSeveral studies over the last decade have shown that tropical reservoirs may constitute an appreciable source of methane (CH4) to the atmosphere. Here, we show that the use of low-cost, innovative mitigation and recovery strategies is able not only to reduce these emissions, but also to transform existing biogenic methane stocks into a renewable energy source. Recovered gas may be pumped to large consuming centers or stored locally and burned by gas turbines to generate electricity during high-demand periods, or even purified for transport applications. Our analysis shows that the use of biogenic methane may increase considerably the energy supply in countries, like Brazil, which possess large tropical reservoirs.

ResumoThe technique of large deviation multifractal spectrum has shown that the high-latitude (77.5 degrees N, 69.2 degrees W) geomagnetic fluctuations can be described from direct dissipation process or loading-unloading regimes of the solar wind-magnetosphere coupling. In this paper, we analyze the H-component of low-latitude (22.4 degrees S, 43.6 degrees W) geomagnetic field variability observed during the month of July 2000 at the Geomagnetic Observatory, Vassouras, RJ, Brazil. The variability pattern during this period is a mixture of quiet and disturbed days including the Bastille Day intense geomagnetic storm on 15 July. Due to the complexity of this data, we pursue a detailed analysis of the geomagnetic fluctuations in different time scales including a multifractal approach using the singular power spectrum deviations obtained from the wavelet transform modulus maxima (WTMM). The results suggest, as observed from high-latitude data, the occurrence of low-latitude multifractal processes driving the intermittent coupling between the solar wind-magnetosphere and geomagnetic field variations. On finer scales possible physical mechanisms in the context of nonlinear magnetosphere response are discussed.

ResumoThe maximal covering location problem (MCLP) maximizes the population that has a facility within a maximum travel distance or time. Numerous extensions have been proposed to enhance its applicability. like the probabilistic model for the maximum covering location-allocation with a constraint in waiting time or queue length for congested systems, with one or more servers per service center. This paper presents a solution procedure for that probabilistic model, considering one server per center, using a column generation and covering graph approaches. The computational tests report interesting results for network instances up to 818 vertices. The column generation results are competitive solving the instances in reasonable computational times, reaching optimality for some and providing good bounds for the difficult instances.

ResumoThe search for turbulent-like patterns in nonlinear gravitational clustering has recently advanced due to N-body simulations based on the cold dark matter scenario. In this work we present a computational statistical analysis of the formation of galaxy halos by gravitational collapse in N-body simulation from the Virgo Consortium Data. We find that rescaled data points of gravitational energy for different redshifts collapse into similar patterns, well approximated by a Generalized Extreme Value (GEV) distribution. Once similar statistical behavior was found for chaotic advection, this result is discussed in the context of non-dissipative turbulent-like behavior. From our analysis the unstable gravity field itself behaves as a chaotic advecting flow where the particles (galaxies) can be interpreted as turbulent tracers.

ResumoThe dynamics of the circular restricted three-body Earth-Moon-particle problem predicts the existence of the retrograde periodic orbits around the Lagrangian equilibrium point L1. Such orbits belong to the so-called family G (Broucke, Periodic orbits in the restricted three-body problem with Earth-Moon masses, JPL Technical Report 32-1168, 1968) and starting from them it is possible to define a set of trajectories that form round trip links between the Earth and the Moon. These links occur even with more complex dynamical systems as the complete Sun-Earth-Moon-particle problem. One of the most remarkable properties of these trajectories, observed for the four-body problem, is a meaningful inclination gain when they penetrate into the lunar sphere of influence and accomplish a swing-by with the Moon. This way, when one of these trajectories returns to the proximities of the Earth, it will be in a different orbital plane from its initial Earth orbit. In this work, we present studies that show the possibility of using this property mainly to accomplish transfer maneuvers between two Earth orbits with different altitudes and inclinations, with low cost, taking into account the dynamics of the four-body problem and of the swing-by as well. The results show that it is possible to design a set of nominal transfer trajectories that require Delta V (Total) less than conventional methods like Hohmann, bi-elliptic and bi-parabolic transfer with plane change.
