KeywordsEllipsoidal shells
cylindrical vessels
AbstractEllipsoidal shells are frequently used as closure heads of cylindrical vessels in order to comply with special system architecture requirements (l, 2), In weight limited situations such as in space applications it is important to know beforehand the penalties imposed when other than the ideal shell spherical geometry is employed. The purpose of this note is to show a study in which the mass of a variable thickness ellipsoidal vessel is calculated and compared with a spherical vessel (hat encloses the same internal volume at a maximum design pressure p max. The mass of the ellipsoidal shell is computed by numerical integration for a range of the ratio between the ellipsoidal semi-axes. The results are presented in terms of shell material volume (i.e., mass/material density) in a normalized form.
