Abstract | Os efeitos da liberação de calor latente de condensação no desenvolvimento dos distúrbios em latitudes medias são discutidas aqui, usando-se inicialmente o modelo quase-geostrófico de duas camadas. Através do método clássico dos auto-valores analisamos as principais características da instabilidade, a estrutura vertical e as transformações energéticas dos distúrbios instáveis. Os resultados encontrados, mostraram a existência de uma outra classe de distúrbios, denominada distúrbios de escala media. Como esses distúrbios possuem comprimentos de onda pequenos a validade da aproximação quase-geostrófica torna-se duvidosa. Assim utilizamos posteriormente um modelo não geostrófico, o de balanço. A analise da instabilidade, estrutura vertical e das transformações energéticas revelaram que a liberação de calor latente de condensação e fundamental para a formação dos distúrbios de escala media. Também foi observado, que esses distúrbios tem comprimento característico de 1000 Km e estão confinados nos baixos níveis. ABSTRACT: Effects of latent heat of condensation on middle latitude disturbances are discussed using initially a two-layer quasi-geostrophic model. The instability characteristics, vertical structure and energy transformations of unstable disturbances are analysed using the classical method of eigen-values. Results showed the existence of medium scale disturbances, in addition to the conventional baroclinic disturbances. Since these medium-scale disturbances possess small wavelengths, the validity of the quasi-geostrophic approximation becomes questionable. Therefore, a non-geostrophic model, i.e, the balance model is also used. Analysis of instability, vertical structures and energy transformations revealed that the release of latent heat of condensation is fundamental for the formation of medium scale disturbances. Also, these disturbances have a characteristic wavelength. of approximately 1000 Km and are confined to the low levels. |
