AbstractBrazil is a very large country that extends southbound from the equatorial to the subtropical zone (more precisely from latitude 6°N to 33°S). Thus, it is expected that different meteorological systems act in different regions of the country affecting the cloud-to-ground (CG) lighting activity throughout the year. Based on 13 years of LIS measurements (1998-2010) at a 0.1º resolution, it was assessed the monthly variation of the lightning activity over the five macro-regions of Brazil (North, Northeast, Midwest, Southeast and South). This CG flash rate densities (FRD) are then associated to the frequency of occurrence of meteorological systems and to the monthly variations of precipitation in order to verify possible correlations between lightning and rainfall and their association to meteorological systems. The concept of rain yield per flash was used to assess the convection regimes. It was found that precipitation and lightning activity at these regions were well correlated to the known meteorological systems of each region. Moreover, the rain yield per flash monthly variation and overall mean were able to capture the physical nature of these systems, such as deeper convection (like MCS) or more stratiform precipitation (like the SACZ).
