ResumoThis article presents research results of an extensible visualization pipeline for real-time exploratory analysis of spatially explicit simulations. We identify software requirements and discuss the main conceptual and design issues. We propose a protocol for data serialization, a high performance monitoring mechanism, and graphical interfaces for visualization. Performance experiments show that combining multithreading and the Blackboard design pattern reduces the visualization response time by 80%, with no significant increase in memory consumption (less than 7%). The components presented in this article have been integrated in the TerraME modeling platform for simulation of terrestrial systems.

ResumoIn Brazil, most of the disasters involving landslide occur in coastal regions, with population density concentrated on steep slopes. Thus, different approaches have been used to evaluate the landslide risk, although the greatest difficulty is related to the scarcity of spatial data with good quality. In this context, four cities located on the southeast coast of Brazil Santos, Cubatão, Caraguatatuba and Ubatuba in a region with the rough reliefs of the Serra do Mar and with a history of natural disasters were evaluated. Spatial prediction by fuzzy gamma technique was used for the landslide susceptibility mapping, considering environmental variables from data and software in the public domain. To validate the susceptibility mapping results, it was overlapped with risk sectors provided by the Geological Survey of Brazil (CPRM). A positive correlation was observed between the classes most susceptible and the location of these sectors. The results were also analyzed from the categorization of risk levels provided by CPRM. To compare the approach with other studies using landslide-scar maps, correlated indexes were evaluated, which also showed satisfactory results, thus indicating that the methodology presented is appropriate for risk assessment in urban areas and can be replicated to municipalities that do not have risk areas mapped.

ResumoBio-optical models have been used to estimate and map the concentration of chlorophyll-a (chl-a) in aquatic systems. Bio-optical models algorithms try to infer the concentration of optically active components in water from their inherent optical properties (IOPs). We proposed the use of two single wavelengths to retrieve chl-a concentration in a tropical aquatic system. The results were compared to in situ measurements of chl-a. To spatialized the results of the bio optical modeling, we tested the spatial interpolation following two methods: (1) ordinary kriging technique was used to spatialize the calculated values of estimated chl-a for each model; (2) ordinary kriging was used to spatialize the estimated Rrs from 470nm and 700nm then the two wavelengths models were calculated by a map algebra using the spatialized Rrs. We generated four different spatial interpolations of chl-a concentration. They were compared to the spatialized reference based on the in situ chl-a collected in the reservoir of ItumbiaraGoiás in the same period. The comparison was performed through the "Spatial Language for Algebraic Geoprocessing" (LEGAL) implemented at SPRING software. Results showed a better accuracy for the procedure using the spatialization of Rrs and map algebra of them. Thus the spatializaton of proximal remote sensing measurements in order to retrieve the optically active components in water should be performed through the interpolation of the Rrs.

ResumoWe study the influence of cold fronts on the heat fluxes and thermal structure of a tropical reservoir located in Brazil. The period chosen for this study consisted of 49 days between 28 April 2010 and 15 July 2010 and was defined based on information from the Brazilian Centre for Weather Forecasting and Climate Studies (CPTEC), data collected in situ and the interpretation of remotely sensed images. During the selected time period, five cold front passages were identified, allowing us to analyze the cumulative effect of cold fronts and the reservoirs resilience on the days that elapsed between the passages. To better understand the physical processes that drive changes in heat fluxes and thermal structure, a simulation was performed that utilized a threedimensional hydrodynamic model. The results showed that during the cold front days, the sensible and latent heat fluxes were enhanced by approximately 24 % and 19 %, respectively. The daily average heat loss was up to 167 % higher on the cold front days than on the non-cold front days. The high heat loss and the increased wind intensity that occurred during the cold front passages destabilized the water column and provided partial or complete mixing. The colder waters of the Parana´ıba River contributed to reestablish the thermal stratification following the passages of the cold fronts. These results suggest that cold front passages play an important role in the stratification and mixing regimes of Brazilian reservoirs located in southern and southeastern regions.

ResumoThe objective of this work is to produce statistics that are going to show changes occurred in Brazils ecosystems and these statistics are going to join the SEEA (Environmental-Economic Accounts System). It is based by a SEEAs methodology, diffused by UN (United Nations), which aims an approach between economic and environmental statistics, producing international comparability and conceptual uniformity to evaluate change process in land cover and land use that occurs in several countries. It is necessary to verifying the suitability of methodological procedures to Brazilian reality and the access to all information and files needed. The first step was analysing MODIS (Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer) as orbital instrument on the purposed classification method. The choice of this sensor was made because of the products quality and its capacity to generate images of a large area, though the challenge is to identify accurate Land usages categories in images with a spatial resolution of approximately 250 m. After the final classification, the next step is to make a quantification and comparison of data from these different years using a 1 km² grids, as proposed in an already used methodology by the European Environment Agency. This procedure will allow evaluate and identify the process of changing in each grid of the land cover and land use, and provide historical series of the chosen years.

ResumoThis paper examines the properties of wave propagation in transmission lines with periodic LC and CL cells, taking into account ohmic losses in resistors connected in series to lumped capacitors and inductors. First order time differential equations are derived for current and charge, thus allowing analysis of transient regimes of the lines being excited by a pulse of arbitrary shape. In particular we examine the propagation characteristics of periodic lines in which identical unit cells are repeated periodically and also discuss the interpretation of positive and negative phase velocities associ-ated with the LC and CL topologies. Loss effects on the propagation bandwidths of both lines are also discussed, and it is shown that in the left-handed transmission line (CL configuration) the phase advance of the crest of the transmitted signal with respect to the source signal is due to the intrinsic dispersive nature of the CL line which, in contrast to the LC line, is highly dispersive at low propagation factors.

ResumoFlood maps are a crucial tool to support emergency management, disaster recovery and risk reduction planning. Traditional flood mapping methods are time-consuming, labor intensive, and costly. Our goal in this paper is to introduce a novel technique to aggregate knowledge and information to map coastal flooded areas. We proposed a Difference of Normalized Difference Water Indices (DNDWI) derived from two LANDSAT-5/TM surface reflectance product acquired before and after the passage of Hurricane Ike, for Upper Texas in September of 2008. The reference flooded area was delineated interpolating the maximum surge in each location using a spline with barriers method with high tension and a 30 meter Digital Elevation Model (DEM). It was noticed that NDWI values decreased after the hurricane landfall on average from 0.226 to 0.122 for flooded area. However for the non-flooded areas it increased from 0.292 to 0.300. Results from the Monte Carlo simulation showed that mapping flooded areas with DNDWI got an accuracy of 85.68% while the non-flooded areas got an accuracy of 92.13%. Thus, DNDWI is promising tool for mapping flooded areas since it is a cheaper and simple technique which can be applied rapidly for several areas of the planet.

ResumoThe alcoholic fermentation of substrates rich in free soluble sugars is well known and has been industrially developed. However, the production of second-generation ethanol from lignocellulosic biomass, which is abundantly available worldwide, remains under development. The aim of this study was to evaluate the possibility of using the Musa cavendischii banana tree pseudostem as a substrate for alcoholic fermentation. Hydrolisis methods using dilute sulfuric acid (1% and 2% H2SO4; 15 and 30 min; 90 ºC, 100 ºC and 120 ºC) and enzymes (pH 5.5; and 45 °C for 24 h reaction time) were evaluated both separately and in combination. The effect of chemical pre-treatment of the substrate using 1% and 3% m/m NaOH (120 ºC, 15 min) was verified for both methods. The highest yield coefficient of fermentable sugars from dry biomass (YTS = 74%) was obtained using enzymatic hydrolysis and pre-treatment with 3% NaOH. Using acid hydrolysis, the maximum yield obtained was 22% (1% H2SO4, 120 ºC, 30 min). Fermentation of the hydrolysates was satisfactory, and the maximum yield of ethanol formed per unit of substrate consumed, total productivity and efficiency values were 0.35 g, 0.90 g ethanol L-1·h-1 and 65.9%, respectively. This demonstrates the utility of banana tree pseudostems in second-generation ethanol production.

ResumoThis paper proposes a cloud infrastructure for Space Systems e-Engineering utilizing the Software as a Service (SaaS) model. The system exposes services tailored to the concept design phase of satellite manufacturing. The solution relies on two previous works named SatBudgets and SpaceESB for budgeting automation and service wrapping, respectively. It is expected that the environment will promote collaboration among project stakeholders and empower horizontal communications in the systems engineering team. Basically, a cloud infrastructure, a groupware and all the ancillary software components are open source and configurable so that flexibility and scalability may be attained.
