rainfall anomalies
AbstractNorthem and central Amazonia show tendencies for negative rainfall anomalies during the summer season on the mature phase of the strong El Nino events, such as 1982/83, 1986/87, and the current 1997/98. However, there is also a tendency for positive rainfall anomalies during some El Nino years, such as 1972/73. Broadly inverse variations of rainfall are evident in Northem and Southem Amazonia. It has been observed that some stations in Amazonia show abundant rainfall on the year before the peak of El Nino, while others show large negative departures on the beginning of summer while large positive rainfall anomalies during the fall season, of the El Nino year. In addition, strong El Nino events have also been linked to events of smoke clouds, consequence of the biomass buming during an anomalously long dry season, affecting the population of the main cities in Amazonia.
