Abstract | Informações sobre o estado e extensão da cobertura vegetal do planeta podem ser fornecidas através de produtos de sensoriamento remoto. Imagens SAR (Synthetic Aperture Radar - radar de abertura sintética), por não serem suscetíveis a condições atmosféricas, resolvem o problema da cobertura de nuvens em imagens adquiridas remotamente e têm sido utilizados de maneira crescente no estudo de florestas. Este artigo apresenta uma introdução aos fundamentos do sensoriamento remoto por radar, seguidos por uma revisão de artigos que tratam das aplicações de imagens SAR no mapeamento de tipos florestais, assim como nos inventários e estimativas de biomassa florestal. Os sistemas SAR orbitais passados, atuais e planejados são apresentados, juntamente com uma tentativa de estabelecer as possibilidades futuras no estudo de florestas por radar. ABSTRACT - Remote sensing products provide Information about the status and coverage of Earth's land surface vegetation c. SAR (Synthetic Aperture Radar) systems are active sensors that provide cloud-free images suited for forest studies. This article presents an introduction to radar fundamentals, followed by a non exhaustive review of articles covering forest mapping, inventory and biomass estimation with SAR images. To conclude, past, recent and planned orbital SAR systems are presented as a guide to the future directions of forest studies with radar data. |
