AbstractEnvironmental degradation is increasing as a result of urban and rural land use planning. Among the problems derived from lack of land use planning we can mention the deforestation of conservation areas, riparian forest soil impoverishment, increased soil erosion, river silting, flooding, decreased biodiversity, terrestrial and aquatic system unbalance. The human impact on the environment is dynamic making it necessary efficient monitoring technologies among which remote sensing outstands. In this paper we present a study carried out to assess land use and land cover dynamic in the Barra Bonita reservoir hydrographic catchment basin. This basin cover an area of approximately 19.164,43 km2 located in São Paulo State at the coordinates of S 21 54? 20?? ; S 23 57? 26?? and W 46 39? 27?? ;W 48 34? 52?? . TM and ETM Landsat images from 1990 and 2002 respectively were used to carry out a supervised classification on the Spring 3.6 image processing tools. The Bhattacharya Distance region classifier with a 90 % acceptance level was used to generate land use and land cover maps for 1990 and 2002. The maps were used to compute the area occupied by each of the 11 classes so as to assess land use changes during the period under study. The IBGE SIDRA data base was then used to gather information on the area of both temporary and permanent crops (in ha) for each municipality for 1990 and 2002. This data was useful to confirm the trends derived from the land use maps. The maps allowed also to identify areas near the Barra Bonita reservoir which are submitted to inadequate land use and acting as a non point source of pollution to the rivers feeding into it. Those places were georeferenced on the ground, photographed and located in the 2002 image mosaic to complement the discussion of the results. The results showed a highly impacted basin, where conservation planning actions are urgent so as to mitigate the present environmental degradation.
