AbstractA fast (8 keV) neutral lithium beam probe was developed for the measurement of edge density profile in the heliotron/torsatron CHS. It was designed to attain good penetration and to be compatible with good spatial (approximately 0.01 m) and temporal (approximately 3 ms) resolution. Two complementary methods of density determination from the beam emission signal were used. For the low density region with [n(e)l] < 4 x 10(17) m-2, where the beam attenuation was negligible, a method based on calibration of beam intensity and optical system using collisional excitation in a neutral gas was used. For the higher density region with [n(e)l] < 2 X 10(18) m-2, where the beam was totally attenuated, a density reconstruction method, based on the whole emission profile, was applied. In plasmas with typical density e-folding lengths of several centimeters, measurements of density profile from scrape off (n(e) < 10(18) m-3) to a higher density boundary region (n(e) < 4 X 10(19) m-3) were performed. This diagnostic was applied in ECH, NBI and NBI + ICH plasmas produced in CHS.
