AbstractEste trabajo tiene como objetivo estimar Ia capacidad deI modelo regional LAHM/GFDL versión CIMA para simular 10 ciclogénesis costeras sobre Sudamérica. A través de Ia composición de los casos se evalúa el impacto sobre los resultados a cambios en algunos factores tales como Ia resolución vertical y horizontal, el anidado deI modelo en sí mismo, Ia sensibilidad a Ias condiciones iniciales, el efecto a cambios en Ia difusión vertical y en el tratamiento de Ia convección. El modelo lográ reproducir todas Ias situaciones seleccionadas con una antelación de 36 horas, aunque con distinto grado de exactitud, mostrando una tendencia a subestimar Ia intensidad de los sistemas y a acortar su ciclo de vida. De Ia comparación de los distintos experimentos surge que el LAHM sería más sensible a cambios en Ias condiciones iniciales que a los restantes factores estudiados. Sin embargo los resultados obtenidos bajo diferentes tratamientos físicos y numéricos permiten generar recomendaciones tendientes a mejorar Ia calidad de Ias simulaciones, con el ulterior fin de posibilitar su funcionamiento en forma operativa The purpose of this research is to evaluate the LAHM/GFDL (CIMA version) regional model capability to simulate 10 cases of coas tal cyclogenesis over South America. Through composite analyses the role of several physical and numerical alternatives, such as horizontal and vertical resolution, nesting, initial conditions, changes in vertical diffusion and convective parameterization, have been studied. The model represented alI the selected situations 36 hours in advance reasonably welI, each with a different degree of accuracy: a certain tendency to underestimate the system's intensity and to shorten its life cycle has been detected. Comparisons between the experiences alIow one to conclude that this model is more sensitive to initial condition changes than to other physical and numerical factors. Nevertheless, model behavior under the different alternatives tested enable us to suggest a set of recommendations for an improvement of model performance focused on further operational use.
