AbstractThe femtocell concept aims to combine fixed-line broadband access with mobile telephony using the deployment of low-cost, low-power third and fourth generation base stations in the subscribers' homes. While the self-configuration of femtocells is a plus, it can limit the quality of service (QoS) for the users and reduce the efficiency of the network, based on outdated allocation parameters such as signal power level. To this end, this paper presents a proposal for optimized allocation of users on a cochannel macro-femto network, that enable self-configuration and public access, aiming to maximize the quality of service of applications and using more efficiently the available energy, seeking the concept of Green networking. Thus, when the user needs to connect to make a voice or a data call, the mobile phone has to decide which network to connect, using the information of number of connections, the QoS parameters (packet loss and throughput) and the signal power level of each network. For this purpose, the system is modeled as a Markov Decision Process, which is formulated to obtain an optimal policy that can be applied on the mobile phone. The policy created is flexible, allowing different analyzes, and adaptive to the specific characteristics defined by the telephone company. The results show that compared to traditional QoS approaches, the policy proposed here can improve energy efficiency by up to 10%.

AbstractRadiative transfer is the main phenomenon in the basis of several relevant problems of scientific and technological interest. Examples of application of the mathematical and computational modeling of such phenomenon can be found in astronomy, environmental sciences, engineering and medicine among many different areas. The integro-differential equation known as Boltzmann equation describes mathematically the interaction of the radiation with the participating medium, i.e. a medium which may absorb, scatter and emit radiation. Several methods have been developed for the solution of the Bolztmann equation. In the present work we present a comparison of the solutions obtained for the one-dimensional problem with four different methods: (i) Monte Carlo (MC) method; (ii) Discrete Ordinates method (SN) combined with a finite difference approximation; (iii) Analytical Discrete Ordinates method (ASN); and (iv) Laplace Transform Discrete Ordinates method (LTSN). Our final objective is to solve the inverse radiative transfer problem and for that purpose, we want to investigate methods that may provide accurate and fast solutions for the direct problem.

AbstractData assimilation is a process to combine a model prediction of a state variable at a given time with a set of measurements available at this particular time in order to obtain a suitable set of data for model initialization. The state of the art in data assimilation techniques are based on Extended Kalman Filter (EKF) and Four-Dimensional Variational Analysis (4D-Var), but this methodology has high computational complexity. In this paper, the authors propose emulating a Kalman filter using a neural network as a proposal to reduce the computational complexity of the problem. This work applies a recurrent neural network paradigm, named Elman Neural Network (E-NN), to the data assimilation problem of a non-linear shallow water model. The performance of E-NN on emulating the Kalman filter (KF) and the evaluation of application of the technique at high dimension problems of operational numerical weather forecasting are analyzed. The results with the shallow water ID dynamics show that E-NN converges faster than standard Multilayer Perceptron Neural Network (MLP-NN) in the training phase, and its computational complexity is less than that of extended Kalman filter. However, there is a loss of accuracy in the results when comparing E-NN to MLP-NN and KF.

AbstractThe Mirrored Traveling Tournament Problem (mTTP) is a challenging combinatorial optimization problem which consists in generating a timetable for sports tournaments with two half series, what is equivalent to a double round-robin timetable problem. The distance traveled by the teams should be minimized in the final timetable, and a new objective is to minimize the longest distance traveled, named MinMaxTTP. It is proposed an integer programming formulation to the mTTP and two models with dynamic constraints to its solution. Both models are based on the detection of independent sets on conflict graphs, whose use has not been reported in the literature about the problem. Real data benchmarks from a baseball tournament are used in the experiments carried out.
