AbstractIn Brazil, the industry of agricultural machines and implements represent significant growth potential, associated with the expansion of the Brazilian agro-industrial sector, focusing on the increase of product exportation as an alternative to reach better distributed merchandize value throughout the year, thus aiming at overcoming the problems of internal seasonality. It is therefore necessary for the industry to develop products of lesser cost in order to meet the demands of the Brazilian market, characterized mainly by family-run agriculture with limited financial means, and also products with adequate quality levels, in order to meet the needs of major producers and the internal market, which is characterized by a constant search for technological solutions and sophisticated products. This condition demands that the Brazilian companies improve the quality of their product projects as well as their manufacturing, hence adapting to international performance and to the trend for homologation and certification of new products. Even with this sectors growth potential, their products development process continues to present problems that interfere in the process management. Such problems must be acknowledged by the company in order to avoid prolongation and eventually a barrier in the companies competitiveness. According to Clark and Wheelwright (1992), in order to understand what occasions the disparity between product planning and the observed reality, it is necessary to explore the most frequent procedure where such problems manifest, and from that point take the necessary preventive and corrective course of action. By means of a descriptive exploratory study, the purpose of the present work is to identify the main difficulties encountered by large-sized Brazilian companies, located in the State of São Paulo, which manufacture agricultural machines and implements. To reach the works objective, all companies manufacturing agricultural machines that fit into this profile were identified. There was a total of five companies that were visited in order to interview the person-in-charge for Product Development and thus identify the main difficulties these companies face during development of their product. In spite of the fact that these companies presented similar profiles, the complications observed are quite heterogeneous and were grouped in at least three categories: financial difficulties, personnel problems and technical drawbacks, as for example product project and validation, seeing that each one of these problems influences negatively some distinct aspect of their product development process.
