AbstractMinimizing the losses caused by front-contat metalization in a solar cells is one of the main contributions for its optimization. There is a trade-off between shadowing loss and electrical power loss. With the increasing of the metallized area, the resistive power loss in the front-contact layer decreases, and the collecting surface and the photogenerated current will also decrease. On the order hand, grid patterns of smaller shadowing area tend to have higher contact resistance losses. There is an optimum point at which the maximum output power is reached. The grid pattern shape has to be designed to achieve this point. The aim of this paper is to describe a simple method to compare patterns. It allows one to evaluate quickly which grid pattern is the most effective for the task of minimizing the power losses. Several patterns are investigated either by analytical or by numerical calculations.
