Abstract | This paper focuses on the CPU time investigation when solving an integrated structural/control optimization problem of a large space structure (LSS) subjected to the gravity-gradient torque. The solution of this integrated optimization problem requires sensitivity analysis implying computing the derivatives of the constraints imposed on the optimization problem with respect to the design variables. These derivatives can be obtained by the finite difference approach. However, this procedure may result in a significant consumption of computer time. Depending on the problem complexity the computational cost may become prohibitive. This fact motivates studies to develop semi-analytical formulations so that these derivatives are obtained analytically. However, how much would be the CPU time consumption associated with the accuracy of mathematical models for the optimization problem referred above? This paper tries to clarify this point by solving the integrated structural/control problem for models starting from models derived from a few to several finite elements (FEM). The results show that the CPU time increases exponentially with the numbers of FEM and really becomes prohibitive, at least for the PC CPU Pentium II, 750 MHz, 120 Mbyte memory used to solve the integrated structural/control optimization problem under study in this paper.
