AbstractThis paper aim at evaluating the performance of two semantic networks generated by data mining for classifying land cover using GEographic Object-Based Image Analysis (GEOBIA). The first one used statistical and texture attributes, and the second network employed only statistical attributes. The attributes were extracted from ALOS/AVNIR images pan-sharpened with ALOS/PRISM. Relief information provided by the TOPODATA geomorphometric database was also used as input data. The studied area is Nova Friburgo County, with an extension of 933 km(2), located in the mountainous region of Rio de Janeiro State. The Kappa index obtained by the classification based on statistical and texture attributes was 0.81, while the result for the classification derived only from statistical attributes achieved 0.84. These values corroborate the excellent accuracy of both results. The statistical hypothesis test between the two indices at 95% confidence interval demonstrated that there is no difference between the two classification accuracies. AbstractTurbidity plumes of Sao Francisco, Caravelas, Doce, and Paraiba do Sul river systems, located along the NE/E Brazilian coast, are analyzed for their dispersal patterns of Total Suspended Solids (TSS) concentration using Landsat images and a logarithmic algorithm proposed by Tassan (1987) to convert satellite reflectance values to TSS. The TSS results obtained were compared to in situ collected TSS data. The analysis of the satellite image data set revealed that each river system exhibits a distinct turbidity plume dispersal pattern. The behavior, dimension and degree of turbidity of the Sao Francisco River plume have been greatly altered by the construction of a cascade of hydroelectric dam reservoirs in its hydrological basin. The plume has lost its typical unimodal seasonal pattern of material dispersion and its turbidity has decreased due to the regulation of river flow by the dams and TSS retainance by the reservoirs. In contrast, the Doce and Paraiba do Sul river plumes are still subject to seasonal pulsations and show more turbid conditions than the SF plume, as dams are less numerous, set in the middle river sections and the natural river flow has been maintained. The Caravelas Coastal System river plume is restricted to near shore shallow waters dominated by resuspension processes. During austral spring and summer when NE-E winds prevail, all plumes generally disperse southward. Short-term northward reversals may occur in winter with the passage of atmospheric cold fronts. The Sao Francisco and Doce river plumes tend to disperse obliquely to the coast and transport materials further offshore, while the Caravelas and Paraiba do Sul plumes tend to disperse mainly parallel to the coast, enhancing TSS retention nearshore.

Antes do vazamento, a vegetação exibia dossel homogêneo elevado desenvolvimento estrutural. ABSTRACT: Oil spills are potential threats to the integrity of highly productive coastal wetlands, such as mangrove forests. In October 1983, a mangrove area of nearly 300 ha located on the southeastern coast of Brazil was impacted by a 3.5 million liter crude oil spill released by a broken pipeline. In order to assess the long-term effects of oil pollution on mangrove vegetation, we carried out a GISbased multitemporal analysis of aerial photographs of the years 1962, 1994, 2000 and 2003. Photointerpretation, visual classification, class quantification, ground-truth and vegetation structure data were combined to evaluate the oil impact. Before the spill, the mangroves exhibited a homogeneous canopy and well-developed stands. More than ten years after the spill, the mangrove vegetation exhibited three distinct zones reflecting the long-term effects of the oil pollution. The most impacted zone (10.5 ha) presented dead trees, exposed substrate and recovering stands with reduced structural development. We suggest that the distinct impact and recovery zones reflect the spatial variability of oil removal rates in the mangrove forest. This study identifies the multitemporal analysis of aerial photographs as a useful tool for assessing a systems capacity for recovery and monitoring the long-term residual effects of pollutants on vegetation dynamics, thus giving support to mangrove forest management and conservation.

AbstractMany researchers have shown the potential of Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) images for agricultural applications, particularly for monitoring regions with limitations in terms of acquiring cloud free optical images. Recently, Brazil and Germany began a feasibility study on the construction of an orbital L-band SAR sensor referred to as MAPSAR (Multi-Application Purpose SAR). This sensor provides L-band images in three spatial resolutions and polarimetric, interferometric and stereoscopic capabilities. Thus, studies are needed to evaluate the potential of future MAPSAR images. The objective of this study was to evaluate multipolarized MAPSAR images simulated by the airborne SAR-R99B sensor to distinguish coffee, cotton and pasture fields in Brazil. Discrimination among crops was evaluated through graphical and cluster analysis of mean backscatter values, considering single, dual and triple polarizations. Planting row direction of coffee influenced the backscatter and was divided into two classes: parallel and perpendicular to the sensor look direction. Single polarizations had poor ability to discriminate the crops. The overall accuracies were less than 59 %, but the understanding of the microwave interaction with the crops could be explored. Combinations of two polarizations could differentiate various fields of crops, highlighting the combination VV-HV that reached 78 % overall accuracy. The use of three polarizations resulted in 85.4 % overall accuracy, indicating that the classes pasture and parallel coffee were fully discriminated from the other classes. These results confirmed the potential of multipolarized MAPSAR images to distinguish the studied crops and showed considerable improvement in the accuracy of the results when the number of polarizations was increased.

AbstractThe objective of this work was to develop a procedure to estimate soybean crop areas in Rio Grande do Sul state, Brazil. Estimations were made based on the temporal profiles of the enhanced vegetation index (Evi) calculated from moderate resolution imaging spectroradiometer (Modis) images. The methodology developed for soybean classification was named Modis crop detection algorithm (MCDA). The MCDA provides soybean area estimates in December (first forecast), using images from the sowing period, and March (second forecast), using images from the sowing and maximum crop development periods. The results obtained by the MCDA were compared with the official estimates on soybean area of the Instituto Brasileiro de Geografia e Estatistica. The coefficients of determination ranged from 0.91 to 0.95, indicating good agreement between the estimates. For the 2000/2001 crop year, the MCDA soybean crop map was evaluated using a soybean crop map derived from Landsat images, and the overall map accuracy was approximately 82%, with similar commission and omission errors. The MCDA was able to estimate soybean crop areas in Rio Grande do Sul State and to generate an annual thematic map with the geographic position of the soybean fields. The soybean crop area estimates by the MCDA are in good agreement with the official agricultural statistics.

Abstract The objective of this work was to evaluate the performance of the enhanced vegetation index (EVI) and the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) both from the moderate resolution imaging spectroradiometer (Modis) sensor to discriminate soybean cultivated areas from sugarcane, pasture, cerrado, and forest ones in the state of Mato Grosso, Brazil. Images acquired during two periods were used: off-season and maximum soybean crop development. For each analyzed class, 31 samples were selected from reference maps, and the differences in the values of each soybean vegetation index were evaluated against the other classes using the Tukey-Kramer test. Afterwards, the differences between the vegetation indices were assessed using the Wilcoxon paired test. NDVI performed best in discriminating soybean areas during the off-season period, particularly when using images acquired from day of year (DOY) 161 to 273, whereas EVI performed best during maximum crop development, particularly when using images from DOY 353 to 33. Therefore, best classification results for soybean in the state of Mato Grosso can be achieved by coupling Modis NDVI images acquired during off-season period and EVI images acquired during the maximum crop development period.

ABSTRACT: The objective of this work was to analyze the potential use of SAR polarimetric images from the TerraSAR-X sensor system, at StripMap mode, to map land use and land cover in SW Brazilian Amazon. Amplitude images at polarizations AHH, AVV, A<HH.VV*>, derived from the co-variance matrix, as well as the entropy AEntropia, derived from the decomposition of targets by eigenvalues, are parts of the datasets investigated individually or in combined form. Two classifiers were used: the first is based on statistical functions of maximum likelihood (MAXVER), and the second is the contextual method (Context). The thematic results from these classifications were evaluated by a confusion matrix and by the Kappa index. Summarizing we can state that the components A<HH.VV*> and AEntropia, gave a significant contribution to the image classification procedure, considering specially the Context method, whose performance reached 78% of Global Accuracy and a Kappa index of 0.70.

Abstract The objective of this work was to develop and evaluate a method for estimating soybean crop area on a regional scale and to calculate the statistical error associated with the estimate. The method (Geosafras), which combines statistical sampling techniques with characteristics of images obtained by orbital remote sensing, was applied to obtain an objective sampling estimation for soybean crop area in the 2005/2006 harvest season in the state of Rio Grande do Sul (RS), Brazil. Soybean-producing municipalities in RS were distributed into ten strata according to preexisting data on the area cultivated with the crop. The number of municipalities selected in each stratum followed Neymans allocation rule. In each selected municipality, points corresponding to the pixels of images were randomized and classified as soybean or non‑soybean after site visitation. From the data of 3,000 points in the 30 selected municipalities across the ten strata, soybean crop area in RS was estimated, totaling 4,069,887 ha, with a coefficient of variation (CV) of 3.4%. This estimate was consistent with official data. The stratified objective sampling method, supported by remote sensing, allows for the estimation of the area cultivated with soybean in the state of Rio Grande do Sul and is able to quantify the error associated with the calculated estimate.

AbstractEmpirical approaches and, more recently, physical approaches, have grounded the establishment of logical connections between radiometric variables derived from remote data and biophysical variables derived from vegetation cover. This study was aimed at evaluating correlations of dendrometric and density data from canopies of Eucalyptus spp., as collected in Capao Bonito forest unit, with radiometric data from imagery acquired by the TM/Landsat-5 sensor on two orbital passages over the study site (dates close to field data collection). Results indicate that stronger correlations were identified between crown dimensions and canopy height with near-infrared spectral band data (rho(s)4), irrespective of the satellite passage date. Estimates of spatial distribution of dendrometric data and canopy density (D) using spectral characterization were consistent with the spatial distribution of tree ages during the study period. Statistical tests were applied to evaluate performance disparities of empirical models depending on which date data were acquired. Results indicated a significant difference between models based on distinct data acquisition dates.

Paraíba Basin
AbstractSeveral publications have contributed to improve the stratigraphy of the Paraíba Basin in northeastern Brazil. However, the characterization and distribution of sedimentary units in onshore areas of this basin are still incomplete, despite their significance for reconstructing the tectono-sedimentary evolution of the South American passive margin. This work provides new information to differentiate among lithologically similar strata, otherwise entirely unrelated in time. This approach included morphological, sedimentological and stratigraphic descriptions based on surface and sub-surface data integrated with remote sensing, optically stimulated luminescence dating, U+Th/He dating of weathered goethite, and heavy mineral analysis. Based on this study, it was possible to show that Cretaceous units are constrained to the eastern part of the onshore Paraíba Basin. Except for a few outcrops of carbonatic rocks nearby the modern coastline, deposits of this age are not exposed to the surface in the study area. Instead, the sedimentary cover throughout the basin is constituted by mineralogically and chronologically distinctive deposits, inserted in the Barreiras Formation and mostly in the Post-Barreiras Sediments, of early/middle Miocene and Late Pleistocene-Holocene ages, respectively. The data presented in this work support tectonic deformation as a factor of great relevance to the distribution of the sedimentary units of the Paraíba Basin.
