AbstractLightning frequency was studied for 9 states in northeast Brazil (NEB), from 1998 to 2008. TRMM satellite data were used to identify thunderstorm days and CPC/NOAA website for data on El Niño/La Niña events. All thunderstorm days were separated as El Niño, La Niña and neutral events. Annual, semi-annual and seasonal analyses of ENSO events with PDO cold phase presence were performed too. The 2381 thunderstorm cases were recorded in NEB, with an annual average 217 events. Thunderstorms were more frequently during period November - April. A lower occurrence was during May - October period. The lowest average was in August, only 6 cases per month. Thunderstorms were more frequently on March (315 cases for all study period) and were an average 29 cases per month. Differences between thunderstorms frequencies in La Niña, El Niño and normal years were more significantly during summer and autumn and less in winter. These differences were more in Bahia, Maranhão and Piauí States. A few thunderstorms events was recorded in Alagoas and Sergipe States and did not registered a significant difference between normal years and negative/positiv SSTA years.
