AbstractThis work evaluates and characterizes some physical properties of Mesoscale Convective System (MCS) associate the cloud-to-ground (CG) lightning occurrence and proper an electrical activity nowcasting method. Satellite data from the GOES-10 infrared channel and CG lightning information from the BrasilDat were utilized for the period from 2007 to 2009 over an area centered in the São Paulo state. The brightness temperature was assimilated by ForTracCC model whose determined the MCS physical properties and later were coupled with CG lightning information. MCS 16,520 was tracking and identified through this method and it was associated with 951,359 CG lightning occurrences. The multivariate analyses and dispersion relation showed that MCS size, minimum temperature and normalized expansion rate (with Pearsons correlation of the 0.97, 0.78 and 0.31, respectively for a significance level of 0.01) are proprieties most strongly correlated with CG lightning occurrence. These results suggest that stronger max flux combined with lowers temperature during system maturation period are important factors for clouds electrification. Therefore was obtained a multiple regression parameterization that combined these three variables. The validation statistics showed high detection probability above 95 % and false alarm rate below 43 % in order to diagnostic and nowcasting until 120 minutes. In other hand, the nowcasting tends sub-estimate the CG lighting occurrence within of reasonable range.
