AbstractThe purpose of this study was the temperature monitoring at bonding interface during the rotary friction welding process of dissimilar materials: AA1050 aluminum with AISI 304 stainless steel. As it is directly related to the mechanical strenght of the junction, its experimental determination in real time is of fundamental importance for understanding and characterizing the main process steps, and the definition and optimization of parameters. The temperature gradients were obtained using a system called Thermocouple Data-Logger, which allowed monitoring and recording data in real-time operation. In the graph temperature versus time obtained, the heating rates, cooling were analyzed, and the maximum temperature was determined that occurred during welding, and characterized every phases of the process. The efficiency of this system demonstrated by experimental tests and the knowledge of the temperature at the bonding interface open new lines of research to understand the process of friction welding.

AbstractThe Brazilian Microgravity Program is mainly based on experiments carried out on sounding rockets. Up to present days, three missions carrying a total of of experiments were made. In all flights, a fast solidi?cation furnace, capable of producing temperatures up to 900o C, was used to process metal and semiconductor alloys in microgravity environment. This paper has described the furnace and the solidification experiment made during the last parabolic flight, called Maracati Mission, which has occurred in December, 2010.

AbstractDiamond-like carbon (DLC) films as a hard protective coating have achieved great success in a diversity of technological applications. However, adhesion of DLC films to substrates can restrict their applications. The influence of a silicon interlayer in order to improve DLC adhesion on glass substrates was investigated. Amorphous silicon interlayer and DLC films were deposited using plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition from silane and methane, respectively. The bonding structure, transmittance, refraction index, and adherence of the films were also evaluated regarding the thickness of the silicon interlayer. Raman scattering spectroscopy did not show any substantial difference in DLC structure due to the interlayer thickness of the silicon. Optical measurements showed a sharp decrease of transmittance in the ultra-violet region caused by the fundamental absorption of the light. In addition, the absorption edge of transmittance shifted toward longer wavelength side in the ultra-violet region as the thickness of the silicon interlayer increased. The tribological results showed an increase of DLC adherence as the silicon interlayer increased, which was characterized by less cracks around the grooves.

ABSTRACT: The second satellite of the Brazilian Complete Space Mission of the National Institute for Space Research (SCD2/MECB-INPE) was put into orbit in October 1998. It has the form of an octagonal prism with 1 m in diameter and 1.45 m in height. Solar panels occupy the eight sides of the satellite and generate 70 W of electrical power. The study of degradation of the photogenerated current of the solar cells according to the life satellite is very complex because of planetary albedo influence. During the orbit of the satellite, the panels receive the sum of direct and indirect solar energy, which is the sunlight reflected from Earth to outer space (known as planetary albedo). This indirect solar radiation is affected strongly by weather conditions and its effect is compensated by an algorithm that considers the data of solar cells experiment that is onboard of the SCD2 satellite. Therefore, in this way the variation of photogenerated current becomes a linear curve well behaved as a function of time of the satellite orbit. The paper presents the mathematical algorithm for compensating the planetary albedo and the results of the variation of the photogenerated current of the solar panels in different situations, such as different times of year, temperature and illumination slope.
