AbstractA synthesis method is used in the design of the electron gun for a 35GHz gyrotron to be built at the Institute for Space Research (INPE). The synthesized equipotentials are obtained by integrating a sytstem of equations, whose boundary conditions are defined by the analytically extended self-consistent equations describing the laminar flow. For laminar beams, with no-intersecting electron paths, spacecharge effects cancel out and, when compared to beams with intersecting trajectories, the velocity spread is greatly reduced. A systematic procedure for the design of axisymmetric electro-optical systems is presented, which allows the derivation of the synthesis parameters from the required characteristics of the electron gun. In the present paper, the synthesized gun is able to deliver a 215kW electron beam with a calculated velocity spread of ~1%.
